'Dollhouse' recap: Burning off the best stuff?

The guttering flame that is Dollhouse — two new episodes being burned off over three weeks including last night — remains capable of throwing off a few sparks. Sparkiest of all was Summer Glau, glau-ering grimly at Echo/Caroline while portraying Bennett Halverson. Bennett is sort of the female version of Topher, except less manic, promoted a pay-grade, and with a left arm that hangs limply in a sling. She works for the Rossum Corporation’s Washington, D.C. Dollhouse, under the direction of Ray Wise’s Stewart Lipman.

Characters paired off amusingly and effectively. Buffy alums Eliza Dushku and Alexis Denisof as Senator Daniel Perrin were ostensible enemies (Perrin has been campaigning to close down the Dollhouse). Perrin was using the freshly-freed active Madeline (Miracle Laurie) to give testimony about the Dollhouse’s pernicious policies; Echo was dispatched to stop him. But they were brought to a common cause last night when both of their minds were being controlled. In a particularly Whedonesque turn of phrase (the hour’s writing was credited to Andrew Chambliss), Echo said of Bennett and the actives the latter controlled, “I think her bad guys are badder than my bad guys.”

More pairings: Wise’s Lipman tried to exert superiority over Olivia Williams’ Adelle DeWitt, but their delightfully clever, cruuush-worthy exchanges, as they tussled over control of Echo and Perrin, rendered them artful equals.

And in what I will assert was the single best edition of Dollhouse ever, during last night’s second hour, called “The Left Hand,” Bennett and Topher matched wits while pretending to flirt. (The evening’s immortal line, Topher describing Bennett: “Imagine John Cassavetes in The Fury as a hot chick.”)

Really, at this point, the cancelled but ever-more-vibrant Dollhouse has become a critique of itself and its critics. When Perrin described the Dollhouse enterprise as a den of “human trafficking” and a form of “prostitution,” well, hmmm, those are criticisms similar to the ones some of us leveled at this series when it premiered.

Dollhouse and Whedon deserved some of that skepticism. Between a contentious relationship with the Fox network over what direction the show should take and the Dollhouse writing staff’s uneven, working-it-out-as-it-went-along feminist aesthetic concerning the themes of control, desire, power, and freedom, there was much messiness and confusion. Even the show’s most ardent supporters agree that there are some incarnations of Echo (rock-chick back-up singer; blind woman) that they wish had never materialized. And it didn’t help that Dushku was rarely able or given the opportunity to define her role the way previous Whedon heroes played by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Nathan Fillion were able to.

But last night’s back-to-back mash-up adventure was the very best sort of (in the phrase of one character) “lurid pulp fantasy.” This was what Dollhouse was meant to be: a rock ‘em, sock ‘em brain-twister with a social agenda.

Couple more random but important things:

• All hail Enver Gjokaj as Victor-mind-wiped-into-Topher: that impersonation was utterly spot-on.

• If you’re any kind of Whedon fan, you’ll want to read Chicago Tribune TV critic Maureen Ryan’s extensive, fascinating new interview with Joss.

Enver as topher was the best thing in two seasons of dollhouse yet, truly great performance

    • Middento

I so agree! It was a delicious performance — he seriously has some of the best acting opportunities of anyone on the show.

    • Gregoire

I hope this guy gets more work after this show. He’s really a find.

      • PMD

I really hope that Joss Whedon starts another show immediately with Enver starring!!! I don’t want to wait years for a new Whedon series.

      • PMD

        Or for Enver!!!

      • Brooke

Agreed, 100% Joss really knows how to find ‘em.

    • BJohnson

Oh man, Enver was sooo perfect. It goes without saying how the supporting cast really puts on the A game when they finally get the spotlight. Sad to see this show go…is there really no hope? Come on FX or hell even Chiller.

    • Sharon

I must admit, the Victor as Topher was brilliantly done. Dang, the terminator’s not coming back either??? All the shows I enjoy seem to become extinct way too early.

    • darclyte

It was Emmy worthy. He NAILED Topher down pat. It was amazing.

      • Brian C.

        Let’s not get carried away…

  • Marlowe32

Sorry to see this show go the way of Firefly and Sarah Connor Chronicles (I love Summer Glau, but I sense a pattern)…but Victor as Topher was fickin’ brilliant and the best I’ve seen on Dollhouse.

  • Grailwolf

I agree with much in this review, but two things bothered me. First, Topher and Bennett were not “pretending to flirt” they were totally smitten with on another. They just had their own agendas as well. It’s a minor point, but I think the scene had more depth than is described here.

