I have read most of the comments and those who favor Lee are in the right. As a community of modern day African Americans, we need to present our selves the way whites do in media. We need to have a uniformed dignified manner about ourselves, and not that of those characters in Perry’s movies or shows. We spend so much of our time trying to be funny, and disarming that the true meaning of our people is lost and what is left is the shadow of what we use to be. As for the comment made by the white couple who “love” Perry’s movies, they would because they are use to blacks acting like clowns. It is evident with our president if he was an Uncle Tom they would love him but he is a strong multi dimensional Negro so they slander him in fear. The same goes with our arts and entertainment, why do you think BET has been on for so long. Lastly, as black people in high profile situations we need not fight or say damming things in public because white media is ready to twist them and portray us like animals.
Crabs in a bucket!
bucket!!!! lol, that sounds like a mr brown statment. wow, where do i start? I’ve read most of these comments and heard alot on the radio this morning. back in the day, i love me some spike lee joints, today i love mr perry. i won’t take sides cuz both these men have more money and power then we can imagine. Mookie, da Mayor, Buggin out, Dap, Madea, Mr Brown, Joe all had one thing in common: They spoke their minds and said what needed to be said. Yes, they’re all made up characters, but they came from the hearts and imaginations of two great movie powerhouses. They’re entitled to their opinions, and no one is changing anyone’s mind, to each is own. But this whole situation has us at odds yet again, like ‘the man’ wants us to be. let’s just agree to disagree and enlighten as well as entertain. God bless
Amen!

Frogs on a Log!!
Does Spike Lee so harshly critique those movies where black men are pimps, the women are whores, both are crack addicts, and every other word is F, N, and MF. People are tired of seeing movies where all black folks can do is curse and shoot each other. You go Tyler!
Tyler Perry is a hack.
I have to side with Spike on this one. Perry is fine as Madea, but the rest of his characters are cliches. All the men, are evil, or buffonish. The women are all victims, sassy black females or church-going Bible thumpers. His TBS shows are not funny. I prefer the old 70s sictoms like Sanford and Son, good Times and The jeffersons myself. As least those shows were funny!
That may be true, but he has more guts then most men do. He got through to do it. People with passion take chances. Remember your mother saying try it, you may just like it. If you don’t, don’t try it again. I love the people that have done nothing with their live except read about it. They never get up off their bushes to do anything that takes technical skill, or creative practices, they just comment. I’m an artist, so I know the game haters that should be picking cotton, or working for someone else to embezzle your money
stick to working for the master.
I’m happy that Perry is financially successful. I just think he needs to grow as an artist.
And if he doesn’t want criticism of his work, then he picked the wrong business.
MishSD on March 16, 2010 Zumba is THE best workout and you rlaley don’t feel as if you’re working out. It truly is a party! Having taken Zumba many places, I can honestly say the BEST local instructor is Kelly Reid at Dance Unlimited in Oceanside! Her music and moves and attitude make Zumba so much fun!
I completely disagree with Spike. Something I can’t stand is two successful black people bickering in public..giving racist whites another thing to say “haha look at the coons”. Somethings shouldn’t be said in mixed company. Spike lee should have addressed Tyler like a man, in private about his movies. He uses the funny characters great. I prefer his plays to the movies. Give him time. From what I have seen his movies are getting better. Honestly, these guys are in completely different planes. Its like comparing michael jackson to the beatles . (Just an example). P.S. I hated bamboozled.
I LOVE Tyler Perry movies and plays. I can relate because they are the black experience and those people did/ and still do exist. I grew up with Madea, Uncle Joe, and Mable! Yes, some people would have you think they didn’t/don’t exist but they are real and often time hillarious in the messages they gave.
Cory, as a black woman I have to emphasize that there is no more a “black” experience than there is a white experience. We have the common experience of living in a discriminatory society, but aside from that, many of us come from vastly different backgrounds with vastly different experiences and personalities. I do not see my mother or grandmother in Madea, and neither do many other African Americans, so don’t proclaim that a stupid Tyler Perry movie depicts THE black experience…it depicts A TYPE of black experience. Don’t stereotype your own race.
No crabs pulling Perry down on this end. I’m happy he’s financially successful. Just wish his movies were better.
We all can be better… at least he’s starting. President Obama will do better once he gets rid of the good ole boys from the 1600′s so we can start new. How many screenplays have you written?
There needs to be more black directors to accurately portray all aspects of Black culture, not just Tyler Perry, and not just Spike Lee, either. Having the two of them trade verbal jabs at each other like filmmaking is some kind of turf war is ridiculous.
I would love to see Perry evolve and grow from what seems to be his comfort zone. I don’t want to watch the same story over and over again.
I just love how blacks are able to knock and tear each other down instead of elevating and supporting each other. What happens when a black comedian makes it big? Everyone suddenly has an opinion about how much of a sell out they are, as if they themselves wouldn’t want to enjoy that same level of success. It’s the same thing all the time; all these no-bodies claiming that Perry’s work is ‘one-dimensional, doesn’t portray the black experience, blah.. blah.. blah.. if you think it could be done better, why aren’t YOU doing it better then? That’s what it boils down to.. pure, uninhibited jealousy that someone else managed to make something of themselves while you have to settle for reading about them on some stupid online blog.
Keep doing what you’re doing, Tyler.. haters will hate, the rest of us appreciate!
Amen, Steve. Spiro Agnew correctly labeled these snobby critics as “An effete corps of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as ‘intellectuals’. “
Steve, I understand what you are saying but at the same time, there are people like me, and other filmmakers that are actually trying. We’re biding our time, trust. It’s not that we don’t want to support him, because I will attest to the fact that I did support him when he first came out. I even went against the grain and did a project on him (and black Hollywood) for a thesis. However, I’m not going to stand by something or support someone just because they are black. If they’re on some bullshite, they are on it, and I reserve the right to call them on it, as do other people who can see past the facade. He’s doing the same thing that white hollywood has done to us for years. He is setting black actors back. Period. And that, I will not support, no matter how great the actor is, sometimes your integrity has to be sacrificed. And that is what is truly sad. Just because we’re the same color doesn’t mean I have to support him, or anyone for that matter, if I do not believe in what they are standing for.
Bernie Mac never sold out!
Does Spike Lee have a movie coming out here soon? Cause he’s obviously trying to cash in on publicity.
You said it.
Spike Lee is entitled to his opinion just like anyone else; however, there is a time and place for everything. In my opinion Spike Lee should have shared his concerns privately with Tyler Perry instead of calling him out in public, thus causing divisiveness. Spike Lee should have showed up like an adult and behave as one, instead he chose to publicly criticize another brother who is producing movies in a style that works for Mr. Perry and his audience, just as Mr. Lee has had the opportunity to produce movies using the style he prefers. I believe Spike Lee was mean spirited in this case, and did not use mature judgment. There was no need for me to know what Spike Lee felt, if Mr. Lee cares so much about the image of African-Americans on TV and in movies then all he had to do was call up Tyler Perry and give him his feedback or he could have reached out to Tyler Perry as a mentor to help him get better at his craft. I do think in this matter, the green eyed devil got into Mr. Spike Lee. “Do the right thing”, Mr. Lee.
Well said, Angela!
why is it that when someone does something good, there’s always a fool the devil uses to bring them down?
Praise the Lord!
