'MTV Movie Awards': 'Twilight' sweeps, Eminem walks

Categories: Television

Mtvawardskiss_l Andy Samberg did a super-fine job hosting the MTV Movie Awards. His goofball enthusiasm worked just fine; his opening parody of films ranging from Twilight to Star Trek was terrific, and … oh, let’s just cut to the chase: Do you think Eminem was truly angry at Bruno/Sacha Baron Cohen for landing crotch-first on the rapper as he sat in the audience? (Watch the epic confrontation, embedded below.) It’s hard to believe, after Eminem threw a similar fit at Triumph the Insult Comic Dog at the VMAs a few years ago, that he’d be truly angry at this stunt. Must have been a put-on on Em’s part, right? Also, good for Zac Efron, who won the award Bruno was presenting, for knowing there was nothing he could do but be upstaged by the Bruno-Eminem spectacle. His “that was the coolest way I’ve ever been introduced” remark hit just the right, modest note.

Oddly enough, the most vulgar moment of the show, depending on where you place your vulgarity-meter, wasn’t even Bruno, but the Samberg-planted winner for Sound Editor, who kept humping his golden-popcorn award and yelling, “S— my golden d—, Samberg!” Which is not to say it wasn’t also pretty darn funny.

While I loved Amy Poehler’s expletive filled acceptance speech in winning the “WTF” Award (and her shout-out to “Adam Sandwich”), the comic high-point of the night for me was probably the “cool guys don’t look at explosions” number in which Samberg was aided by Will Ferrell as Neil Diamond and director-producer J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Fringe) channeling some combination of Thomas Dolby and The Knack while playing keyboards.

MTV Shows
The Twilight sweep was a testament to the power of its fans. After a while, the spectacle of Kate Winslet in clips from The Reader, with that film losing repeatedly to Twilight, began to seem like a joke devised by Samberg himself. And Kristen Stewart’s charming klutziness while accepting her Best Female Performance award only earned her more points; indeed, she and Pattinson seem like very good sports in general. Twilight devotees will be parsing the new trailer shown this night closely, I’m sure — feel free to chime in with your impressions in the Comments section below.

How about you? What did you think of the entire MTV Movie Awards show?

Could the Twilight cast be any more awkward? Even the way they walk and sit in their chairs makes me uneasy. They are a good looking bunch but the mumbling was weird.
Overall a very decent show. I like Samberg alot on SNL and it translated well tonight. The Eminem thing was definetly an act. It was very well done with “Bruno”. There’s no way that it wasn’t a put on.

Yeah Twilight wasn’t the best movie of the year but MTV is for teens and youth alike so it isn’t surprising that movies catering to the young win, this isn’t the Oscars after all it is MTV with a special award for Best Kiss after all. Don’t take it too seriously though I’m sure a bunch of Twibashers are going to come on here and start screaming any minute now.

OMG Andy Samberg was hilarious all night. I loved the opening sequence, song with Will Ferrell & the Teen Wolf sketches the most. I love Twilight so I was thrilled for the trailer & it was great. Those poor kids just don’t know how to do spotlight lol They are awkward to the extreme & I love them for it.

Very disappointing night, but it was to be expected I guess. I have no idea why they cut the “Best Villian” award off TV.
I don’t know about Eminem knowing. He isn’t THAT good of an actor.

Well I’m sure a bunch of Twilovers, either tweens or lovelorn female adults are going to come on here and start screaming how great Twilight is any minute now.

They announced the winner for best villain during the red carpet pre-show, which was weird. Why not just include it in the actual show?

  • sierrarose

i can only hope that eminem was acting and aware of the joke before it happened. if MTV pulled this on him without his prior knowledge, it was completely out of bounds. anyone who wonder why, i refer to “relapse”. suppose he was writing from real life experience there? now how funny does that prank seem?

Duran Duran are currently in the studio working on their 13th studio album and is being produced by Mark Ronson, who’s worked with the likes of Amy Whinehouse, Lily Allen, and Christina Aguilera- to name a few!!

I thought Kristen Stewart was high . . . not clumsy.
Watch her throughout the show again and tell me she wasn’t on something :X

  • mary

Zachary Quinto’s facial expression while watching the spectacle was definitely the best part of the whole video.

  • Craig

That whole Eminem-Bruno thing was most definitely not staged. Em looked pretty pissed, as he should have been.

Can’t expect anything good from the actual awards, and the screaming fans were mighty annoying at times (mostly anytime Twilight was mentioned, big shock), but it was surprisingly fun to watch!

I don’t believe Eminem knew what Bruno was going to do. I’m not convinced MTV knew either. I wonder if Sasha Baron Cohen somehow orchestrated that on his own. It was brutal. I felt really bad for Eminem! I mean he tried to apologize for his temper at Moby & Triumph because he knew he was wrong but that guy’s junk right in his face had to be hard to take!!

  • shamon

Miley Cyrus nipples was the best and the new moon trailer

  • bruno rules

sasha baron cohen is brilliant! give him props alone for the perfect landing! He is a comic genius, no one makes us cringe and pee our pants laughing like he does, and i will never tire of seeing his hiney and if eminem was in on it, genius on his part as well!

  • danielle

i loved jim carrey’s speech especially when he said…”in front of the cute kid from twilight….” and then he wished they would rescind prop 8 lol lol

  • Dave

Why should Eminem be angry? He’s made a career embarassing/mocking celebrities or his wife. He sure didn’t seem to like the shoe being on the other foot.

  • meghan

eminem got a taste of his own medicine. thank you GOD.

  • Shamrock

Hell, when I was a teenager films like A Few Good Men, Menace II Society, Pulp Fiction and Seven won. So now it’s come down to Twilight…just sad.

  • vicki

MTV you are wrong!!!!!I hope to god eminem files a suit

  • Kisha

Samberg’s “cool guy’s don’t lookat explosions was the highlight for me .I’m not the demo MTV is going for the show was as average as it always has been. The Eminem -Bruno encounter didn’t look staged to me .Eminem and his posse look pissed.

  • jaime

i hope eminem sue the mtv’s

  • Pickle

It was only a matter of time til Eminem got what he had coming….and of all people…Sacha Baron Cohen aka Bruno! LOL!

  • CC

As far as the winners go…I felt like I was watching the Teen Choice Awards.

  • Stef

Well no matter what it was definitely the most entertaining MTV movie awards in awhile… but Ken, you are going to talk about the Breaking Bad finale, right?

  • Blue Silver

Sue MTV?? Eminem has made his career ragging on many peeps, including his wife so big freakin deal! Now, he was the one with someone else’s ass plastered on his face. Once again, goes to prove that ‘what comes around goes around’.

  • Steve

I would be really pissed too if that guys crotch landed on my face. Doesn’t matter who you are, its messed up.

  • Shamrock

The last two year’s Best Movie have sucked. MTV continues it’s downfall.

  • Pickle

Check the video out again, Eminem had plenty of time to move away when he saw Bruno descending towards him. It was a darn entertaining video snippet, I will say.
