'Southland' lives! Picked up by TNT, to air opposite 'Jay Leno'

southland2_l

Southland has found new life and the home so many of us had hoped it would. Southland, cancelled by NBC when it scrambled its schedule to make room for The Jay Leno Show five nights a week, will air on TNT starting in January.

TNT announced this morning that it plans to re-air the series’ original seven episodes NBC broadcast, plus the six new hours that NBC ordered but chose not to air. Depending on ratings, TNT will order more. The cable network plans to run the tough cop drama Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. — opposite The Jay Leno Show. “This is a perfect opportunity for us to introduce the series to new viewers,” said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks, in a statement released today.

So what do you think? Can Southland thrive on the same station that brings us The Closer, Saving Grace, and other highly-rated scripted dramas? Is this a good decision?

Me, I’m looking forward to seeing how those dangling storylines involving the officers played by Regina King and Michael Cudlitz play out.

How about you?

Congrats to Southland fans, I don’t watch it myself but it seems like a perfect replacement for Saving Grace once SG ends.

  • Adam

I really am syked..I cannot wait till lit premiers

    • Mimi

Kudos to TNT on picking up this show. I will watch the re-runs and happily await the new episodes! It is one of the best dramas on television. NBC will regret their decision to can this show!

    • Carol

Ditto! I’ve never cared for Leno one iota! LONG LIVE Southland. Awesome cast hey!!!

    • Dug

Agreement on the greatness of this news! This a great, well written show with an awesome cast. I absolutely cannot wait!

    • AJ Simon

Good for TNT, this show was awesome. I would hope they focus more on the two cop leads Ben McKenzie and the older guy – very interesting dynamic. I hope the guy who got shot survived. But please whatever you do, get rid of Regina King – her storyline always seemed out of place (some sort of lame love story) and slowed down each episode – in fact, the best episodes left her out or showed very little of her.

      • Jay Singer

Are you out of your mind? I love her and her story-lines. Ben McKenzie and his partner, Michael Cudlitz, are the best.I love watching all of the entire ensemble cast and their story lines. Looking forward to seeing Susan Blakely as Ben’s mother.

  • Brooke

    Huh. This might actually work.

  • EMB

Thank you, TNT!!! Long live, Southland :)

  • Jane

Best. News. Ever. Down with Leno!

    • Kat

Now now, Leno used to be funny. I honestly don’t know what happened. Ever since he’s been on in Primetime it hasn’t been the same. But you’re right, this is some great news abot Southland.

      • melissa

No the best news ever would be if they pick this AND Life up. I’m so sad they cancelled that show. I am in love with Damian Lewis.

    • AJ Simon

Down with Mercy – a laughably stupid show about a tough as nails nurse who is smarter than everyone and cares twice as much as everyone. And she looks like a supermodel to boot. Crap like this is why tv stinks today.

  • Lemon

Ha! Well done, TNT. Well done.

  • Elizabeth

    Whoot whoot! Love you TNT!

  • Mister Whirly

I’m sure they will ruin the new ones but I am happy that I will get to see the six that were done for S2.

    • t3hdow

How? If anything, TNT will give Southland MORE creative freedom than NBC would’ve given them. Unless the writing gets worse in Southland’s camp, it’ll only get better.

      • Alex

They’re keeping the same writing staff, and since TNT is a cable network they have more freedom with plotlines. It will be even BETTER on TNT.

  • mrs. robinson

I’m very much looking forward to more Southland.

  • Lucy

this is outstanding!! in your face, Leno!

    • jenn

Yeah, this really makes NBC look like a bunch of hacks.

  • barb

I wish they would have done this with LIFE. : (

    • Malaika

      Agreed.

      • Amy

Oh don’t remind me! It still hurts that Life was cancelled. That show was simply fantastic.

      • RMW

        Agreed times two.

    • WWWeaves

Life would have been a perfect show for six 13 episode seasons.

