The Wanda Sykes Show, week two: Eight minutes of righteous jokes about passing a health care bill, then using a clip from the Steve McQueen movie The Blob, re-titled “Obama Care,” to obliterate the jokes that had preceded it. The points she made were salient. Funny? Not especially.
I liked Sykes’ Sammy Sosa jokes more than the ones George Lopez made on his new talk show earlier in the week. Commenting on the media chatter about Sosa’s skin appearing lighter, Sykes sidekick, Keith Robinson, said, “He looks like Cab Calloway now.” “He just needs a zoot suit,” added Sykes. I always like people with a sense of history.
But “WandaRama,” her version of “Weekend Update,” contained so many vagina jokes she re-named it, for this week, “VaginaRama” — the re-naming was funnier than the jokes about the body-part.
For her weekly panel discussion-with-drinking, Sykes had Tom Joyner, John Salley, and Cougar Town’s Ian Gomez talking at length about the upcoming series The Jackson: A Family Dynasty. Salley opined that Joe Jackson deserves a chunk of money from Michael’s estate. This isn’t Meet The Press or Tavis Smiley, John — there was supposed to be some humor in there.
Things got a little livelier during their discussion of medical marijuana. “I have to admit, I have rolled a joint in some tampon paper,” said Wanda. To which Joyner responded, “That’s alright, but when you start rolling your weed in the paper from the Bible, that’s wrong.”
Once again: Good for Sykes for raising subjects that other talk shows don’t grapple with as aggressively. Too bad she’s still not making the talk-show format a good showcase for her humor.
Did you watch?

I watched. Still a little awkward at parts, but overall I’d say better than premier week. I’m willing to stick around and watch this ‘work-in-progress’ improve
(after all, SNL has been around for decades and it still sucks)
Terrible, why give it time to be a ‘work in progress”? Bring back Spike Ferenstein – much funnier than this garbage. I miss Hollywood douche-bag skits, comedy for stoners, little Bill O’Reily, etc. Wanda is awful.
I love Wanda, and still I didn’t laugh too much. I know she loves Obama, but you can make fun of him too, it’s ok. She is funnier than this. Maybe cut to half hour and only do the drink table. And the inappropriate joke segment, kinda funny.
I didnt watch. I dont live here.
So you live in Mars?
I thought it was good last night. I think it’s much funnier than you do, I think, because I laughed out loud numerous times. The round table, in particular, was much funnier and more interesting this week. I also liked the opening monologue, Wandarama, and the parody commercial. The only thing I found awkward and stilted was the thing you praised…the section with Keith Robinson, which just comes across as very awkward to me, how they’re standing there, kind of leaning on a table, talking to each other, then projecting out to the audience sometimes. I feel like it’s 2 friends messing around but not letting us as in on the in-jokes. I’d ditch that segment. Love the drag queen, tho.
I recorded it and watched it after SNL. It’s still kind of clunky, but since I adore Wanda I’m gonna remain a viewer while hoping it gets better.
reminds me of dl hughley’s stint on cnn.
I usually like Wanda Sykes, but I’m waiting to watch her show until she works out all the kinks. Talk shows usually need some time to find their groove.
This is what happens when you give a show to an unfunny, unattractive, untalented biach.
BITTER MUCH?
jack c .. sorry u havent noted her previous success.. u nailed on the head gato, lol
SORRY .. didnt watch, still recovering from week 1. i love wanda sykes, her talkshow .. not so much
no she is just a racist
Come again?
her partner is white and they have white kids. yeah, she’s a racist.
He meant she’s “a racial” but he’s too “stuperd” to get it right.
We tried giving her show one more chance after last week’s disaster just because we have always liked Wanda. It just isn’t meant to be. The opening dialogue was even worse than last week. Not a chuckle to be had just a lot of cringing. Obama? Healthcare? Wanda it is not working well as your main subject matter so move away from the political agenda for once please. We gave it a couple shots, but won’t bother anymore. Its too sad to watch.
Have to agree Chuck, except for the ‘won’t bother anymore’ comment. Wanda is too good to not be CAPABLE of fixing this show. Whether she is willing to put in the effort to win what is now obviously an uphill battle is what is questionable at this point. I’ll give her about a month off and then (if she’s still around) try again.
