While I love them both, Charlie Brown’s Christmas would have to be my favorite. I love everything about it; the soundtrack, the wild dancing, the hapless Christmas tree and most of all, the simple recitation of the birth of Jesus in the voice of a child. It brings tears to my eyes and peace to my heart amidst the crazy commercialism that Christmas has become and reminds me, once again, of what it’s really all about.
Rudolph anyone?
Charlie Brown is trying to find the true meaning of Christmas (which he eventually does) in A Charlie Brown Christmas. That doesn’t make him a sap. And Guaraldi’s score is classic music in two genres–Holiday and Jazz. I love How the Grinch Stole Christmas too. But Charlie Brown wins. Game over.
I like charile brown better shortpeopledate.com
Obama is the real Grinch… we can’t watch charlie brown tonight because of that mean one….
I refuse to choose, they are both excellent. Consider the time when Charlie Brown Christmas was first released; a show meant for children that openly recognizes Christmas can be melancholy? A commercially-produced and sponsored cartoon that questions commercialism? And lays out the religious meanings of Christmas with no hedging or backpedaling? Wow. It’s still relevant today. And Ken is absolutely the first person I’ve ever met who didn’t like the music.
The grinch, of course, is excellent too, also reminding us that “Christmas doesn’t come from a store”. Love it. And as far as music, “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch” is fabulous.
You are asking us to compare apples and oranges. Both of this are holiday treats, but presented quite differently. It is never a question of either/or.
I like a “Charlie Brown Christmas”, but I love the “Grinch Stole Christmas”, especially when he returns and take the 2 pieces of cheese from the mouse, LOL classic.
This is Exhibit A as to Ken Tucker being the Armond White of T.V. critics, his (inexplicable) regular slot on the otherwise excellent NPR show Fresh Air notwithstanding.
