I love all the characters. S2 is much better, but the Maryann plot has really gone over board…don’t kill anyone off.All the characters have an interacting story line that should be further developed..More Bill, Sookie, Eric and Pam…Andy and Jason are the hoot……
I loved when Eric pointed out what so many on the boards have stated… that Bill fed Sookie his blood the first night – thus increasing her attraction to him and their bond. He can’t criticize Eric when he’s done the same thing!
Actually, Bill didn’t do the same thing. If you go back and watch the first episode, Sookie has a dream about Bill on the night *she* rescues *him* from the Rattrays, which is the night they meet. She doesn’t drink Bill’s blood until the next night, after he saves her life. So she was already dreaming about Bill before she had his blood, which indicates she had an honest connection with him first. Also, Bill was saving her life. Regardless of why he might have been in Bon Temps, what he did was to her benefit, not just then, but on several occasions since then: when Malcolm & posse invaded Merlotte’s, when Sookie got scratched by Maryann, when Bill came to her rescue at the airport, and at the fellowship. Bill does everything he can to protect Sookie, even to his detriment. Aside from protecting her from the bomb, Eric has done nothing but put Sookie in harm’s way. He even stood and watched Longshadow strangle her while Bill saved her life, even though she was only there because he demanded her presence. And Eric tricked her into something he knew she wouldn’t have wanted to do if he’d told her the truth.
And I have a feeling Bill waited until Sookie was injured enough so that she would take his blood. He had to have been waiting outside the whole time, but he showed up way too late. Suspicious!
Great episode. Some thoughts:
1. I can think of at least three Emmy nods this should get in acting next year — Paquin, Forbes and Skarsgard. Possibly more.
2. Jason and Andy made a hilarious duo, and Jason’s egg comment had my dad and me laughing.
3. Evan Rachel Wood did really well. I get the impression that Sophie-Anne’s not a total nutter, but she acts like one to see how much she can get away with.
4. Loved the Fangtasia scene with Eric, Sam, Pam and the kids.
5. Skarsgard was on screen for, what, maybe 5-7 minutes total, and yet he stole the entire thing.
6. My theory on the egg. The egg is a pagan symbol of rebirth and revitalization (hence why Christians borrowed it to symbolize Easter, the Resurrection). It could mean any number of things related to Maryann’s plans (i.e. when Dionysus arrives, she’ll be reborn and/or enter another plane of existence). Make no mistake, Tara and Eggs had the egg because she wanted them to. It all has a purpose.
the best point made so far on the egg theory
What about the boy that was facinated with vampires? He was great. Funniest moment: Eric in a dress. Scary moment: When Lafayette turned
YES!! Totally agree Lafayette turning was scariest moment.
That classic Yahtzee set was purdy.
Evan Rachel Wood was awful. She seemed to lack maturity in regards to the subject matter by playing her scenes in a way that yelled out “LOOK HOW SUBVERSIVE I AM!!! LOOOOOOK!!!!”
So far, the show has miraculously been able to avoid this tone for the most part, and it’s an important thing given the subject matter of the show. The actors are mostly good enough however to play their roles within their characters’ world. EWR was not up to the task though, and played what should have been a great role given her intro and “status” on the show, in a very self conscious way. Alan Ball, if you can replace her, please do so…and quick.
Agreed, 100%.
I completely agree. She’s a lightweight. Very weak debut! The Maryann storyline is tired, and I’m over it, but you have to admit, she has been an interesting character. I’m already over the Queen, and she’s just been introduced… That’s a bad sign! ERW may have talent, but she’s in over her head. Compare her debut on TB to that of Forbes as Maryann. No comparison. All these little subplots are fun (I LOVED all the Fellowship of the Sun action), but TB is still really all about Sookie, Bill, and Eric!
I love this show, but I also agree … my first and strong impression was that Evan Rachel Wood was overacting. They can’t replace her with another actress now, but I hope she either changes her portrayal of the queen or they diminish her role.
I couldent agree more. I never thought ERW was a good actress and now I am positive she isn’t. I have no idea who she was or what she was doing or why. She was just spewing out words with no meaning. I don’t even think she knew what the hell she was saying. She made her character seem annoying and dumb. And just because she lowered her voice for one word at the end of a sentence did not give me the feeling she is really smarter than she seems it made me feel like wow this actress is really more idiotic than I thought. Maryanne, Michelle Forbes, Now that is a real actress!!!
Wasn’t Queen Sophie turned when she was just a teen? I would think it would be hard of her to come out strong when she’s so young in her mind… just saying. I dug her.
Ugh. I agree EVW was AWFUL… Squirm inducing bad.
Yeah, I didn’t really like her, either. She contacted AB looking for the role, not the other way around. AB should’ve cast Mena Suvari instead. He used her on Six Feet Under, and she was great (and a lesbian, too!), and she wouldn’t have been so flat and cliche. Dating MM you would think ERW would have had the capacity to play a more dimensional vampire (just a joke). But d a m n didn’t she look great in her costumes?
Evan Rachel Wood was genius! I don’t know what you’re talking about. She did a brilliant job of bring Sophie Ann to life. I loved her!