I can’t stand this woman, even if she’s on briefly as a guest on some other show. She’s not funny – she’s grating – she’s obnoxious. And don’t call me racist!
I love Wanda on the New Christine and I think she needs to stay on it. I watch her show last night for the first one and I was dissappointed. I was looking for a show that was funny but sadly this one was not. Im still rooting for her and I will watch occasionally to see if it gets better but hopefully she doesn’t quit her day job…

What a funny voice and bad jokes, the comercials were not even funny.
It’s definitely improving – much better than last week. I see no issue in giving her a few weeks to continue to build her show.
I enjoyed it much more this week. Wanda seemed more at ease and her opening was quite funny. Still some work to do, but much better than SNL.
I watched. i think she is great – last night was only so-so. She will improve – Go Wanda!!
I love Wanda but this show is too painful to watch. Maybe I’ll try again in a few weeks.
I love Wanda but Im not missing the local news to watch her or George Lopez{& I love them both}
I think its funny to the people who find her funny, nt everything sat night live does is funny, i still watch sometimes
changed the channel at the first commercial- this show will be cancelled shortly…i had hope for her show but it really sucks!
I’ve seen Wanda on TV a lot and she has only made me laugh once. Honestly, if you’re going to be tackling the same controversial issues that everyone else does, you’d better be funnier while doing it. Otherwise, write some new material.
Don’t watch, never will. She’s a dope.
I think all of you are wrong! I love that show it is so much better than MadTV! She pokes fun at everything. People who don’t like are probably the republicans, and I say that because she talks a lot about politics. Keep going Wanda, my husbanda and I will watch.
Phew! I was looking forward to the Wanda Sykes show even though some of her comedy is “racey” but so far, the first two weeks, the show has been disappointing. If I might, I’ll enumerate #1 Keith Robinson…. he may be her sidekick but I feel he does not enhance her comedy. Actually, my first thoughts were.. where did HE come from. I don’t even find him funny. #2. Her openings focus too much on the political scene… and all one sided, Obama, Obama, Obama… tsk. I was always told that there are two subjects that people ( even friends) should avoid.. one- politics, second- religion. #3. Wandarama.. first week was okay but second week got caught up in the vagina stuff. #4. The bar scene… I’m not yet sure what I think about that. A different concept, but I’m not sure it is appreciated by many. In general, I’m concerned that it is just too different, too racial, too political and teetering for a fall.
I’m a HUGE Wanda fan, and I’m a Liberal, but she needs to cool it with the political stuff. Its just not funny, and its so preachy. The sex toy sketch last week was fantastic, it harkened back to the stuff they used to do on Chris Rocks show.
WHEN IS WANDA SIKES EVER FUNNY. SHE IS MEAN AND CONDESCENDINDLY SMALL MINDED.
Wanda’s premiere show was an entertaining surprise; as a welcoming alternative to SNL. Aside from FOX-TV’s decision to broadcast it in LowDef, getting past that, Wanda Sykes’ new show was refreshingly different, controversial and for the most part, funny!
In Week 1, she seemed nervous and somewhat unsettled several times, but Week 2 was far more loose, controversial, wild and entertaining. The first week’s panel was funnier in their exchanges, but they were more Entertainers than 2nd week’s panel. Loved many of the shots, and my hat’s off to Ruppert Murdoch for giving the potentially ‘Off-the-Hook’ Sykes an opportunity to demonstrate she can easily compete with Jimmy Kimmel, Dave Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon. The Wanda Sykes Show can only improve, and I’ll be watching every Saturday night to enjoy every moment as it does… GBJ
she is about as funny as a rectal
Wanda Sykes, With the exceptions to being a dope, grating, obnoxious, racist, and everything Jack Cass called her is all of the above and more. Wanda speaks on issues most comedians shy from. Real and Honest come to mind. Her first show on C.C. was great. Should never have been dropped. Her ShowTime specials and appearance at the White House Journalists, event. Funniest I’ve seen. I’m sure there is a great future for Wanda but, this show is not it. Let all of us who believe in her and love her hope she will find the right collaboraters to help her expose to the world her full comedic talents.
I’ve been watching and like it mostly but it’s a bit too heavy on the political side. I’ll be surprised if Fox lets it continue much longer.
