New 'True Blood': Sookie bites Eric, and 'I'm full of joy, I want to burn!'

Beginning with a bang and ending in a whimper, this week’s True Blood turned out to be one of the more delicate, nuanced episodes of Read the full post.

Another great ep!!! For sure. Eric is sooo hot. He is definitely the character to watch next season. As far as MaryAnn, it is time to go!! Lafayette to the rescue!! But can MaryAnn be killed?

  • Penny

Enjoyed the episode — especially the Sookie/Eric bits — but am also ready to see the end of Maryanne. That storyline doesn’t draw me in at all (it isn’t in the books, either). I would have been happier with more Godric. Looking forward to next ep!

    • Dawnie

It *IS* in the books, just not this drawn out & different in many ways. Her relationship with Sam, what she wants from Bon Temps (more specific wants), why she scratches sookie, how long she stays & what she does while there, what causes her to leave, etc. Once again, Alan Ball’s changing the story in an attempt to make things “juicier” only served to worsen the show… Stick with the books AB! They’re popular for a reason!

However, I will say that his changes specific to Godric’s storyline were good & were implemented well… Making Godric Eric’s maker and having him want to meet the sun for different reasons (vs the book), instantly made him a character we could both love & relate to… The final scenes with Eric, Sookie, & Godric will go down in TV history as one of the most touching, memorable, and well acted scenes this decade. (To the person that complained Godric’s storyline was too short lived, that’s always how it meant to be… read the books). This episode was truly fantastic & could possibly be a turning point for this show.

I really hope the writers read the viewers comments & learn from their mistakes cause it seems to me everyone is sick of the MaryAnn story line. I can’t help but wonder if they actually showed these episodes to a test audience beforehand… seems doubtful, as I’m sure they’d also have complained this plot-point drug on waaay too long. It went from intriguing to irritating.

Can’t wait to see the final 3 eps! I read in a review that 3 major vamps will die this season — Godric’s one… (Does Stan & the other one count as 2? They weren’t really major). I have my theories on the other 2, but who really knows at this point. Adding the queen should make things interesting.

      • Sliemer

Yeah, they are popular because of True Blood, thats it, lol

      • Julie

I agree with you in regards to Godric and the books. I picked up the books AFTER the True Blood episode where Bill/Sookie/Eric go to Dallas. I read the entire series in a weekend.

Godric’s change on the show will help show Eric’s “humanity” in a way that we really didn’t see in the books until a little later.

The MaryAnn subplot on the show is getting very old very quickly for me. I was rather shocked at the storyline in the book because it was over and done with in a seemingly blink of the eye.

Tara…as a character…is far more likable in the show than the book. And more pivotal. I just hope she gets it together because she’s rapidly becoming my least favorite.

I like the subtle changes in the storyline that the show is making. Though…and heaven help me…I don’t want them to rush Sookie/Eric. While Bill is an absolute tool in the books…I don’t want the show runners to simply throw Sookie/Eric together only to make Bill the hero. Because THAT would be a turnoff to me.

Team Eric…age has its priveleges. :)

Your comment is rather self-contradictory. You say stick with the books (whether it worked in the books or not), and the you go on to praise some of the original things that the writing staff have done. Confused?

      • Melaine

My guess for one of the other vampires that “bites it” this season would be Lorena.

      • um..

speak for yourself…I enjoy the MaryAnne storyline. It’s become the center of the Horror factor for the show. When things get scary, the show gets better.

  • Liz86000

Ok, so yeah, the scene between Eric & Godric was touching, but Eric is STILL an assh*le! Sookie is Bill’s! NOT Eric’s!

    • Michelle

Actually, Sookie is a grown woman who can make her own mind about who she wants. Right now she still wants Bill. Why I have NO idea, but she does. That doesn’t preclude her from changing her mind.

      • Marchare

You have no idea why! He’s her first. He has treated her like princess except when she has done something worth making him angry such as taking Jessica home. He is trying hard to mainstream. Eric is not. Bill loves her. But in the end, unless someone changes her to vampire, she will not be with either of them. She will be with Sam.

    • Amy Leigh

Seriously? I didn’t realize Bill owned Sookie. Bill looked petty and ridiculous last night when there were more important things going on. He’s way too possessive and just needs to go away. Will he let Sookie go ANYWHERE by herself? Bill = Epic fail.

    • Ashely

Sookie is not a possession, even though bill treats her like one. Bill has slowly become increasingly annoying and had lost all his edge from the 1st season. Sookie can decide who she wants, and just because she wants bill now doesnt mean she will later. Also, just because Bill looks all good now doesnt mean the writers are going to continue that. Seriously, are there actually people who want Sookie and Bill together for all the seasons?! come on shes gonna have other love interests, otherwise it would get mind numbingly boring.

      • onlymystory

And there is the difference between Sookie Stackhouse and Bella Swann. Sookie chooses who she’s with and if she is mad at Bill she doesn’t hang out with him!
As opposed to Bella who despite being furious with Edward forgoes that for the chance to make out? Give me True Blood and strong female characters any day.

