Most puzzling moment: Darrius Rucker as best new atrist (lol). i still have his solo soul cd but passed on his hootie efforts.

  • $ Says…

Swift will be hosting next year. If not the CMA’s then one of the other 20 that seem to air every year.

  • Dave

Have to agree, Female Vocalist of the Year was a joke for Taylor. I thought Carrie did a great job as host, the girl could sing the alphabet and keep everyone mesmerized, what a voice. And her stage presence has improved so much its unreal. She seemed so comfortable up there, which is amazing if you remember her from AI where she would sing great but look like a deer caught in headlights with her feet glued to one spot on the stage. Great job Carrie, you should have been FVOTY.

  • MJ

You misspelled “y’all” in quoting Jamey Johnson. >.>

I’m so over this Taylor Swift obsession. Pretty much no one there (with the exception of Johnson and vastly under-appreciated Little Big Town) had anything genuinely country to offer, so it’s not even that. I just don’t see why people think she’s that good. She seems nice, I respect her for writing her own songs and playing (some of) her own music, but when push comes to shove, she’s just not that good. Her voice is weak live and she sings about high school romances. She has potential, but she’s not to the point of deserving Best female Vocalist.

    Ok, rant over. :)

Taylor is a nice girl, and a pretty good song-writer, but as a vocalist she is SORELY lacking, and her live performances just show how much work is done to her voice in the studio. I like award shows that award talent, not popularity.

  • Telly B

Who are we kidding? She isn’t a great songwriter either? Her lyrics are truly dumb, diary-type platitudes about puppy love. And don’t tell me it’s her age, because Fiona Apple, Emmylou Harris, Alanis Morrisette, Joni Mitchell, Tracy Bonham and many others were writing insightful, smart, sharp lyrics in their teens.

I don’t get it…she can’t sing, she writes crappy teenybopping songs, it’s not like she has an amazing personality either, and she is a pretty girl, but nothing mind-blowing. What the hell is this girl doing that has so many people enamored???

    • Callie

Seriously. I don’t get it. She must have brilliant marketing behind her … ?

    • Dennis

Another excellent post – her song-writing is terrible

    • myself

i agree 100% she can’t sing and her songs sound like high school diary entries.

  • Kristy

Sugarland’s acceptance speech was straight up classy. Jennifer Nettles showed respect to a group that has walked at the top of the “duo” category for years, instead of focusing the attention on her own crew – Kristian Bush and Jennifer Nettles are straight up magnificent people!

  • Mags

I totally agree with you! I am a HUGE Taylor Swift fan, but lets be honest here, the only reason she won entertainer of the year was because she was the most “entertaning” part of the MTV awards. I felt her first performance was completly out of place and winning Female Vocalist of the Year? I stopped watching the show after that.

    • AT

Have to agree with your MTV reference as I have yet to hear one of her songs in full. The most I heard of a song was when my DVR got stuck while trying to fast-forward past it while watching SNL. I had to turn off the TV it was so bad.

And the Kanye jokes are getting old. Hope they don’t make it into 2010.

Remember the first time C.Underwood won Female Vocalist & every cried that she didn’t deserve it because she was on American Idol? Now everyone’s defending her, saying she should have won over Taylor. I agree, Taylor was not the best in the category, but life goes on. Next year, maybe voters will make her work a little harder for the awards.
As for the CMA awarding her everything because she was the biggest act this year, what about Shania? The Academy completely ignored her for how long, even after her record breaking albums & crossover success. Either the CMA is making up for that, or they really think a 19 year old singer-songwriter deserved it.

  • Denise Crook

Taylor is a terrible singer!.The CMA’s have gone so far away from country that I don’t bother to watch.I have even tuned out country radio.

  • Kellan

Giving Taylor Swift “Female Vocalist of the Year” was awful. I’ll give the girl credit that she is a talented song writer, and her well produced albums sound good. However, her actual singing talent is severely lacking. She’s so flat and just not very good. I understand she has the “young & pretty” factor, but I have yet to see Taylor sing live and sound anything like her album. I’m not hating on her because I DO think she has talent, but to give her the best vocalist award is just bizarre!

  • Darci

Whatever happened to Good Old Country, last nights performences were NOT country for the most part, I think I speak for alot of old timers when I say, We want classic country back

  • BW

to all of you saying she doesn’t deserve entertainer of the year, you are completely wrong. Look, I don’t listen to country music, nothing against it, just not my thing. However, she has had the biggest year of entertaining people. She had 2 huge pop crossover songs, sold out MSG for 2 nights, and hosted a pretty funny SNL. She has been the most prominent country entertainer of the year, so yeah, she deserves it. I think some of you are just mad that country is now going the way of other music, its more about the complete package (performing, looks, etc.) than just about the voice. Lets be real, pop, rap, r and b, even rock have all become like that. However, I don’t think its bad. It opens these new genre’s up to a new group of people. I never listened to one country song before Shania Twain, and while I’m not a country fan now, I’m open to certain songs. Just be happy that the music is reaching a new audience

    • Dennis

That is just the problem, the music reaching the audience is no longer Country but pop. Altering music to make it more mainstream destroys the spirit that made it great to begin with. If we continue on this path, all we will have is one unifying genre and that is not good for anyone.

  • RV

Over all the show was great.
I also agree that Taylor should have not won Female Vocalist.
Can anyone tell me why you never see Toby Keith at the CMAs.

    • Ashley

I’ve heard that he has informally banned them because the industry (which puts on and votes the CMA awards) has ignored him as a result of doing what he wants, rather than what the industry may want. Don’t know if it’s true, just what I’ve heard.

  • CF

I think it’s odd how Underwood’s brothel number gets applause, when country music has many conservative listeners who preach family values. It just shows a large disconnect.

    • DT

I agree, CF. Yet to me, it seemed like a sanitized, glossed-up sluttiness to boot, so it’s not even really down and dirty. It’s like she’s doing a “clean” version of Madonna. That’s my problem with modern country. It always seems to be imitating rock and roll and pop music without being rock and roll and pop music. They want to take the showier elements and spray off the grit, which makes them unsatisfying to me.

    • Dave

Conservatives like brothels too! Seriously though, being conservative doesn’t mean being a prude. I’m conservative and I liked the number. I think most people can have “family values” (which is really a meaningless phrase) and still appreciate a sexy upbeat number with good singing and dancing.

      • CF

I’m just wondering how many families watching the show with seven-year-old daughters will be surprised when, eight years later, their daughter is pregnant. Not because of one show, mind you. But add up all of this exposure to girls who can’t yet understand how behaviors lead to consequences, and you’ll see the influence.
