Dig beneath the top tier of Emmy nominations, and a few surprises await you. For example, Justin Timberlake could snag an Emmy for his hosting of Saturday Night Live, and for writing “Motherlover” in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category.
And Tina Fey’s SNL version of Sarah Palin is nominated in the Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series category. (Does this mean Palin, with more time on her hands now, might attend the Emmys on Sept. 20 to bask in reflected glory?)
And lo and behold, everyone’s favorite musical, the Joss Whedon-created Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog, was nominated in the (deep breath, now) Outstanding Special Class Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Programs category.
Meanwhile, actors who were shut out of nominations they deserved in the Best Actress in a Drama category received recognition in other categories: Big Love‘s Jeanne Tripplehorn was nominated for her portrayal of Jackie Onassis in the HBO movie Grey Gardens, while CCH Pounder, woefully left out for her work on The Shield, was nominated for a guest role in HBO’s The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.
Any other odd or unusual Emmy nominations you’ve noticed?

Also, Justin Timberlake was nominated for writing Motherlover. I thought that the Sarah Palin nod for Tina Fey was to make up for not nominating her in the writing category (which is funny because 30 Rock have all the writing nods except for one in that category)
Vote Tina Fey, Emmys! It’s what a maverick would do.
Is Tina Fey nominated in a writing category as well? Because I’d love to see her score a hat trick – she gives the best acceptance speeches.
Kudos to you! I hadn’t touhght of that!
Tina Fey should definitely get the award for her Sarah Palin impersonations. I can’t remember a time when SNL was so buzzed about than the 2008 elections. And to think she wasn’t even a cast member anymore! Oh, and may I add, Maverick.
I can’t believe The Simpsons has never been nominated for Comedy Series, but Fammily Guy now has? What is THAT? The Emmys remain the most laughable and idiotic award handed out in the entertainment biz.
Battlestar Galactica’s webisodes, Face of the Enemy, also got a nom with Dr. Horrible in the Special Program category! And Jon Hamm got 2 noms, one for Best Actor Drama and one for his guest spot on 30 Rock.
i agree Kaky- the fact that Family Guy has done something The Simpsons never could is pathetic.
Motherlover should win. Pure gold! And by the way, even if you don’t like it, you have to give props to Family Guy for doing what The simpsons tried but never could do.

Kudos to you! I hadn’t touhgth of that!
Dr. Horrible was absolutely fabulous! Although I already liked Neil Patrick Harris, this just sealed the deal for me! Refreshing and original!
I think I’m the only person who doesn’t like 30 Rock. I’m a Tina Fey fan, but cannot stand that show. The Office ALL THE WAY!!
Thnska alot – your answer solved all my problems after several days struggling
Here’s hoping Justin sweeps his categories, hilarious and deserves to be recognized.
@Adam:
regarding The Simpsons, animated programs can submit to either the comedy series category, or the animated category. The Simpsons only tried 2 times back in the 90′s to submit to the comedy series category, and were snubbed, so since then they only submit to the animated and have been nominated in that category every year. Still cool to see any animated show in the comedy series category, but Family Guy were not competing against The Simpsons.
I’m a big Joss Whedon fan, but how the heck can Dr. Horrible be Emmy nominated when it has nothing to do with television whatsoever? Are the Emmys free to nominate any web video they choose in these categories, regardless of how nonsensical it is?
I like that 4 out of the 5 Drama Writing nominees are (appropriately) Mad Men scripts. Matt Weiner got 4 nominations in ONE CATEGORY. Also, 4 of the 5 Comedy Writing nominees are from 30 Rock, which I’m happy about, too.
Also, love that Sarah Silverman got recognized for her totally vanity-free send-up of herself on The Sarah Silverman Program.
Also, how in the world was Jimmy Smitts nominated for Guest Actor when he was prominently in every episode of the third season of Dexter?