    • inlovewithBIllCompton

Yes, I was starting to like Eric…just a little..and then he goes and does that to Sookie and Bill.. Darn HIM

  • yukoner2

Best Line: Hoyt’s Mama to Hoyt:

” I simply object to a girlfriend who will kill you and eat you… I think that is reasonable”

    HILARIOUS!

The final scene was great as was Sookie’s dream. Eric is so cool. That smug look on his face when Bill approached them after Sookie sucked out the silver was great.

  • Virginia Weinstein

The last scene was the best one I’ve ever seen in my life. The acting was superb, the writing was perfect, and I was moved inside in ways I still don’t understand. Bravo True Blood!!! By the way: you are right.

    • Lina

Actually, the best final scene of all time was the final scene of 6 feet under

      • Ali

Lina: I agree. The ending the SFU was superb.
But the ending to this episode was nearly as great. It must be something in the water on the sets of Alan Ball’s shows.

  • Natasha

This episode was more fantastic than words can describe and it managed to make me feel an entire range of emotions for the hour. The Eric/Sookie parts were definetly the best part and I for can’t wait for more steamy scenes between them! The ending was so heart wrenchingly sad and I was crying so much at what was a beautifully acted out scene.
True Blood is definetly one of the best shows ever to have been created!

  • beckham8

Seriously, as compared to the trashed from those four 4 networks, HBO should ship at least 23 eps of TRUE BLOOD from now on … 12 is NOT ENOUGH ..!!!!

    • DaisyL

I agree, but all of the premium cable shows are only 12 episodes, the most.

At the end of the episode, the first thing I said was ‘Only 3 more left, if’s going so fast!’

This is the only show we must watch (DH and I) as it airs and not DVR. I make sure I’m in my favorite chair and settled in to watch, without distractions. There’s a lot to be said for that since most shows are not as compelling.

    • Amy Leigh

Trust me. 12 is enough. One of my favorite tv shows of all time (Battlestar Galactica) began slipping a bit when they increased the episode order from 12 to 22. I would rather have less episodes and no filler than more episodes with filler.

  • Jen

Amazing episode. One of the best shows in years. I cannot believe there are only 3 more episodes left of this season…how on earth am I going to wait a whole year????

  • Alex

Thought it was interesting that in the Eric/Sookie dream sequence they were talking about what kind of vampire Sookie would make.
Hmmm…. And it was infinitely hawt, btw. Something we’ve been lacking since Bill became such a complete and utter bore.
I wasn’t much of a Sookie/Eric fan before, but Bill’s continuing blandness might just change my mind. He needs to get with it already!

  • Maiv

The second to last scene with Erik and Godric was really heartbreaking. Alexander S. did a great job.

  • Gina Clark

Love the show, love the books! Eric is the best! Bill boring! Maryann enough! And I am glad to see that Hoyt and Jason both finally grew a pair!!

  • isawakumo

    Godric’s end was simply perfect.

I’m looking forward to next episode, and the look on Eric/Bill/Sookie’s collective faces when they see Bon Temps in absolute tatters in the wake of Maryanne.

Eric is going to have to earn his Sherrif’s pay with more then just a glare and a few words…

    • ashlee

Isawakumo, I couldn’t agree with you more. It is going to be a doozy.

  • Carol

This was the best episode of the entire series for me. Outstanding s/l and acting by the actors, especially AS(Eric), AH(Godric) and AP(Sookie). TB has been slowing losing my interest but after last night, I can’t wait for more. Thank you Alan Ball for finally showing us that you do understand the character of Eric Northman. Yes, he’s manipulative (just like Bill and the other vampires), but he’s also loyal and capable of love. And thank you for making it abundantly clear that the love between Godric & Eric was not romantic at all (AB did state that in an interview but it was further reinforced this episode). I loved that the Eric & Sookie relationship has finally begun( loved the bullet-sucking and the dream sequence). That dream was hotter than any B/S scene and it was not just sexual. There was playfulness and pillow talk. So, so sweet and hot!! Bill can say Sookie is only attracted to Eric b/c of the blood but he has to say the same thing about himself. Sookie did drink a large amount of his blood the 2nd night they met. Also, Bill kept the info that Sookie would be attracted to the vamp she drank from. It’s nice to see that Bill is not the saint AB is trying to portray him as. Anyway, excellent episode and MORE ERIC!! One more thing, I agree about Maryanne-s/l that has gone from intriguing to boring. I also hope the writers take note. We want more screentime for the vampires and less of the other stuff.

  • Sliemer

Okay, so I have been a fan of this show since the beggining, and I had come to the conclusion that although a good show, it wasnt the type of show to tug at your emotions. Well, I was wrong!
WHen Hoyts mom mention that Jessica couldnt give him a baby and she ran away, it had to be the saddest tv moment since Izzy lost Denny on Grey’s anatomy.

  • Dorothy Dyer

Wonderful show and series. Great writing – you guys/gals can be proud of yourselves. I only hope you have a superbly gruesome end in store for Maryann – I hate that bitch!!
