As my colleague, Michael “The Awe-Inspiring” Ausiello has reported, the Kelsey Grammer sitcom Hank has been cancelled. Can’t say as I’m surprised: This was, unfortunately, a vehicle whose quality did not equal the talent of its star.
The question is, what should Grammer do next? The man clearly wants to work; he jumped from Back To You to Hank in the space of a season. Here are three ideas I have, plus a couple of things he shouldn’t do.
1. Sign up for a villain role in a cable drama; look what it’s done for John Lithgow on Dexter. I could totally see Grammer as a haughty bad-guy going head-to-head with Glenn Close on Damages, couldn’t you?
2. Think of doing a sci-fi or a period-piece. A man with Grammer’s radiant command of the screen and precise diction would be great in a down-and-dirty, Rome-style miniseries, or being the smart, cynical, middle-aged pro among a squad of young galactic explorers in a deep-mythology piece in the tradition of Battlestar Galactica.
3. Get a new behind-the-camera collaborator. Two good words here: Joss Whedon.
Here’s a couple of things I think Grammer should not do:
1. Another sitcom right away. The audience will love you if you give them a chance to miss you, Mr. Grammer.
2. For the love of god, don’t decide to host a talk show.
How about you? What do you think Kelsey Grammer’s next move should be?

Love the ‘Damages’ idea–maybe they should just keep throwing old cast mates of ‘Cheers’ on there as villains. I mean, who wouldn’t want to see Woody Harrelson, John Ratzenberger, and, of course, George Wendt, as some of the baddest lawyers in town? I’m just saying.
The trouble Grammar has is that he was one character for so long that the audience does not want to see him as somebody else. Still, there is hope for him. Remember Carroll O’Connor went from Archie Bunker’s Place, a comedy, to In The Heat of the Night, a drama.
I can see Grammer playing a stuffy college professor who moonlights as a PI in an hour-long dramedy.
play camerons dad on modern family
wow can you say genius
I personally can see Kelsey Grammer playing Patty Hewes brother. As we all know (Damages fans) we really don’t know much about Patty Hewes past. He would be an excellent addition to the cast.
Kelsey is a great comedic actor. He just needs to really take his time in deciding what his next gig should be.
I agree completely with this article!!!
Three little words: Ahh! Sideshow Bob!
I am not a fan of his. And I would be really upset if he signed up with Joss Whedon! I don’t know I just feel like Kelsey Grammar is a bit of a snob and would feel like genre sci-fi telly would be beneath him.
I guess that is not really fair to Mr. Grammar who might be a perfectly great guy. I do have to say I love his daughter in Greek – which I never thought I would.
he was in one of the greatest Star Trek the Next Generation episodes..”Cause and Effect”
He was in X-MEN 3! As a blue furball! I don’t think he’s a snob. I know we’re all thinking it: DOWN PERISCOPE 2: 2 DOWN 2 PERISCOPE!!!
Snob? Really? I think that just him being typed cast. Hell, the man was a serious alkie and cocaine addict back in the day…that’s pretty hardcore to me. I don’t know the man personally, I think he’s far from being a snob.
It is humorous that alkie and cocaine addict are used here to his credit.
He needs to be Frasier, we obviously are not willing to accept him as anything else. Hell I watched Hank pretending it was Frasier in the witness protection program. All you have to do is move Frasier to a new city and tell different stories. Back to you, simply Frasier working on television, come on people its not hard
I’d like to see him take on a challenging supporting role in some sort of dark indie film. Something completely against type. Something we wouldn’t expect. Maybe work with Richard Kelly or Darren Aronofsky or Wes Anderson.
Bring back Fraiser Crane
I agree on the Frasier sentiment. It won’t happen, but I would watch it if it did.
Do more film work. His performances in ‘X-Men 3′ and ‘An American Carol’ were awe-inspiring.
We need a bring back Frasier petition. Maybe if enough people voiced it we would get it
Yes!! Eleven seasons weren’t enough for us die-hard Frasier fans!
Kelsey Grammer is best when he’s Frasier. Silly and goofing around with Niles.
