So tonight is the third episode of V, and the ratings for last week’s episode dropped quite a bit from the series premiere.
I like the show, and I’d like to see it exist beyond its initial run of four episodes. So in the spirit of constructive criticism, I offer this advice to the producers:
Drop the subplot with Tyler and Lisa. No offense to Logan Huffman, who plays the son of Elizabeth Mitchell’s Erica, or Laura Vandervoort, who plays the lissome Visitor to whom Tyler is attracted.
This is one dead-end storyline. We know that Lisa is there to entice Tyler to join the Visitors, initially without the knowledge of his anti-Visitor mom. But every time there’s a Tyler-Lisa scene, all action on V grinds to a halt. Instead of seeing what Erica or Morris Chestnut’s Ryan or Scott Wolf’s Chad are up to, we have to sit around while Tyler gazes at Lisa with a moo-cow gaze, knowing no good (or much in the way of a romantic future) can come of this.
To keep viewers, V has to zip right along these next couple of weeks. And if it returns, I hope the Tyler-Lisa storyline cools, and the writers find something else for these characters to do.
Agree? Disagree?

I don’t know. The growing “need” for Tyler to feel accepted by the V’s (and his wooing of Lisa) makes for a great dark alley story. His mom is going to be the upfront fighter for the resistence and he’s in love with the enemey. Plenty tension to keep it interesting.
even though i disagree with Mr. Ken Tucker here, i believe that he is only concerned about losing good quality TV such as V. he is just concerned about how the show can hold on to its viewers. Because if reality shows rule television. i might just go to borders and read books for the first time. I agree, last week’s V was boring. I understand your concern Mr. Tucker.. i understand
I just watched the third episode and I feel a lot of chemistry and after we realized that she’s the daughter of Anna! wow I think it will really add a lot to the plot as both children are rebelling against their parents.
I have no problems with them dropping this storyline. It’s deadly dull and I don’t know if its the actor or the writing, but both seem pretty awful whenever this plotline comes up. I loved the way they did it in the original mini-series, but this is just going nowhere.
Right!! The original was good.
Couldn’t agree more. Snooze. The storyline needs to go. And that’s even after seeing the “lissome” whatever-her-name-is in her underwear.
Ken, While I agree with you that the storyline is slow,it is necessary to allow for the inevitable alien/human baby. PRET-TAY-NAMA !!!!! (watch the original mini-series for the translation!)
Agreed – I always want to FF thru their scenes, but it’s obviously a prelude to the alien/human hybrid baby.
I really had thought, like others, that Ryan and his fiancee would have the alien-human baby. This remake seems to mix old and new — Diana had a soldier make love to a human in the original as one of her experiments on earthlings, and Anna seems to be doing this too, but using her own daughter, Lisa, who is more than willing to jump human bones…
I totally agree that this is a very predictable plotline (even to one who never watched the original), so I’m hoping that they will pull a spin in a much different way: trying to use him to breed ideal slaves/meals or just something else than the expected hybrid baby daddy or the inevitable conflict point for Erika’s character… because with no offense to the actor, the Tyler character for me is simply unlikable and I’d prefer the focus to shift to others..
Why can’t the hybrid baby be Ryan and Valerie’s? He is a V, and they are established characters so it could work. Besides Tyler is the wet blanket of this series and the only interesting aspect of Lisa is the zipper almost to the navel on her vest.
I agree that the older couple with the female human make a much more ideal choice to have the baby that is half V. Besides, it creates more tension in how he will deal with the revelation that he is a V. The teen storyline is quite painful. Acting wise, he does not hold his own arguing with his mother, so I really do not care to see him fighting with her. As far as plot goes, he is probably the most interesting if he becomes a mole for one side or the other.
I’m pretty sure human/V crossbreeding would require purposeful genetic engineering techniques. No accidental Ryan/Valerie pregnancy.
“Pretaynama?”
(Holding back tears)”It means peace.”
Ha ha ha! The Star Child, by far the WORST part of the original series.
the ending of the original series (the final battle) was horrendous…I mean come on a half human/alien child stopping the ship from exploding with her (universal?) powers!!! They ruined a great series with it
Yes they need to drop it or throw him in the conversion chamber and turn him to a V Mole to get the subplot moving. It is going nowhere and is not a good idea for a four episode showing with a waiting period of next year.
