Yeah, Swift’s strength is her songwriting ability, not her singing. She hit a number of wrong notes in both performances last night (and why was she allowed two performances anyway?) I suspect she knows this which is why almost every TV performance is an over-the-top spectacle to distract from her weak, out-of-tune warbling.

    • Callie

Agreed … with comments about her lack of singing ability. Not so sure, though, that her strength is her songwriting ability. After watching SNL, I think her strength might be in comedy — but definitely nothing to do with country music.

One of the WORST moments was at the end when Brad P. was talking about Taylor and Carrie looked annoyed and tooted her own horn, yikes, I was embarassed for her, very obvious that Carrie was jealous. Meow, her claws come out when she felt another blond stole her spotlight.

    • Charley

Reading waaay too much into that- it was a cute FUNNY moment – not a jealous one

    • Emmy

Why would she be jealous? She has already won all those awards!

      • katie

Actually, Taylor is the first female to win EOTY…Carrie won it on the other country awards show.

      • Emmy

Carrie won EOTY in April at the 44th annual Academy of Country Music Awards.

      • Sarah

Carrie won EOTY at the ACMs because they were fan voted. The CMAs is voted by people in the industry, and Taylor won it…just saying

      • Justin

Actually…Reba has won EOTY at both the CMA’s(’86) and the ACM’s (’94). And she should’ve won Female Vocalist tonight…what a joke.

    • treee

and they needed a segway to close the show

      • Was Paul Blart: Mall Cop…

        ..in the show too?

      • wrong info…

Katie – Taylor is definitely NOT the first female to win EOTY. She’s the first teenager and youngest female to win…but she’s the 7th woman in CMA history along with Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Barbara Mandrell, Reba McEntire, Shania Twain and the Dixie Chicks.

    • Annia

Another blonde? Perhaps Kellie Pickler is the smart one to go red. LOL.

  • KEVIN

SUGARLAND was the best performance of the night! That song is hauntingly beautiful.

    • Amy

I was reading all of these comments waiting for SOMEONE to point this out! Ignore all the Taylor nonsense (for the record, I agree with ya’ll – she deserved EOTY I guess, but not the volcalist award. Still love her though) the best part of the night was Sugarland’s performance. Yes, their speech was uncomfortable for a second, but Jennifer Nettles can do NO wrong. Beautiful song, tremendous voice, mesmerizing performance. LOVED IT.
All in all, I loved the show, beginning to end.

      • MsDaisy

One thing’s for sure…no one ever complains about how bad Jennifer sounded live. She is flawless!

  • Torrence5

I agree with Taylor getting Entertainer of the Year – she was the “it” person in country this year. As for vocalist – she was not the best choice; however, the academy gets caught up in the hype & popularity of some artists & to be honest, the academy (with rare exception) has moved past “old timers” & is looking for something new & young to move forward with; while I totally disagree with this approach & think the merit of the awards are lowered by it, that is the trend.

    • Michael D.

You’re right, but I think the Academy should be professional enough to not get “caught up in the hype & popularity”, otherwise let’s just have a bunch of tween girls off the street cast the votes. As far as them looking for something new & young to move forward with, well – superior vocalists like Underwood and Lambert are right there staring them in the face.

      • huh?

to Michael D: Why the hell is Lambert mentioned on a discussion of CMA?

      • treee

to “huh?” – he’s talking about miranda lambert. not adam lambert

      • Lauren

to huh? Lambert, as in Miranda Lambert.

    • Leslie

I have a feeling that Taylor has peaked considering her limited talent. She has one heck of a machine behind her though.

  • bandit

Carrie Underwood has the worst style, she dresses like she’s a beauty pageant. And the girl has the personality of a tree stump, wish country music shows would stop making her host, she can sing, but she has no personality.

    • Telly B

I agree. I love her singing, and I appreciate her humble demeanor and her personal beliefs, but damn…she is like a gorgeous Stepford Wife. Nothing behind those beautiful eyes. No wonder her nickname is Farmbot…

      • Cathy

        You people are cruel.