More important, I have never understood how it is a “criticism of the series” to say that it is about prostitution and human trafficking. I think many people miss the point that this is a series that centers on the bad guys. The activities of the Dollhouse are not glorified or excused, and they are not even going to be the ones who win in the end. Criticizing the series for this is like complaining that Nascar has too many left turns or that CSI has too many dead bodies. It’s the underlying basis of the story and without it the show would be about something else.
We have managed to watch shows about mobsters (The Sopranos), drug dealers (Weeds and Breaking Bad), dirty cops (The Shield), and violently criminal biker gangs (Sons of Anarchy) without saying “but they’re doing bad things!!” so why is this different?
Oh, and one of the characters in the show pointing out that the bad guys are bad guys is not commentary on the show itself. I’m sure the Perrin storyline was planned well before people started complaining that the Dollhouse were doing bad things.

“We have managed to watch shows about mobsters (The Sopranos), drug dealers (Weeds and Breaking Bad), dirty cops (The Shield), and violently criminal biker gangs (Sons of Anarchy) without saying “but they’re doing bad things!!” so why is this different?”

Because the writing isn’t close to the quality of the afore-mentioned shows, so when you’re left without anyone to root for, you’re left with nothing but the pretty good cast to admire.

To be honest the show’s premise is badly-executed, the show’s ‘heroine’ starts off as an arrogant eco-terrorist, the show starts slowly and is sleazy in its extreme.

      Other than that, it’s great.

      • thin

You completely miss the point. That the show is about something distasteful is not a problem in and of itself, clearly, when the shows in the list he made have been more critically acclaimed and/or successful.

Dollhouse finally approaches greatness as it heads toward oblivion. Last nite’s episodes were the best we have seen. Enver as Topher was frickin’ hilarious. Glau as the pretty, shy, brilliant, quirky and slight crazy Bennett was wonderful AND with glasses! Amazing when the focus is solely on Eliza the show feels clunky but once she’s truly part of an ensemble, she shines bright. The last 10 minutes of the second ep did feel like a cop-out though.

    • Tarc

Dollhouse is great (*great*) sci-fi. Like most sci-fi, it’s been imprefectly rendered, but it’s still very interesting, thought-provoking stuff. It’s way above the heads of any of the FOX execs, which is why they ran into trouble. Joss, dude, I have one word – HBO.

      • Jen

Joss I have a few words (gee hope he reads this) 1) HBO DUDE!!!!!! 2) Summer Glau 3)Enver Gjokaj 4)Fray as a TV Show!!!!! PLEASE xx

  • Annie

Enver Gjokaj is probably the most consistently great thing about Dollhouse. Even in uneven episodes, he’s just spot on.
Hopefully he has a successful career after the show.

  • KEVIN

It was phenominal! I wish every episode of dollhouse had been shown in the 2 hour format! It was exhilarating! Is there any chance this show gets picked up by another network?

  • Marty

    Enver Gjokaj! Enough said!

    • robby d

Enver deserves an Emmy. Props to Joss for bringing him into the Whedonverse. <3 I wish he had a twitter!

  • davidsask

Great shows and spot on review. Is sad the show has finally found somewhat of a groove and not long before gone forever. It really was sad right from the beginning Joss decided to do business with Fox again. Eliza is also hit or miss in scenes and in general. The rest of the cast great!

  • mike

Although in the long run it may not have survived, I’m sorry that Fox hired Whedon to do one of ‘his’ shows and then found it necessary to tinker with it at the beginning. Joss fans tuning in to find his trademark work instead found some a very mundane (if full of potential) show. It was only later when Joss had looser reins that the show turned into something really exciting and good. By then, the damage was done.

    • Tarc

      Precisely. Well said.

      • robby d

        I completely agree!

  • Horatio

The ONLY problem with last night’s airings was Dushku. Everything (and everyone) was excellent. Enver Gjokaj again proves he (and Dichen Lachman as Sierra) should have been the principal dolls. Dushku ruined this program.

    • Horatio

What I meant to write was Eliza Dushku ruined the series.

      • Doubting Thomas

Nope, Joss WHedon’s poorly thought-out concept and crappy writing killed this show stone dead before it began.

      • Shiny Tim

        What do trolls eat?

      • Doubting Thomas

Lol. That’s a classic Whedon fan response for anyone who doesn’t pucker up and kiss the royal ass.

      • RA

Were you trying to reply to me? If, so are an even worse troll than I originally thought. Learn to message board man.

      • Jackie

Joss is Royalty?! I had always suspected it but is it now confirmed because Randy up there referred to him as a Lord. There is a big difference between being a Lord and being Royal.

      • Shiny Tim

Oops. I meant for that to be a reply to this. So…What do trolls eat?

      • JMB

they feed on the waves of righteous indignation so easily harvested from people who take life too seriously. And they wash it down with the tears of Romanian orphans.

