Michelle Obama on 'Jay Leno,' plus Arsenio Hall in the least-funny thing you'll see all week

First Lady Michelle Obama appeared on The Jay Leno Show to do one of those “10 @ 10″ segments, and — well, the poor woman:

But wait, there’s more! You haven’t heard Jay ask her how the Obamas celebrated the first birthday of their dog:

But the really grim segment was Arsenio Hall, once a late-night talk show host himself, now billed as one of Jay’s “correspondents,” doing a little bit he likes to call “This Is What They Said, This Is What They Meant”:

Wow. Impersonating Kanye West drunk on “Hennessey”? Does it get any funnier? Any less funny?

why do you hate leno so much? it’s getting old and your recaps are boring.

i agree. leno isn’t terrible. he’s certainly not the funniest but he’s not as bad as ken tucker makes him out to be

  • Theo

As much as I hate Leno…this isn’t THAT bad. I mean the Arsenio bit is stupid and I feel like they should have rehearsed their thing with Michelle more but it wasn’t painful to watch.

  • Katie

The Arsenio piece was a bit hit-and-miss, but the 10@10 with Michelle Obama was cute.
(what kind of questions WERE you expecting Jay to ask – how would you solve climate change?)

EW, I get it – if Jay Leno is successful, it gives you less teevee people & shows to drool over. But your hate for the show is a HUGE turn-off.

Jay Leno’s show also keeps hundreds and hundreds of people unemployed.

I thought the Arsenio Hall bit was LAME. I enjoyed Michelle Obama. She was warm, funny and I think she did a good job.

  • James

I enjoyed the 10 @ 10 with Mrs. Obama, and Arsenio’s thing was had its moments, I agree with everyone here though that Ken Tucker needs to lay off hating Jay Leno, and let him do this, it’s actually a good show people! Also, I guess he’s only watching because Craig Ferguson was in repeats this week :/

  • sam

Mrs. Obama was warm and humorous. If you want to laugh out loud, watch Ferguson. Jay is like an old friend and his show is not great, but it’s not terrible if there is nothing else to watch. Get over it–I have wasted hours of my life watching lame 10 o’clock dramas–Jay is no worse than they were.

I’m 100% with Ken on hating Jay. It’s like people have become conditioned to like Jay because he’s harmless, like warm milk, but truth is he was NEVER meant to be a talk show host. Decades later he’s still a shill and crap interviewer and too desperate for a laugh and steals: that “what they really meant” thing sounds like a rip off of Stephen Colbert.

The Jay Leno Show is a celebration of mediocrity. If Michelle Obama gives the only natural unforced performance on a COMEDY, you might want to re-think your opinions. Jay couldn’t even read off of his cards without stumbling…NBC said they put Leno on at 10pm so they would have comedy in the 10pm hour. If Leno’s not funny(reading questions off cards is NOT funny) and Arsenio’s not funny and the show’s not funny…how is it possibly entertaining…it’s an embarrassing piece of crap and should be cancelled.

  • jets

oh, and notice in Jay’s signiture “comedy” pieces “Headlines” and “Jay Walking,” the jokes aren’t anchored on Jay being funny, but on people and mistakes being stupid. and how annoying that the opening is all about Jay, with pictures of Jay growing up flashing up, as if he’s the greatest entertainer to walk the earth. Face it: guy just got lucky in getting a job he’s not good at and succeeding by targeting all the old or lazy people who love bland comdey or follow whatever they think they’re supposed to.

Leno isn’t funny at all. Canned jokes & just follows the same dopey formula to attract his unthinking lemmings…maybe Leno could rip Stern off some more…

  • RMW

Jay’s show is horrible, but this bit with Mrs. Obama was fine, thanks to her natural charm.

  • Casey

More Leno bashing and more bland commentary from this writer.

    • CC

If you actually think Leno is funny, it is no wonder you think this commentary is bland. Your judgment’s way off.

  • DavidJ

They’re STILL doing that 10@10 thing?? I would have thought after the first few painfully awkward and uncomfortable attempts they would have ditched it.
I like Jay and all, but man, his show is just as lame as it gets. At least his Tonight Show had a little bit of dignity.

  • DW

Ken, I would prefer more of a recap of these clips so I don’t actually have to watch them to know how bad they are. Why do you insist that we suffer through Leno with you?

  • @ImStillToni

it was just HORRIBLE! I’m still mad I wasted tivo space on a friggin satellite feed. I felt so bad our First Lady had to put up with that nonsense. Leno needs to be pulled ASAP.