    • Cathy

Wow, I think Carrie Underwood did a good job hosting. She didn’t write the monalogs, she was just saying what was put in front of her. Maybe the people who didn’t enjoy the show for one reason or another should have just turned the channel.

    • Ryan

Carrie Underwood has a great personality and did a great job hosting! Stop the hate! She and Brad were funny and did amazing!

  • Jon

Somewhere in New York, Al Pacino was clutching his heart and yelling, “Hoo-hah!”

Did we travel back in time to the ’90s? Way to get in a hot-topic reference there, Ken.

  • Maureen

Let me start off by saying that I DO like Taylor Swift, but I have to agree that she shouldn’t have won Female Vocalist of the Year. Her voice is “likeable” and cutesy, but winning over McBride, Lambert, Underwood and REBA FRICKING MCENTIRE was completely idiotic. I feel bad for what happened to the girl with the whole Kanye thing, but don’t just give her awards out the wazoo. Is she going to win Album of the Year at the Grammy’s next? >.<

    • JS

      Probably.

    • Lissie

“Album of the Year?” Hell no!

      • Ama

She won’t win but will be nominated.

    • Mrs m

I agree that Taylor is probably the weakest singer out of the group, but isn’t the award based on what kind of year a singer has had too? The other singers have had one, maybe two hits in the last year and Taylor has had a few more than that.

      • Ama

I think Entertainer of the year is based on the year you’ve had, but vocalist of the year needs to have the vocals to back it up, if not they need to change the award to female of the year. We might as well give Best Picture Oscar to Transformers because it had the best year in the box office.

    • Annia

I’m afraid the next thing we know is Taylor Swift wins the Nobel Peace Prize. LOL.

  • Telly B

Taylor was the recipient of a massive growndswell of sympathy and aww-shucks love for her Kanye-gate. And since she was already a pop-country crossover sensation, they gave her EOTY. (An award that imo is meanigless. A lapdog can be entertaining.) But VOCALIST of the year? You are telling me that Taylor’s whiny, woeful wisp of a voice is better than Carrie’s, Reba’s, Miranda’s, and Martina’s? That’s amazingly (and pathetically) obvious that they gave her the award because of her popularity, just like when Shania won those accolades…

  • Nikki

I don’t even think she deserved entertainer of the year. Just because she puts dramatic things into her performances, does not make them good. It just goes to show that she needs those things to distract people from her lack of talent as a singer. Others like Kenny, Brad, Keith and George go up on stage with a guitar and just play. Its nothing too showy, but they make you love country. There’s no reason she should even be attending the CMA’s. The only thing country about her is that she wears cowboy boots. I guess I can be a country singer too then.

    • Callie

Amen. And “dramatic” is putting it nicely. More like ridiculously over.the.top. And what’s with all the writing around on the floor and strutting around like Mick Jagger? And the hair tossing … what’s that about?

      • Callie

        I meant “writhing,” not writing.

  • Bostonian

AMEN to everyone commenting on Taylor Swift. The girl is an amazingly gifted songwriter, and seems as sweet as can be, but you do country music as a whole no favors by fawning over her for EVERYTHING. The girl CAN’T sing live. She always sounds terrible, however she did sound a little better on her second #. Speaking of this, why did they decide to give her two numbers? I wish they had a most successful year award, as I don’t even think she deserved Entertainer of the year award. I’ve been to her concert, and I must say I was not “entertained”. I’d much rather listen to one of her cd’s that have been enhanced. Give me any one of the other nominees for Entertainer of the year.

  • JS

I don’t quite get the hatred many direct at Taylor Swift – it seems like there is no in between with her – people either adore or hate her. She’s a beautiful girl who has some great songs (even with her “weak” voice) and presents a fairly good show, and was deserving of entertainer of the year.