She is a terrible actress.
Awful, awful, awful. She didn’t have the self-confidence or maturity to play the role. And she’s just not a very strong actress. I think she peaked in “Thirteen.”
Agreed. I cringing every time ERW forced a line out.
She sounded kind of like a robot. Very disappointing as I think she is a great actor.
Since I love the show so I’m going to remain positive. I heard the queen is supposed to be quite insane. I’m open to the idea her acting was intentional and for the best of the character.
the queen is not supposed to be insane at all. She is supposed to smart, deviuos, strong, and a survivor. Also despite her young appearance she is supposed to come off as sophisticated and elegant. Not sure this version is going to protray any of that. Oh and heres the book word again ( after all thats where the ideas are starting from) she is also the mastermind behind Sookie/Bill.
totally agree-she was terrible-
trying too hard-her scenes slowed
down the whole episode-I’m suprised
more people didn’t like her
I was not impressed at all! Over-acting!
ditto
I’m not an expert at acting, so I’m not going to throw out words like “over acting”, but the “immaturity” some people are citing…I thought that was done on purpose. Sophie-Ann was young when she was turned – maybe she doesn’t look 16 or whatever by our standards, but there was still an air of youth and impertinence in her manner. Also, Sophie-Ann is a very, very powerful vamp. Sure she can flaunt it and not give a hoot what the other person in the room thinks. She’s the Queen of Louisiana. I liked her portrayal. It’s different that what I had imagined in my mind, sure, but I still think it was a good job.
It was not the character, it was her bad acting.
Exactly – she is privilged and feels that she is entitled – she played it perfectly.
She looked great…although wayyyy too much make-up. The character was a disappointment and her acting seemed flat and a let down to me. Maybe in the finale she will be better. I wonder what her power is that makes her The Queen, besides her age.
I agree. I think she acts all immature and carefree on purpose so people don’t know what to expect, but I think on the finale we will see the more serious side of her when she’s talking to Eric.
Hmmm, we all watched the same episode, right? I found this week’s TB to be a huge letdown. Poorly written, poorly acted (certainly on the part of ERW who played Sophie-Ann as would a junior in high school), poorly paced. Eric/Askar’s short time on screen was perhaps the only highlight, but that’s not saying much in an episode which blatantly exposed how ridiculous (and not always in a good way, especially tonight) this show really is. How typical that cheap thrills (of the schlock and not shock variety) bring in the ratings. I recognize the goal here is not to be profound but to entertain, but honestly- did anyone actually find this ep entertaining?
I totally agree. TB is getting more and more campy and ridiculous with each episode. But yet it’s more popular than ever (?????)
I wish Bill was taller.
lol… But I LOVE Bill! He’s certainly tall enough and sooooo adorable! He works that “Southern Gentleman” accent and holds his own against Eric. That’s tough to do with a taller, blonder actor. Moyer plays Bill as worldly, charming, polished, and refined. Yummy!
Touchee……
Shoemia – very good point. I have a big soft spot for Billy
He’s 5’10. Good enough for me.
5’10 is what actors say when they’re really 5’8.
Well going from his pics standing next to his lady and the other dudes he looks fine. So piss off.
Right on. He looks like a pip squeak.
What I don’t get is he’s 5″10 but Eric (or the actor who plays him) is 6″4 yet he towers over Bill.
From the first time any of us laid eyes on Eric it was clear he was VERY tall, and it makes even more sense that the actor is not from this country, old viking blood probably
so there’s no point in dissing the other guys on the show who are of average or even above height. plus, aren’t actors always short or the actress’ all in heels to match each other better?
He probably is 5’10″. Alexander Skarsgard is like 6’7″
As long as Eric stays alive I’m good.
evan rachel wood was horrible. i actually thought she was a good actress until tonight – and i don’t think its a case of “oh let’s play a bad actress”…it really was awful. i cringed.
He’s “alive” in all the books, but who knows what will happen on the show. lol. But I think it will take someone pretty strong to stake Eric. He’s so badass.
Sam cant die. I think AB said that two vampires die through out the whole season. Two important vampires* And that would be Godric and Stan-I assume.
WTF was up with that egg??? Anybody? As usual, Eric steals the ep! That dress was just hil-arious!!!!! I agree Julienne, Lafayette turning was scary! But MaryAnn was funny, “You cook, don’t you?” (or something like that). Overall, great ep. Keep up the good work AB.
Oh yeah, what was up with ERW? Was she a little nutty or what?
OMG!!! ERW was fabulous. I’m a totally straight woman who just turned into a lesbian for several minutes there! If I were her (or with her) I’d want to see Bill with another man, too. Actually I wouldn’t mind a glimpse into some of Lafayette’s sexy dreams about Eric! Whoa, what an amazing episode.
i thought ERW was great too. people are complaining how she acts nutty but if i had lived as long as the queen had i’d act that way too!
Greatest moment tonight… Eric flying!
Evan Rachel Wood is my favorite character in the entire series thus far. She was just perfectly what I expected from last week’s trailer. I enjoyed the most that her fangs are really different and that she has so much power she has to dismiss Bill before he can go.
