Anyone think Abby Elliot’s “Brittany Murphy” was just a drunk version of her “Angelina Jolie”? My god, she even used the same wig. Brittany Murphy’s hair has never looked like that.
Note to Lorne Michaels: Rehire Michaela Watkins and fire Abby Elliot. She’s the weakest link on the show.
jenny slate is the weakest link. at least elliot is hot… and kinda funny
Have to agree on Slate, not impressing so far, but I think they should rehire Casey.
She didn’t look much like Murphy, but she had the tone down pat. If you closed your eyes, and pretended that Brittany Murphy was relevant, then yeah, you’d totally believe the impression.
It was Muppets, not Sesame Street.
Completely agree, but at least the SNL cast are old enought to know the Muppets. Blake probably never even saw the The Muppet Movie or the TV show for the matter. Plus, Beeker’s hair was all wrong, looked like a halo.
There is always next week. You know there will be Twilight skits galore and maybe Bon Jovi will be part of a skit or two as well.
Maybe the “Jon Bovi” band from Weekend Update will do something?
I have to say that I enjoyed the episode for the most part. I haven’t watched SNL in years, but I happened to be home, and I’m familiar with Blake from Gossip Girl. I was actually quite impressed with her versatility and physicality in her sketches. I didn’t care for the ESPN Sportscasters, the Underground Punk commercial, or the Swine Fever ad. I agree Rihanna’s short was one of the highlights, along with the Tiger Woods sketch (I also agree that domestic abuse is not funny, but if you are offended easily, SNL/MAD TV aren’t really the best shows for you to watch). LOVED Ms. Hastings, Gossip Girl: Staten Island, and the last sketch. All in all, I’m glad I watched. I’ll tune in next week to see if Taylor Lautner can be more than a pretty face/torso.
Didn’t they already do that Swine Fever ad?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Yes, they did. I can’t remember which episode, but I remember the commercial.
I think I would have enjoyed it far more if Blake had made her booty gone round with her butt facing the camera.
Who played Janice with the Muppets skit? I could not see who it was. they should have let that character speak…the muppet alone is hilarious…like that crazy druggie from Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke…LOL.
I think it was Jenny Slate. She has really been given the shaft after she dropped the f-bomb on her first week. If I’m not mistaken this was her only appearance this week and you could only see half her face. Nasim meanwhile has gotten plenty of screen time which I don’t mind since she actually seems talented. Abby Elliot on the other hand…
I agree with this review, for the most part. I do think that the Rihanna digital short was the highlight of the night, but I also think she did a really good job with her two musical performances.
Also, the Brittany Murphy thing was really funny…and Blake Lively wasn’t that bad, I think she did the best she could with the material that was written for her.
Enough with the young singer/actor non-comedians as hosts. I know they are trying to attract a younger audience, but it’s at the expense of a funny show. This cast overall is one of the weaker casts and they need all the comedic help they can get. Ryan Reynolds is at least a decent comedy actors. How about Owen Wilson, Jack Black or Seth Rogan?
Or Michael C. Hall !!!!
they have rogen a lot. Also remember that the host has to be WILLING! sometimes they just take what they can get. And you need versatilty. I love Jack Black but he can only do one thing: manic rock dude stoner
Seth Rogan doesn’t exist, but Seth Rogen does. I do agree with you though. They need better hosts. I’m a 16 year old girl myself and I hate all these young hot hosts that never proved they were funny before. We all know Jack Black, Joel McHale, and Seth Rogen are hilarious people so why not have them on the show? Also, the writing needs to be kicked up a notch. It’s terrible.
I sometimes wonder how much better SNL would be if they didn’t have to cater to a host every week, they just did the sketches they thought were genuinely funny. I feel like there would be a lot more sketches like that last one. Also they really need to lose the cold open political sketches-they are NEVER funny!!!
You think they are never funny, and I think they are always funny. Funny how that works, isn’t it?
Blake Lively wasn’t the reason the show was bad. So that is a good thing. And doing skits on the party crashers and Tiger Woods is the reason you watch. I still go back to the writing. When you have to do jokes on sexuality and Vagasil then you are not trying. Think of all the funniest moments of SNL. The funny stuff are smartly written. Those writers like Tina Fey are gone now. The show will return when there are better writing. If the cast is writing, the show will continue to suffer.
The most hilarious line ever said by Janice the Muppet in those Muppet movies…”Look buddy…I don’t take my clothes off for anyone…I don’t care if it IS artistic!”
“So Im like look mom its my life so if i wanna live on a beach and walk around naked… oh” -Janice in the Muppet Caper
it was a muppet monologue, not a sesame street monologue. those were not sesame street muppets, they were muppet-muppets.
Bottom line, Weekend update was consistently funny and the high point, I thought Aretha swallowed by a bear was better than Obama Ecstasy, I hated the interminable Underground festival ad, and Blake Lively…from the looks of it, she got some great glamor shots out of the deal, and well she wasn’t January Jones.
Are you freaking serious? The weekend update was laaaaaame! As always. SNL’s just lame.
Yeah, Seth just doesn’t have the strong enough wit to pull it off every week. And I agree the Charlie Brown was not humorous in anyway and shows Seth’s laziness into the path of cruelty and least resistance.
Totally agree with you about Aretha! Had to pause the show because I was laughing so hard!
That seth meyer joke about Aretha and a bear was a riff off a Kimmel monologue earlier in the week.
Credit has to be given where it is due.
I’d go iwht lame, not lively. And Ken, a new channel is NOT SUPPOSED to be entertainment. If you want to rip on CNN or Fox News for the general absence of solid, onjective reporting free from political and personal opinion spin, then you can stand in line. But do NOT rip news shows (or channels) for not being ‘entertaining’. It’s not; the real news is nealry invariably unpleasant, grim, and truthful – things most people ostrich over to our detriment and theirs.
Don’t type so angrily. You get more typos that way. Just breathe, and proofread. Thanks.
Could you guys get over the January Jones episode already.
