Third straight terrible episode. Only time I laughed was at Abby Elliott’s very funny and accurate Anna Farris impression. This show needs an entirely new writing staff. The sketches this year are simply not funny. It’s too bad because there are a lot of talented cast members who are being completely wasted.
Abby Elliott did a great Anna Farris.
Dead on. I was looking down at the computer and I heard her voice and thought it was Anna Farris at first.
2 words: Fell asaleep.
New word? asaleep?
I sort of liked it. I love Drew Barrymore. She worked well with what she had, even when the material failed her. Kristen Wiig is the funniest girl on the show, even if she plays the same character. Kenan Thompson on weekend update was very funny to me. Even if I do Maya A, Kenan Thompson is funny. I know people dislike him, but I usually enjoy his impressions. I liked Celebrity Ghost Stories. I laughed through all of it(except for the one the new girl did, since I had no idea who she was supposed to be).
All in all, an ok episode, with some really stupid moments.
You’re the target audience the writers now shoot for – low expectations, little or no sense of humor.
It’s like we’re in the same predicament as the polar bears pictured on raft-sized ice fragments, only we are aware that a couple of degrees farenheit up or down could spell doom or survival. Unless you’re the one who is laughing all the way to the bank, the present political and economic situation is depressing in every sense of the word. Drew’s movie didn’t really open big and the HOPE that we all bought into may not be a match for those who sell and use Viagra and Botox. I doubt they’ll be cancelled for bad reviews…do they ever not win their time slot? Who is their competition? They need to be challenged. No one can be consistently at the top of their form week in and week out.
Aren’t you a bitter old man. Complaining that Matt Damon does a better Matthew McConaughey than Justin Long? At least Justin Long can do a Matthew McConaughey impersonation! Regina Spektor is a just cross between Tori Amos and Billy Joel? She’s wonderful, better than most of the garbage people listen to. Maya Angelou’s poetry is lousy? That was a really smart thing to say.
“At least Justin Long can do a Matthew McConaughey impersonation”
Everyone is entitled to their opinion…but you’re definitely in the minority.
Did you really just call Maya Angelou lousy? I hope someone strikes you down.
And if you’ve ever actually heard Regina Spektor’s albums, you would know she’s one of the most original artists out there today. I can’t believe you called Angelou that still…..
Is Maya Angelou untouchable or something? Why is everyone bent out of shape because they think her poetry is lousy?? Most poetry is lousy.
Regina Spektor is a glorified novelty act – sort of a female Ben Folds.
Yeah, give Maya Angelou the Nobel Prize in literature….
My army of housewives shall defend my favorite people and things to the death.
Very weak night, Bill Hader is the main reason I even bother to tune in sometimes. I just couldn’t believe they did a Sharon Osbourne joke. Really SNL?
I’ve been watching Saturday Night Live since the beginning. It has always been a hit or miss kind of show, whether it be the performers or the writing at fault. It’s becoming a bit more obvious of late that it misses more than it hits. And, for the record, Maya Angelou’s “poety” sucks big time.
What has happened to Fred Armisen’s Obama? Last night’s impersonation was terrible.
Hate the Gilly character as it’s not funny at all but having Drew in the sketch helped a little. I did like the Anna Faris impersonation but that was about the only highlight.
Personally I did feel that this was a slow week. But I never actually hate an episode of SNL. Because they usually have a few sketches that I like. But I really didn’t like Barrymore. I kind of thought she was annoying. I like the beginning with the Barrymore thespian family. And I don’t know about you Tucker but I kind of like the way they’re doing Obama jokes. At least someone is trying. I don’t hate Obama, he’s cool, but after a while of praise from every comedy show in the world he kinda needs to get taken down a peg. Way better than Bush though.
This season of SNL looks to be the beginning of one of those dry spells that SNL has once or twice a decade. I thought Reynolds was given nothing to do last week and might have shined had he more to work with. Barrymore has been great in the past and is a proven commodity, so the show is definitely to blame for this mediocre episode. Not matter how much you might not like them, Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig seem to be the only players able to submit ongoing characters that audiences enjoy (Vinny V., Vincent Price, Suze O., Penelope) and the others are only capable of one-ofs. SNL succeeds when there a a handful of players with ongoing characters. Bobby Moynihan shines with small characters but has tanked in prominent roles.
JASON SEGEL NEEDS TO HOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really like Barrymore but I think she was aware what a bad show this was and her usual charm (ymmv) didn’t come through at all. SNL is so bad I absolutely cannot watch for more than a few minutes. Although I am curious as to next weeks show with Geraud (sp?). He was on Ferguson’s show Friday and was vulgarly hilarious.
Exactly. She should have said no to some of those horrid skits (Gilly I am talking to you). But wow, did she look gorgeous in the opening monoloque. Can I have that dress please?
What is ‘ymmv’?
Just for the record: a trooper is someone who troops. A trouper is an actor in a travelling show.
I just take offense at your Regina Spektor comment. Obviously, you’ve not listened to a lot of her music. She has more than a nice voice– she is an amazing songwriter and pianist as well. I think you might be a little bit too old to be doing this…
agreed!
she was terrible. that was the most awful thing i’ve seen since Ashley Simpson lip synched her song. Spector was either really nervous or just can’t sing live. Doesn’t matter how good you are on your album, if you can’t sing live – you’re talent means nothing.
It doesn’t mean nothing. It just means don’t sign up for a show like this. I don’t know how good she is on her albums, but she was channel changing awful last night.
she was nervous. usually, spektor can knock your socks off performing live (just check out some performances on youtube!). she’s most often stellar on TV performances, too, but every now and then her nervousness reveals itself in her voice (this was her first SNL gig). not to mention the fact that her first song, “Eet,” is not one that rolls off the vocal cords…
it’s too bad that so many people were introduced to regina through this performance. check her out. she has 5 beautiful albums and several live collections (including one that was just released this past week). any hardcore regina fan will agree with me!
I am only commenting on last night. Baaaaaaddddddddddddd
I’m a pretty devoted Regina Spektor fan. I watched the performances and I would have to agree. She sounded nice, but you could tell she was a bit nervous, especially during “Eet.” Her voice was slightly shaky, something that doesn’t usually characterize her live performances. “The Calculation” came much closer to capturing Regina’s essence, though–the vocals were much more on-point, and Regina also seemed much more relaxed. Hopefully those who aren’t familiar with her see past the nerves, since she really is an incredible artist and her originality is electrifying, and her songs are amazing.
This page is very accurate. In my view of SNL, it seems like each week is just going down hill from the previous week. I dont laugh as hard as I used to and it makes me disappointed because the writers of the scripts dont make them very funny anymore. Well done on the page.
