Ian McKellen a 'Prisoner' of 'The View' this morning: Attacks, mistakes, and 'Mag-NETTO'

Poor Ian McKellen. He went on The View this morning to promote his new Prisoner miniseries, but the gals had other things on their minds. Whoopi wanted to know whether he was going to be “coming back in Harry Potter?” Whoops: He politely informed her he was in The Lord of the Rings. Understandable mistake — if you’re not into the fantasy genre, these things can seem similar, and Goldberg has been fighting off an illness the past few days that may have contributed to her minor confusion.

Then Sherri Shepherd referred to McKellen’s popular turn as the X-Men villain Magneto. Except she pronounced the character’s name “Mag-NETTO.” Again, maybe Sherri’s not into comic-book movies, okay, but you’d think she’d have done a little pronunciation preparation, since the X-Men franchise was clearly her designated question on those little blue note cards the hosts clutch.

But before all that, Elisabeth Hasselbeck was spoiling for a different fight. It looks as though someone had told her that the British McKellen had been given the swine-flu vaccine from his country’s nationalized health-care system.

Uh-oh: “nationalization” + Hasselbeck = Blonde Hulk See Red. Check out their exchange:

So, to sum up: McKellen was not given the swine-flu vaccine (Hasselbeck’s error). But he could have it free from the National Health Service, which he said is “not run by the government, but by the doctors and the hospitals.” To which Hasselbeck said, “Yeah, that’s what they’d like you to believe, I’m sure.” (Not the most gracious response from a host, would you agree?)

Then after McKellen gets applause from the (presumably American) View audience when he says, “I wouldn’t be as healthy as I am if I hadn’t had the National Health Service,” Hasselbeck yells over the clapping, “It’s my personal belief and the belief of many others than I do not want the government running our health care!”

But, but… you brought it up, Elisabeth; McKellen was just answering an initial (again, erroneous) statement you made about him getting the vaccine.

Thank goodness Whoopi then spoke loudly over Hasselbeck and the noisy audience (which was clearly getting agitated) to say, “But what about The Prisoner?” You know, the subject the luckless McKellen was there to talk about before being blindsided…

As they say at the end of every show, take a little time to enjoy The View.

It only takes a little time to TRULY enjoy “The View”. Like the 30 seconds before they start talking…

  • Lucy

that show, and especially Elisabeth Hasselbeck sickens me!!

  • JamesTKirk

How this stupid girl went from a reality show to trying to be a “journalist” just amazes me.

    • DB

i’m sure nobody consider her a so-called “journalist” beside maybe the other ignorant dumbos who agree with her, wait, i’m sure they don’t either.
beside the random health care talk that Hasselbeck brought up just for the sake of arguing with someone (i think it’s in her contract to be stupid at least once in each episode,) i’m actually more baffled by the fact that Ian McKellen was there in the first place! The Prisoner? to The View audience? Barking up the wrong tree!

  • Mel

I wish Hasselbeck would just shut it. It is one thing to voice your opinions, but the venom that she is constantly spewing, you know what they say, beauty is only skin deep…. And her husband is a crappy QB. HAHA! See my own little opinion there! (venom spewing forth)

  • Bobby’s Robot

She gets more loathesome with every second that passes.

  • Nick T

That was funny…I like Whoopi…Boo Hasslebeck

  • crispy

Why in the world was A&E trying to promote The Prisoner to The View’s audience?! Is it bizarro day?

  • kate

What is wrong with her?? She is the stupidest person I have ever seen on tv. Why do they continue to let her on this show….it was much better when she was gone. Hopefully her rich football hubby will impregnant her again SOON.

    • Perry

Her bum of a husband hasn’t worked in years. Notice how Elizabeth only mentions him in context to nonsense like changing diapers. She is too embarassed to admit that he hasn’t been picked up by a team in two years.

  • Lola

This show makes me ashamed to have a va-jay-jay.

  • Chris

there aren’t words for how screwed up that whole situation was…

  • S

I wonder what happened when she found out he was gay?

    • laura

LOL!!! I think she still does not know!

  • Chris

Another great and idiotic moment for Sarah Palin Jr. Way to waste a great actors time.

  • Jim H

Elizabeth is a vile, ignorant and wretched host. Someone comes on to promote a TV show and she attacks him for something that didn’t happen and then try’s to tell him how is country’s health care works?

    • Perry

      Well said, Jim.

    • angel

I find it very entertaining that she corrected Sir Ian on who runs the NHS in his own freakin’ country

  • Lea

I’m amazed that there’s still anyone who likes to watch any of the twits on that show

    • Daniel

This whole interview was a travesty. The only one that didn’t make an ass out of herself was Joy. Dumbledore? Mag-netto? Health Care? Good grief, I’m glad these youtube postings are so short.

  • davidsask

It is so sad they keep letting her come back after maternity leave. Did she not state she was done with having kids now, shame the show is so much better without her!

  • Perry

Why is that dingbat still on the show? There are thousands of bright women out there looking for work, and ABC keeps that tool on. She is rude, disrespectful and ill informed. She also is under the incorrect assumtption that she runs the show since she talks over everybody and interrupts constantly. She has to go!

