So says CNN inventor Ted Turner. Of course, Turner also co-created the 1990-1993 cartoon series Captain Planet and the Planeteers, combining superheroes with ecology themes.
In a wide-ranging chat with Bloomberg.com yesterday, the 70 year-old former owner of CNN said he’d like “CNN to report to me again and the Cartoon Network… I’d put Captain Planet on [again] so kids could see the environmental hero instead of Superman.”
Ah, Captain Planet. That name made me nostalgic for a crappily-animated but good-hearted cartoon I have ridiculously fond feelings for. Before you look at this clip, quick: Can you name the five young “planeteers” and their powers, who combine to form Captain Planet?

So is Ted Turner going to do like that episode of Robot Chicken and dress up as Captain Planet to save the world from pollution?

Haha, I’ve never watched Captain Planet before, but several of my friends enjoyed singing the theme song. I can’t remember the characters, except for Wheeler, because my brother made a film at school about Wheeler some years later. x)
Any theme song with the phrase ‘torn asunder’ is 100% pure amazing.

OH WOW! I used to love CP! Let’s see…it was Kwame, Gi, Linka, Wheeler, and Ma-ti, and the Earth Spirit (Whoopi Goldberg) was Gaia. Wheeler was my favorite, he was the stupid American who always had to be taught the right way to do things. One neat fact–the Soviet Union fell around production of the show, so the character of Linka, who was originally from Soviet Russia, had to be re-described as being from “Eastern Europe”. Sort of a neat documentation of history. I liked the first season best, that had all the superstars as the villains–Meg Ryan, Ed Asner, Martin Sheen, James Coburn, Dean Stockwell, Jeff Goldblum. Ah…memories…
Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, Heart… when your powers combine, I am CAPTAIN PLANET, grew up on this stuff and loved it, please bring it back!!