They should had a story line where the V’s eat Ken Tucker.
good one ..lol
Ha ha, I’ll agree only if the threat of being eaten by V’s gets the “House” and “Supernatural” recaps back!
i totally, 100% agree. thanks for pointing it out. those scenes seem way too forced on us, including the accompanying scenes with elizabeth mitchell nagging him about it. it ruins the vibe of the show and brings it to melodrama territory.
Completely agree. I understand that the storyline will eventually lead to something more exciting, but for now every scene related to it moves in slow motion. There’s no energy there. The actors look as bored as I feel.
Needs more naked torture scene.
I agree. That guy was extremely hot. lol
Completely agree. I am really digging the show so far, but that storyline is a bore. And what 17 year old rides a motorcycle?
Who rides a dirt bike in Manhattan?
Actually it is a super motard. It may look like a dirt bike but it is a legal street bike. As for him being seventeen there are legal ways to obtain a license at seventeen.
My wife and I were just commenting on this last night while watching the DVR’d episode #2. The show is really entertaining dumb fun….EXCEPT the tedious subplot of her son and the V chick, mainly because the son cant act his way out of a wet paper bag., Drop it immediately, the show grinds to a halt whenever they appear onscreen.
YES. I love every aspect of this show except this one. What’s strange is that I love romance in my sci-fi, but I hate this storyline.
Agreed. The Tyler has got to be the least intelligent person on the planet, I don’t care how cute the alien girl is.
I think that’s a big part of what makes this storyline feel washed out: it’s unrealistic. It’s hard to believe in a character who so willingly and immediately slaps blinders on either side of his head and marches toward the hot girl, despite all the red lights. They both feel one-dimensional in the sense that neither of them ever seem to CHOOSE or ACT. It’s more like the writers simply wrote Boy and Girl into Subplot Where Boy and Girl Eventually Hookup.
Oddly enough, the original V had a much more interesting take on this relationship. Since it was a parable about Nazi Germany, it showed how the Vs appealed to the outcasts and turned them into informers. This time around it’s just a dopey “hot girl co-opts wide-eyed kid.” Disappointing.
Interesting point – I had forgotten about this. I think you hit very close to the truth as to why this plotline is not working.
This show got boring way to quick. I’m not sure it’s going to make it, whether the teen story continues at the rate it’s going now or not. To answer the question-I think we can do without it for now.
I hope they change something cause so far V has not been what I was hoping for but neither has Flash Foward so I guess I’ll just have to wait to LOST to return for some quality tv…imo
I was just telling my friend I had high hopes for Flash Forward and V. Flash Forward has had several boring episodes in a row, and V only had one good episode before it became almost unwatchable. I’ll watch the next two episodes, but if it doesn’t improve, there’s no way I’m coming back to the show in March or April or whatever.
Completely agree. Both V and Flash Forward have been a major disappointment so far.
Relieved to hear others say this. I’m particularly sad that Flash Forward bores me because it sounds like it should be interesting. I even read brief summaries of the eps I miss, think “that sounded cool,” go back for the next episode only to be promptly bored all over again.
Fully agree-
I agree, i can barely stand the tyler character so the few scenes with him the better
Agree….It is such a copy of the original. Kid rebels against the parent and finds out in the end that Mom was right.
Actually to be a copy of the original with the kid rebels parent scenario has to end with the kid sent to slaughterhouse to be eaten by the Vees. That was the fate of the kid who joined the Visitor Youth in the original.
…and wasn’t the original kid played as more unlikeable? More of a bully/nazi youth type?
This is actually two subplots of the original joined together. The “Hitler Youth” type boy and a girl who has a crush on a Visitor. To show how bad this new series is both of the Original subplots were instrumental to the overal plot and provided some of the biggest moments. Probably the most chilling scene of the whole Original was Daniel eating at the family dinner table alone. The result of turning in his family and friends one by one for various “crimes” or offenses to his ego.
@ Bobby’s Report, Yes you are right but even I find Tyler, and his subplot, unlikeable in the new V series. It reeks of Clark and Lana from Smallville. @The Truth, The writers did indeed merged the two subplots into one (Tyler/Lisa) without advancing it, as compared to the Ryan Nichols and his fiance subplot which was to the point, is a very bad sequence in the V storyline and needs to get to the point or be removed.
And one of the ironies of Daniel, the collaborator, was that his grandfather was a rabbi who had survived the Holocaust and was a resistance fighter against the Vs.