  • Makeith

Lola, that was one of the funniest responses i’ve read on here in a long time; good job!

  • bhm1304

Someone should pop that little no nothing jerk in the mouth. You have one of the most gifted actors agreeing to do your piece of s$it show to promote his current project, and you want to start a fight about something you know nothing about, except what Rush tells you to think, because your panties are twitching? Get a job sweety.

  • ang

Ok I live in Canada – and what is so bad about universal health care? Now our system isn’t perfect, but I’d rather have what we have then what the US doesn’t. Please don’t hit me…

    • Perry

hahahaha Most of us want Universal Health Care.

      • ang

ok – see I don’t know how Americans feel about…I guess Elisab!tch doesn’t speak for the majority? LOL Good to know.

    • Amanda

Ang, a lot of us would LOVE to have universal health care! There are those politicians in the United States who get a ton of money from health care lobbyists, and these are the talking points they put forth to have us believe that universal health care will cause terrible things to happen and the sky to fall. I certainly won’t hit you! I’d like to hug you for being someone to finally talk sense about health care!

      • ang

ok and isn’t it just an option for people who want to have this health care? They’re not forcing it on anyone (I might be wrong)..trust me, take the option. It might have its flaws, but the system you have now clearly isn’t working.

  • Makeith

Oh yeah, please stop watching the show; it will eventually go away!

    • ang

And EW STOP reporting on it. Stop the vicious cycle.

  • bedc01

I have a question, do people really watch this show? I mean, I have never seen it and this is the first time I attempted to do so, and wow, what a horrible show.. and also, E.H. further proves that you will never have a smart and coherent conversation with a neo-con

  • smitty76

Why is hasselback the bad guy when the other two dolts couldnt be bothered to find out anything about their guest? And Hasselback may be nauseating, but shes far from the dumb one, remember it was sherri who wasnt sure if the world was round or not.

    • Bobby’s Robot

Because she was disgracefully rude to her guest.

      • Daniel

As I said earlier, it is just as rude to not know anything about the guest, such as when he’s returning as Dumbledore, or about his role as Mag-NETTO. And yes, elisabeth was insanely rude to Ian. But whoopie and Sherri were too.

  • Peggy

Elizabeth Hasselbeck is really a blonde bimbo. I don’t generally attack members of my own gender, but she was definitely in the wrong. I get that she is the lone “conservative” voice on the panel, but to attack a guest because of the healthcare policies of his country is so stupid.

    • Amanda

I’m not a conservative myself, but I think its people like Ms. Hasselbeck who give the political affiliation a bad name. I’m sure there are normal conservatives out there somewhere! It’s sad that she’s what The View selects to represent them.

  • Michael

This is so biased. I thought the Elisabeth Hasslebeck “attack” was fine, it wasn’t anything to get crazed over. But like many of your reviews, this one too was slanted to the left. If anything the worst part of the interview was Whoopi’s little mistake, if you can even call that a “worst part.”

    • bedc01

See what I mean? Can’t have an intelligent conversation with such loonies

    • JamesTKirk

right with you bedc01…intelligence is a very lacking thing among these neo-cons. I don’t call them conservatives cause I am friends with a lot of smart conservatives. There’s a difference in my opnion. To not think it was an attack just shows the stupidity and biasness of some of these people.

  • Sean

Seriously? Hasselbeck is going to “argue”…. nationalized health care with…… an actor……from a different country?! Which level of wrong should we start on? If you don’t like what British citizens have for health care, by all means do NOT move there. Let them get “conned” into health on their own. Her holier-and-better-informed-than-thou routine wouldn’t be so annoying if she was at least capable of using CORRECT facts ( and there are some to support a conservative point of view) but she is incapable of even that. Maybe a little more time on a remote island (this time with some books) might help!

    • Heather

Some con! I’ll take that con (and Canada’s since that’s where I live) any day! LOL

  • London

OMG Elizabeth is such a horror to the guests. He has too much class to tell her to shut up about things she knows nothing about. And then Whoopie makes that stupid mistake about Harry Potter……….. Im cringing!!! omg

  • a person

I dislike Elizabeth-i’m sure Mckellen didn’t go on the show to talk politics and healthcare! but i really want to know how Whoopi managed to confuse Dumbledore and Gandalf because beside the beard and that they are magical the two characters are pretty different-one runs a school for witchs and wizards while the other is trying to destroy a ring (unless u compare the ring and horcruxes)

  • J.

What’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck famous for anyway? Oh, that’s right, being on Survivor. Way to go. In the mean time stfu!

  • LeviMary

THIS is why so many people do not like Elisabeth: she’s a TERRIBLE host (not to mention shrill, humorless and grating), and it’s not because she’s a conservative Republican! The poor guy was going on there to promote his work, not to get into a debate over government-run health care. Ian is not a politician, pundit or doctor, so why goad him into a political debate regarding health care? Talk about him! I imagine if there was a “TV Hosting 101″ course, this is what they would teach on day one.

  • Epiphany

I’m British and not only did Ms Hasselbeck sound incredibly ignorant about something she clearly knows little about, she was outrageously rude to her guest. If the people defending her cannot see why she was bang out of order, they need an etiquette lesson (to quote Frasier Crane).