    • Ama

People here don’t hate Taylor. They are just stating the obvious. She does not deserve all the awards they gave her. You admit she has a weak voice, how is she the female vocalist of the year. It is painful to listen to her. She is change-the-channel bad and definately the worst vocalist in that category. Entertainer of the year should not be “fairly good” but great. She is a talented girl, but there is a lot of room for improvement (especially with her live singing).

    • Callie

JS, it isn’t hatred. She just can’t sing. If she can’t sing, why should she win an award for, basically, “best singer”?

    • JS

Ama – “it is painful to listen to her, she is change the channel bad”. Callie – “She just can’t sing”. Obviously, there are a ton people out there who disagree with both of you. She’s selling her records to somebody!!! The CMAs (and all award shows) should reflect fan interest, not some sort of artsy requirement. This is precisely the reason that the Oscars are criticized so often.

      • Ama

        @ JS

I like Taylor, but she is a terrible live singer. I have her albums. I think she is a talented son writer and I like her music but only after it has been produced. Read the comments here. Most people have problems with her singing live.

How can all awards show reflect the fan interest. That will just be pointless. Originality, creativity and talent cannot be measured by the sales alone. The fans a lot of times go for generic, obvious, safe, recycled products (Transformers 2, NCIS, Britney etc). If you are looking for fan interest, then the people’s choice is the show for you. The CMA and the oscars are supposed to be about the respective industry honoring their own and I would prefer they base their awards on the merit of talent one artist compared to others and not who is selling more.

    • Hannah Lane

Okay, I was not going to comment on this, but now I feel compelled. I’m not a huge Taylor Swift fan, but I in no way believe that she was recipient of the Entertainer of the Year award because of sympathetic feelings to her because of Kanye West’s outburst. She was the best selling artist of 2008 (and the best-selling album was only out for 2 months before the year ended) and she headlined her own tour. She might not have the vocal chops as some of her other female competition or the experience as the men, but she definitely entertained this year. She had great record sales, great shows, and she stepped it up for country-pop crossovers. Okay, rant over.

  • Care

I agree about the singing. Her opening number was painful. However, she deserved Entertainer of the Year. This was the year of Taylor Swift. Good for you girl!

  • Charley

Agree 100 % except I don’t agree with entertainer either! Did you hear that first song??? It was awful!!! This was the most dissapointing awards show! However I loved the co- hosts and their chemistry – cute and funny!!

  • Sam

GivingTaylor Entertainer of the Year and Female Vocalist was a slap in the face to her competition. I think that she is a great song writer/teller but her voice has been very wobbly since the beginning. She is a great role model to young women however.

    • Teresa

I agree with you about the Carrie Underwood production number for Cowboy Casanova. I had loved the song and have been a big Carrie fan. But that production was too Britney Spears to avoid comparison. Left me wondering what was she thinking and whoever thought the Spears imitation was a good idea. And she didn’t look good in the hot pants at all — skinny legs I would have rather not seen. Looked ready for mental rehab without looking sexy. Sorry, Carrie, but fire whoever told you the money was spent well on that routine. I turned off the TV, hon.

      • LB

I think the prod. number was meant to be very similar to her video for the song. I think she even wore short shorts in the video as well.
I will forgive the remarks about the similarity to Britney. :) Carrie can sing!

  • Rebecca

re: Taylor Swift – the opening song with her “striptease” style dance was laughable.

    • Callie

      Amen.

    • megan

amen! it was the worst performance i’ve ever seen

    • Jay

She’s too young to be doing that! She might as well be in a nightclub! That was so wrong! Wasn’t this supposed to a family show? No family’s are ever going to watch The CMAs again! Thanks to Taylor Swift

      • Laura

Huge overreaction. I doubt any families were offended. She didn’t do anything worthy of “She might as well be in a nightclub! That was so wrong! Wasn’t this supposed to a family show? No family’s are ever going to watch The CMAs again! Thanks to Taylor Swift”. You’re taking it a little too far there.

      • james

calm down guy, you’re getting a little too overboard on this issue.