      • sammyjulia

I wish LIFE had been picked up…Strong cast. Interesting characters…
Southland isn’t even close…to me the show was just a lot of driving around and chatter. Writing was weak.
        There is some irony that
TNT will broadcast this against Jay….talk about boring…

    • Susan Moritz

I agree with Barb – they should pick up Life, too. Every time there’s a quirky, thought provoking show, they take it away. Bring back Life!

    • May S

Oh, I know. Life being cancelled crushed me when I heard about it. I adored that show so much. :(

    • Mike

      Ditto! I’m still mourning Life.

      • bootsycolumbia

I adored Life and still miss it.

  • hihi

Thank you TNT for supporting quality television!

  • conor O’Brien

excellent news, I will watch for sure, do you think they will have the swearing cuss words not bleeped out now?

  • Andy Bluebear

As much as I like the show, if it tanks now and gets canceled, then that should be the end of it. With all the media coverage it’s gotten lately, a second chance on a new network, and finally, lower ratings expectations for TNT, this is a second chance many canceled shows pray for. I HOPE it succeeds, and wish them the best. Btw, what is considered ‘good’ ratings for TNT? What do shows like the Closer and Saving Grace usually get ratings wise?

    • BlatantURLPimpingMustDie

I think The Closer pulls about 8 million on a good week?

      • Jackie

Which is very high for TNT.

  • pop

i hope this wins a lot of awards! nbc is nuts with the whole leno thing. with it being on cable i hope it gets even a little more gritty.

    • Josie

      agreed!

    • Em

How long do people expect the Leno thing to continue? Is there a projected date at which they’ll give up and yank him off the air?

      • Karen

They gave Leno a two year deal…high or low ratings he will air. Plus they have nothing to replace him with.

    • LoveTV

      Right on!

  • NJ EJ

Great news. Hopefully the producers can change the six unaired episodes (editing, writing) to reflect the freedom being on cable will give them.

  • Rose Moore

    Good news! I can’t wait!

  • D

Yay!!!! This is a great show, with the fabulous Regina King. Perfect that it will air against Jay Leno!

    • sutherngurl

Yes, I love Regina King, she is wonderful in this, and I will be watching in January!

  • gigi

Good for Southland! Although I wasn’t a big fan of the show, I’m glad to see cable stepping up and picking up shows that the “Big 3″ take a premature pass on.

  • Cat

Hooray for TNT!! I love the poetic justice of airing it opposite Jay Leno. Can’t wait to see the new episodes!

    • Lorie

I love it, too! This is awesome news.

      • MsSunidaze

Agreed. So happy they picked it up. Then when I read it would run opposite Jay Leno…made me smile more. :)

  • mattsmom32

This is the news I’ve been hoping for. I’m positive it’s going to do great on TNT. It deserves this second chance and will prove that TNT did the right thing by taking a risk. THANKS TNT! :D

  • Kevin

    Yes!! Totally made my day!

  • Natalie

I hope Southland kicks Jay’s booty. Stupidest move NBC ever did was give this guy a 5 night a week, primetime gig. Dumb…

  • Anon.

If only they could have done the same for “Life”……

  • susan

    Thanks TNT! Can’t wait!

  • MoBec

Thank You TNT! Tuesday at 10 PM – PERFECT!

  • LadyJNewYork

Alright!!! Glad to hear that, I liked that show and will be watching!! Too bad “My Own Worst Enemy” wasn’t picked up, oh well I’ll settle for Southland….LOL

  • ella

    Three cheers for TNT!
    Down with NBC!

  • Sarah Tondello

Way to go TNT! Make NBC wish they would have stuck it out with this show!!

  • Jackie

I didn’t watch Southland originally but I will watch it now if only to stick it to NBC. Let’s get as many viewers as possible shall we?
ps I’m glad TNT came through. They have some really good programming. It’s one of my favourite channels.

    • JT

Do you have a Nielson box?

      • Lori

Does anyone REALLY have a Nielsen box? Seriously – does anyone know ANYONE who actually HAS a box?

      • mscisluv

I have never met anyone personally who has a Nielsen box…I did know someone who was asked to write down everything they wrote and send it back to Nielsen though. Apparently, that is common, but so outdated.