      • Anonymous

It is actually a better concept then a lot of the copycat shows and TV and the writing is fabulous… what killed the show was being on Friday

    • BJohnson

I get the complaints about Eliza but she does deliver the Whedon’s lines. It was something like “Lady you don’t know everyone you just woke up but they all think you’re a bitch.” Laughed out loud for that.

  • PMD

The last three episodes have been just so good – and I can’t believe they made us go through the other ehh epis to get to these ones!!! When the series started I was most excited to be watching Whedon shows again. However I was immediately disappointed – I have never been a fan of Eliza Dukshu. But I never stopped watching the show. And I am so glad that I haven’t because it payed off towards the end. Also it introduced me to probably one of the finest actors on television – Enver Gjoka. He is absolutely amazing!!!

I have to be honest, when all of Whedon’s previous shows ended -included Dr. Horrible- I was left with an empty feeling. This time I am glad that this show is being put out of its misery. Yes it had great potential and it is far better than most shows out there. But from the Friday night time slot, to Eliza Dukshu’s lackluster acting skills, to the stupid episodes of the rock star and being a mother (although after last night I do understand the significance a little more – but the point could have been brought home by one of those crappy epis, not a whole slew of them), I am really okay with Dollhouse ending.

    • KC

Oh and the terrible writing, sleazy premise, and ill-thought concept.

      Who’s responsibility were they?

      The geek’s favourite – Whedon.

Put the blame where it belongs, on the show’s creator.

      Unlikable lead character – eco-terrorist.

Unlikable show – show about the powerless being whored out to the rich and powerful. Making it almost impossible to sell.

Stupid concept – how can a admittedly borderline moronic FBI agent find this business that everyone seems to know about? He’s a trained investigator! Why wouldn’t you buy a hooker at a 100th of the price rather than an Active? How can a college professor afford a million dollar active? Why wouldn’t a man’s in-laws or friends ask questions when a new woman turns up and starts pretending to be a child’s mother? After all the glitches and repeated recommendations by Domminic’s character, why hasn’t Echo been ‘atticed’. Why go through the complicated process of setting Sierra’s handler to be killed by Novemember? Why not have another security team member do the job, much simpler.

Oh wait, and miss out on an ‘I am woman hear me roar’ moment? No matter the sense.

The end of Belonging where Victor and Sierra get into a pod together makes no sense. Oh yes, I get it’s meant to be touching etc, but anyone seeing that would send the pair to the attic immediately. Once more, the moment over decent plotting.

The Whedonites who’ve frequently sniffed at those who’ve chosen not to watch the show as ‘stupid etc’, however, maybe they’re the ones who aren’t the most blessed for trying to promote this show as well-written.

And there’s more. But really, stop making excuses for your idol and put the blame where it belongs. On Mutant Enemy’s writers.

      • anonymous

Did Whedon put your sister in the dollhouse? You have a lot of rant for one person.

  • Kevin

This is what they should have been giving us all along…this is what we expected to see and what would have kept the viewers…too bad its a little too late…but i will watch the rest of the show after those amazing episode…Summer Glau!!!!!

    • Doubting Thomas

Sucked utterly and played the same drab unconvincing act she always does.

      • RA

Seriously, man. You aren’t a very good troll. Try again when you get some skills.

  • Steve

Did anyone else think that Victor-as-Topher had his voice dubbed by Fran Kranz? If not, that really was an amazing impression by Gjokaj (even if so, still a very good performance in terms of mannerisms and expressions).

    • Lee Katherine

After all the incredible character imitations — nay, embodiments — that we have seen Enver do, I think it’s safe to say that that is pure, God-given talent.

  • Chappel

Who knew that Satan would end up as middle management at a Dollhouse after his gig at Reaper was done? Enver Gjokaj was brilliant as Topher. He continues to lead the pack of those giving, unheeded, weekly acting lessons to Eliza Dushku. I kind of feel bad for her. She’s obviously trying so hard and yet it’s the obviousness that is her downfall. Summer Glau was certainly…. interesting as the unhinged mad scientist (yes, I know that’s redundant but unhinged is on my word of the day calender and I need to use it). I wonder if we’ll get Caroline’s side of the story re: the snarky comments she made as she left her friend’s arm to die under a huge piece of styrofoam. At least Dollhouse seems to be going out like a lion instead of the lamb it was in the beginning.

    • Doubting Thomas

Glau showed her usual camera terror, but hey she’s from Fireflop!

      • RJ

Dude, stop trolling… it’s really pathetic.

      • Anonymous

Firefly was the best series on TV ever… if you hate Joss Whedon so much then stay off of the recaps of his show

  • Gusar

Fully agree on both Summer Glau being the sparkiest and on Victor-as-Topher being spot-on. Enver Gjokaj is without doubt the greatest thing that came out of Dollhouse. I hope there’s a bright acting future for him ahead – he totally deserves it.
