The first terrific show of 2010? Timothy Olyphant's 'Lawman' looks like a possibility

I think I just may have seen one of the best shows of 2010: Lawman, a new FX series starring Timothy Olyphant.

I know that may seem a foolish claim to make based on a four-minute clip shown today at the Television Critics Association gathering in Los Angeles, but… man, this looked good, and consider the folks involved. Deadwood and Damages‘ Timothy Olyphant stars as a modern-day U.S. Marshal. The show is based on a character created by Elmore Leonard in a short story, “Fire in the Hole.”  The pilot was directed by Michael Dinner, who worked on the underrated Leonard-based series Karen Sisco. It’s produced by Graham Yost, who oversaw Boomtown and was a producer on Band Of Brothers.

And the first villain for Olyphant’s lawman to track down? The Shield‘s Walton Goggins.

I’m telling you, from Olyphant’s easy drawl to the laconic, very Elmore Leonardesque dialogue, this looked like a humdinger. Look for it in March on FX.

Any Tim Olyphant and/or Elmore Leonard fans out there?

Tim Olyphant was good enough, but Walton Goggins?? I’m already hooked. Is Goggins going to be a cast member or just a guest star? I’ll watch anything he does.

I am a big Tim Olyphant fan and I will watch whatever he is in. Does this mean he is done on Damages?

Love Olyphant ever since ‘Broken Heart Players Club’.

Elmore Leonard fan here. I was so sad that Karen Sisco died too young, but this looks pretty promising.

LOVE Tim Olyphant and loved Deadwood. Cannot wait for this show. So glad to hear it is as good as the pedigree suggests. PLEASE cover it when it premieres!!!! That’s a tough month to start out.

Very excited. Olyphant was awesome on Deadwood; Goggins was hilarious on The Shield; Leaonard is one the great pulp writers of all time. I definitely need something to take the place of the The Shield and that quagmire, Rescue Me.

Olyphant is great in “The Perfect Getaway”, which, for all it’s B-movieness, is a lot of fun. Glad I saw it after walking out of G.I. Joe.

Does anyone know if Timothy Olyphant will appear on Damages next season?

Yes! I love Olyphant! Looking forward to this.

I love Timothy Olyphant! I’m looking forward to his new show. I’m not typically a western show or movie person but with great writing, producing, acting, etc., any show is worth watching. Also, I’m curious if Olyphant is going to wrap up his story arc on Damages or will it be disappear or explained away on the show. I thought I read an article on the FX forum that he would wrap it up but this was before his pilot was picked up.

Tim Olyphant – underrated awesome, I’ve been a fan since “Go”

He did the sports report every morning on local radio station 103.1 here in LA and was so knowledgeable and funny. Too bad the station is gone now.

I loved Karen Sisco and Boomtown, and I’ve heard good things about the other shows mentioned, so I think I might actually have to try this show.

Can’t wait to see Walton Goggins again. Shame he wasn’t nominated for an Emmy as he is the best!
