The Emmy Awards this weekend: What show do you think should win as Best Drama?

Mad-Men_dl

The Emmy Awards are on Sunday, so I’m continuing this daily who should win/who will win prediction discussion.

I began yesterday with the Best Comedy category, so today I ask:

Who will win among these nominees, and who do you think should win?

The nominees are: Big Love, Breaking Bad, Damages, Dexter, House, Lost, Mad Men.

Me, I think Mad Men will win the Emmy Award: Although it’s relatively new (Emmy voters are notoriously skittish about heaping multiple awards on shows that haven’t been around for a while), Mad Men is a classy show that voters can feel comfortable getting behind. It’s got both respect and media buzz.

As for what should win? I think both Breaking Bad and Dexter are fully as good as Mad Men, and deserve an Emmy. And oh yeah: Lost had a pretty great season, didn’t it? If I had to narrow it to one pick (which I do), I’ll say: Breaking Bad should win.

What about you? What drama do you think will win, and which one should win?

I think that Mad Men will probably win, and it’s a very good show. But Lost is the BEST show on television, and it’s going to be gone forever soon… so let’s honor it now!

I think Lost’s best chances are next year for its final season. That’s when voters will want to really honor the show.

BIG LOVE!!! is awesomeeee .. they deserve to win this year

  • paige

Mad Men won last years Emmy for Best drama… I’m rooting for Dexter or Lost or Big Love but wont be pissed if none of the others win (unless its House)

  • Eric P.

Big Love never gets the respect it deserves! It’s a great show and should be rewarded.

  • J

Your reasons for Mad Men winning are way off. It’s not relatively new, and voters are not notoriously skittish about voting for “new shows.” The show won last year, has 16 nominations, buzz through the roof, and submitted the best episodes. I’ll be shocked if anything else won.

Lost. It was an amazing year for the show. If not Lost then Dexter.

  • Caroline

House! It should have won many times over already!

  • Shane

LOST please. That show has never been better, and if Emmy voters cant award Elizabeth Mitchell for her fabulous performance as Juliet, than at least award the show for a fantastic season!

  • Abby

    Lost.

  • Ayesha

    LOST!!!!

Mad Men all the way! I watch every episode multiple times and I’ve watched the entire season 2 again on dvd and the arcs and themes are so tight, so fantastic, the performances so incredible that the casting seems to be an act of prescience, the production design so sumptuous, the flashbacks so staggering and crucial … well, you get the idea … it’s unparalleled. With that said, I *also* loved Breaking Bad and wouldn’t mind it getting Best Drama since MM has already won it; the acceleration of the pace, the escalation of stakes and conflict… a thing of beauty. If nothing else, the writing feat of finding unique and surprising ways for a protagonist to maintain a double life — over and over, without lapsing into self-parody — is deserving of reward. That’s REALLY tough to write. But…is that a greater feat than writing a period drama that weaves meticulously researched historical events into a fascinating and unique dramatic landscape with undeniably compelling characters? Hmmm… ;-)

Will Win: Bland Men, I mean Mad Men.
    Should Win: Lost or Dexter
Could Win: No one other than Mad Men.

  • Kevin

I think that Damages should have one for its first season, but it was off its game for this second season… Its Mad Men all the way…

  • Brandon

Lost is still my favorite show overall, but Breaking Bad had the best season of any of the other shows listed.

  • Palais

My vote is for Breaking Bad. But it’ll be Mad Men.

  • Nathan

Big Love had the best season of all the nominated shows, but I don’t see it having much of a shot.

Troy, you’re on thin ice for that “Bland Men” crack! And question for you guys…I haven’t seen Dexter…should I move it up to the top on my Netflix list NOW? The other choices for that slot are “The Baxter,” “Generation Kill,” “Amadeus” and “High Noon.” I suppose I could get in some Dexter before the Emmys broadcast. You tell me.

And here’s my Mad Men love, I’m having a blast playing with screencaps for each week’s episode this season…

Probably too late to respond to this, but YES move Dexter to the top of your Netflix Queue! My wife and I streamed the first 2 seasons through Netflix and caught up on season 3 this summer and are HOOKED! Great show! my opinion though for Emmy? LOST But agree that if it has any chance, season 6 will be when it will get the award (although it did already win for season 1).

  • jeremy dc

The Shield was the best drama from last year and they’re not even nominated so I say to hell with the emmy’s. Of the ones nominated though, Mad Men is my favorite.

  • orville

I love Big Love, but I thought it had an off season last year (despite some incredible work by all three main actresses).

Mad Men will probably win. It has good momentum and is currently airing new episodes (though I’m not sure when the deadline for ballots was). But Breaking Bad deserves to win in my opinion. Who knows? Brian Cranston pulled an upset last year–maybe the show will this year.

  • Matt

Early years of shows typically win more Emmy awards that later years, for example NYPD Blue, ER, The West Wing, Frasier, Will & Grace, among others.

  • Stella

I think Mad Men will win. I enjoy the show a great deal. However, I think Breaking Bad should get the Emmy. S2 was top notch.

  • dave

Of course I want Lost to win. It’s my favorite show of the bunch, and one of my favorite shows of all time. But, I’ll be fair. The rest of these shows are great too. I don’t think House or Damages will pull off a win. Mad Men is really on a roll, and Ken is right: it’s a classy show that Emmy voters would love to get behind. But Breaking Bad has the best shot at pulling off a surprise win (thanks to its fantastic second season), just as Brian Cranston did last year. As for Lost, Dexter, or Big Love, there is a slight chance, but I wouldn’t put money on it. I think Lost will get the award next year, after its sure-to-be-brilliant final season.
Will Win and Should Win: Mad Men
    Could Win: Breaking Bad
Should have been nominated: The Shield

  • CK

Should win: LOST Probably a little to “out there” for EMMY voters, though.
    Will win: Mad Men

  • Brigitte

I am in full agreeance that Breaking Bad *should* win, but am fairly sure that, as you said, the Emmy will go to Mad Men.

  • razzaq

    want to win : LOST/DEXTER

  • Kurt

Shoot, forget about this year’s Emmy, “True Blood” better have locked up next year’s with the amazing season it just finished.

  • Rachel K

I’m going to pull a crazy and say House will win but I think Lost or Dexter should take the Emmy.

  • S.K.

LOST! This had to be their best season so far.

  • JoAnne

I can only comment on the couple shows I watch: Damages and Lost. Lost is deserving; Damages was uneven this season–nowhere near as good as Season 1. But let’s face it. Friday Night Lights should be on this list of nominees.

  • wendyk

LOST. Fo sho. Each season gets better and better – with the exception of season 1 vs. season 2. Boo on the Tailies.
