'Supernatural' review: 'Changing Channels': Sam and Dean spoofed 'Grey's,' 'CSI,' and a sitcom

Supernatural may be surrounded by heavy-duty time-period competition — Grey’s Anatomy, CSI, The Office, Fringe — but it just keeps doing its demon-ganking thing, and Read the full post.

Fantastic episode! I definitely had my doubts going in but I should have known to trust Kripke and Co. Wonderful blend of humor and angst.

There were a couple of complaints about EW’s lack of coverage of Supernatural, and while I agree that I could do with far FAR less Twilight/Grey’s/House, I want to thank Ken for reviewing the show every now and then. This is one of the few “mainstream” sites that I’ve seen that cover our boys. Thanks for helping to spread the word on one of the best shows out there!

the spoofing of grey’s was so dead on, i couldn’t stop laughing. “this show has…ghosts? WHY??” cracking me up. i hope the younger viewers appreciated the knight rider bit as much as i did. i
i really love this show so much – i wish it got more credit from the critics. the writing is fantastic – it keeps a good balance of humor and drama, plus the pop culture references keep me entertained (some of my other favorite shows have been gilmore girls and psych, for exactly those same reasons). and jensen and jared are a great tv pair. i don’t know why more people don’t watch. they’re missing out.

Loved loved LOVED this episode. Brilliant writing.

Jared and Jensen knocked it out of the park this episode but special kudos has to go to Jared, far too often he’s straight man to Dean and he was just incredible with the comedy, I LOVE seeing this side of Sam and absolute kudos to Jared and the rest of the cast and crew. What a magnificent episode.

I agree. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Jared was the comic centre of the episode. He did a great job, and should get more of the comedy on the show.

Are we ever going to see Supernatural on the cover of EW?!? I’m really sick of seeing the same overrated shows on the cover…its about time a QUALITY show made the cover!

  • B

Oh, forgot to add…LOVED this episode :)

Did I love SPN on Thursday? I knew I would love this episode as soon as I saw the previews for it a while back. Knew it.

SPN on the cover of EW!

Enjoyed the episode but concerned about changing the premise. I don’t remember precisely, but the first time the Trickster appeared, didn’t he try to see to it that the brothers were killed, even if he wasn’t directly trying to murder them? So has the Trickster been Gabriel all along? Then why would HE try to kill Sam & Dean? Or is he just mimicking now & original Trickster still out there? Or he subsequently ‘took over’ Trickster at some point? Not that I expect the writers to provide clarity but they oughta realize fans aren’t going to just swallow any premise change blindly.

It doesn’t matter to me. The Trickster/Gabriel is one of my favorite recurring characters. Now that his identity is revealed, that means we could be seeing more of him. This episode was just great, right down to the Herpexia commercial.

Came in on the middle of the episode. It was okay but it was very similar to a movie I saw starring John Ritter and Pam Dawber called “Stay Tuned”. Identical storyline. If anyone else has seen it tell me what you think.

    To dohrayme

In the first episode we see Trickster, he is not trying to kill Sam and Dean, in fact he tells Dean that he likes him – he offers him, wine women and song to let him escape, he only fights them when they try to kill him. In the episode Mystery Spot, he does kill Dean over and over and over … but it is to teach Sam a lesson, which Sam did not learn by the way, at the end of the episode all is well. I think he’s been keeping tabs on them, but never had the intention to kill them permenantly, if that makes sense.

Definitely one of the most Hilarious episodes. But Man I wanted to know what the songs were in the show, some of the songs were pretty good.

  • Lia

I LOVED this ep, it was hilarious and covered some interesting ground leading me to believe we might see the trickster again soon.
And I loved the herpes video, it looked like it was killing Sam, lol

Does anyone know what kind of sunglasses Dean and Sam was wearing in the detective part of this episode? It looks very nice and want one for my own.
