I pretty much love Nurse Jackie; I’m already rooting for Edie Falco to get an Emmy next year. And I enjoyed this week’s second episode, especially the subplot about the violent patient who punched Jackie (“This happens,” was her simple yet eloquent response), yet to whom Jackie showed compassion and helped.
Having seen a few more episodes beyond this week’s, I know how much you’re going to enjoy Nurse Jackie as it proceeds. But this week’s episode, entitled “Sweet-N-All,” revealed the series’ one weak spot: the cartoonishly written role the terrific Anna Deavere Smith has to tackle as hospital administrator Mrs. Akalitus. That whole Akalitus-drinks-Jackie’s-percocet-spiked-coffee scene, that was pretty predictable and corny, didn’t you think?
But if that’s the only complaint I can come up with, this is a pretty darn good show, right? And next week, Eli Wallach guest stars as a patient in a super-fine episode.

as someone who has taken percocet (for pain, for pain, I swear!) – people don’t react the way Anne Deveare Smith acted – I agree, it was a weak spot in the evening – I was half expecting a laugh track when her face was pressed up against the window….how it should have been written, and performed: she starts to sweat – look nauseas and eventually ask Nurse Jackie that she should lay off the sweet n all because those chemicals can’t be good for you.
Yes, that storyline with Anna Devere Smith was too broad for a show which is built around subtle, insightful and biting comedy, but they’re still working out the kinks. Beyond that, NJ is my favorite new show,what an original, refreshing show. As for the hew and cry that “nurses don’t really do that!!!” my friends in nursing absolutely LOVE the show and do not feel it is a “smear” on their profession – quite the opposite! I have already enjoyed Ep. 3 On Demand and can tell you it’s just as good as the first two.
Are there not going to be any Weeds TV Watches anymore? HUGE bummer.
I really love this show! Up until last week, I was most excited about the return of “Weeds,” which has turned out to be dour and slow this season. Thank goodness for the arrival of “Nurse Jackie” on the scene! Edie Falco is so brilliant, and I really like how troubling, complex and compelling Nurse Jackie’s actions are, yet the series is not sad or dour (unlike the aforementioned pot show that has totally underwhelmed me so far this season).
I love Nurse Jackie. I already saw episode three on Charter on demand and it is goooooood. She is a saint.
I think Edie is great, but I don;t know if she is good enough for the Emmy. I’m still pulling for Jill Scott. I thought she was AWESOME in The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.

Yes, the boss running around drugged was predictable, but it reminded me how funny Anna Devere Smith is, a woman who should have had her own show years ago. This show and Jill Scott’s show are two of the strongest shows this season and guys should not think these are girlie shows. That ear scene in the toilet would fit in on The Shield just fine.
It’s good to see Edie Falco back on TV. I enjoyed these episodes, with the exception of her having a lover on the side. I just don’t think that was necessary here, but hey, I’m not a writer!!
I think Nurse Jackie is great, but I think Falco has tough competition for an Emmy from fellow Showtime show United States of Tara. Toni Collette is great on that show.

I had surgery last week and was prescribed percocet to manage the (considerable) pain during recovery. This morning I tried grinding up two tabs to see if it enhanced the effect, as Edie Falco’s character warns in the voiceover and Anna Deavere Smith’s character plays for laughs. No effect whatsoever.
Great show, great actress! Can’t wait until next week.
I just love Nurse Jackie; Edie Falco is brilliant in it! I was hooked from the first episode. This is absolutely great TV.
I watched the first episode of Nurse Jackie, but was upset by her portrayal of an RN. She forged a dead man’s signature so it looked like he donated his organs and she flushed a severed ear of a repulsive patient down the toilet. I’m sure this probably makes for good drama and comedy, but it’s not realistic. She would have been fired from her job and lost her license to practice for any number of things she did during the first show, including taking illicit drugs and having sex in the pharmacy. I’ve been a nurse for 40 years and am an advanced practice nurse now. Hard decisions are made daily in the medical field, but these decisions need to be ethical and in the best interest of the patient. HawthoRNe is a better show–more realistic and represents nurses in a positive light. Christina Hawthorne cares about her patients also and sometimes bends the rules. But those situations are addressed. It reminds me a little of the original ER show years. Shows like House and Nurse Jackie where the main characters are free to do whatever they want without consequences are poor representations of the medical field. And I’m not sure how Seattle Grace Hospital functions on Grey’s Anatomy without any nurses, except the occasional sexual encounter one would have with Alex. So how about some positive critical buzz about Hawthorne?
