Hmmm. A certain theme is emerging on The Late Show with David Letterman. Earlier this week, Howard Stern went on a tear about how Letterman was “the host we want to watch” in late-night.
Then last night, Julia Roberts said, after a particuarly good Letterman ad-lib, “You are so much funnier than other people who talk at this time of the evening.” Check it out:
Julia is a Dave loyalist, to be sure, and her comment could not be more pointed about the new Dave vs. Conan late-night competition. Last night on The Tonight Show, the scheduled Norm MacDonald seemed to have been bumped for a bigger star, Eddie Murphy. Are the booking wars heating up?
(By the way, Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal were great last night on Conan.)
Did you watch Julia Roberts on Letterman? What did you think?
UPDATE: Last night’s ratings are in, and Dave beat Conan last night for the first time in household ratings since O’Brien took over The Tonight Show.
For more on the late-night wars:

There’s nothing wrong with Robert’s being loyal to Dave. Obviously they have a playful report that has worked out well over her many visits.
But it seems classless to me to take a shot against Conan in this way. I suppose it should be expected. Roberts has become increasingly bitter and more difficult to watch as the last few years.
Julia Roberts is mean spirited. Especially in the last several years. Loyalty is fine; but it is not necessary at this time.
Well, Julia is wrong. That’s really all there is to say. And the remark comes off as catty and unnecessary.
I gave Conan a try but I didn’t find him all that funny. A lot of his stuff was very similar to Leno – jabs at NBC, etc.
Conan is hilarious. Julia is just sucking up to David Letterman. She hasn’t had a hit movie in years.
Julia is intelligent, well-spoken and has never been afraid to share her opinions. GOOD FOR HER! She’s a seasoned, brilliant actress whose marriage and children are clearly priority. One classy lady in a career where so many of these younger ‘up and comers’seem like nothing more than TRASH.
She’s washed up so it doesn’t matter what she says.
Oh shut up, Julia. Just shut UP.
I think it’s cute she says that. Everyone has a favorite. I prefer Conan but that “Dave” comment was funny.
I’ll take Dave over anyone, late night or not. Julia Roberts is over the hill? When was the last time Eddie Murphy was funny?
Does she have a career anymore? It was a tacky thing to say. And anyone using the term “classy” to describe a woman who’s current husband was married when she began sleeping with him apparently doesn’t know what “class” is.
Is Dave that worried about Conan that all of his guests and saying how great he is? If you’re watching Dave you much feel the same way. I had to read about the comments online because I’ll take ANYONE over Dave!
I like Dave and he’s quite funny, but no one cracks me up quite like Craig Ferguson. He’s just so messed up in the head from all the years he was high and drunk off of booze that you can’t help but to laugh at his antics….Especially his monologue or rant at the beginning of each show…they’re always funny because he always gets sidetracked with another thought while talking about something else…
lsembard – Everyone is entitled to their opinion here… Insulting ME, however, was completely uncalled for. THANKS.
I think both of these TV hosts are part of the liberal elite left wing communist media that is corrupting our nation. What happened to good Christian shows like Crook N Chase or the Barbara Mandrell show?? Now that was quality television that real honest patriotic americans could enjoy. May you grow stong in Christ!
