The 200-plus members of the Television Critics Association celebrated its 25th anniversary of award-giving last week by handing them to shows including Battlestar Galactica (Program of the Year), True Blood (Outstanding New Program), and The Big Bang Theory (Outstanding Achievement in Comedy).
Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad won the TCA award for Individual Achievement in Drama, and Big Bang’s Jim Parsons won for the same in the Comedy category. Mad Men won the best drama award, and best kid’s show? Yo Gabba Gabba!
I must say, as a TCA member myself, the crits from around the country did themselves proud this year — no clunkers in that bunch. Plus, a “career achievement” award went to Betty White, and who doesn’t deserve an award more than Betty White? Makes me proud to be a TV critic.
Quote of the night goes to Chuck Lorre, the producer behind The Big Bang Theory, and veteran of many a sitcom. “I’d like to speak from the heart,” he began, then paused. “But my heart was killed 20 years ago on Roseanne.”
Congrats to all the winners.

FRAK YEAH! Go BSG!
OMG! I’m SOOOO happy for Jim Parsons and TBBT! Totally deserving. I just wish that TBBT had been Emmy-nominated. Ah well, at least Jim was … and hopefully this is a step towards him winning that prize too.
Thank God they have more sense than the Emmys do.
I just wished they gave a different set of awards for female and male performers
I love Chuck Lorre’s vanity cards at the end of his sitcoms.
Finally! An awards show that got it right!
At least this acknowledged The Shield! But who won the Heritage Award?
Jim Parsons…for the win.
Yes, Yes, Yes! Must-watch TV for this olde lady.
Well, since usually only one woman is nommed in each acting category, we know who the critics think is the best comedic actress & best dramatic actress: Tina Fey & Glenn Close.
ER won Heritage.
You have got to be KIDDING ME! Only one woman was nominated for each category!!
WOW! And people say we live in an equal society. That’s ignorant, flagrant sexism. How embarassing for the TCA. I don’t know how proud I would be to be part of that association Ken.
I think one also has to ask–how many women are in this critics’ association to begin with, because that would probably explain a lot.
you guys missed one… FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!
Yay! Television awards that aren’t total crap!
True Blood, Cranston, Parsons – nicely done TCA! (The Emmys are a complete joke – 10 bucks says they give Boston Legal more awards this year. Yawn.)
Awesome news that BSG won an award. Fraktacular! What an amazing show? Also excited about Mad Men and Jim Parson’s winning.
I think the whole anti-woman thing at the TCA’s is quite disturbing. Glenn Close being the only female for Individual Achievement In Drama is a sad thing.
Of course critics have taste. They actually watch the shows. I think more women should be honored too.
They should televise the Critics Assocation awards and nevermind the Emmys. It’s ridiculous BG, True Blood and Big Bang Theory didn’t even get an Emmy nomination.
That’s good. Screw the Emmys. And I love the nominations for this one. Though Lost should’ve edged out Mad Men in Outstanding Achievement in Drama.
I’m sorry, the only way you could pick BSG as the series of the year is if you didn’t actually watch BSG this last year. Lackluster, pretentious, overblown, unsatisfying end to what was once a good show. “Mad Men,” “Lost” and many others should’ve been in line before this one. About half the dramas on TV, actually.
Battlestar Galactica is hands down the best television show on all levels. Anyone who does not agree is simply wrong.
This goes to prove what I’ve said for years,THE CRITICS ARE IDIOTS!!!!!! TV has gotten so bad these days that shows that wouldn’t have lasted 13 weeks in the good old days are being awarded. THANK GOD for USA and BBC America, they have the only quality shows on today!!!!!!
So very happy for Battlestar Galactica winning Program of the year. While there are some who think the fourth season was its least fulfilling, I would say that in a broader mind one can see its brilliance. Either way this show has deserved this recognition from the very start so cheers to them!
Congrats to ER and Betty White as well. Who doesn’t love Betty White?!
Frak the Emmy’s!
Finally awards that get it right! BSG had been the best show on since the first season, its about time they were recognized.
It looks like the critics are much better than the Emmy’s this year. BSG had a fantastic ending and the best show on television.
So awesome! Don’t quite see the Big Bang award (I tried to watch — bored to tears — and hate the format, either canned laughter or live audience), but BSG was long overdue for a major award. I always wonder how voters for the Emmys would have voted if the nominating committee would have let it on the ballot.
So say we all.
YEAH BSG!!! it is about time.
I don’t quite get all the ruckus about BSG (and I am a Sci Fi fan), but glad something different won. I am ecstatic about the Big Bang Theory and Jim Parsons–some of the funniest TV I have seen since “Father Ted”.
Not good enough taste… TCA never gave ‘The Wire’ the award for best drama in the five years it was on the air even though it was one of the most critically-acclaimed series of all time. So, yes, they’re better than the Emmys, but not much.
The Big Bang Theory, The Closer, Craig Ferguson, True Lies, Bad Girls are my must-see TV. I will watch anything with Betty White. I’m not a recognized demographic.
