I watched The Unusuals last night; did anyone else? During its brief time on the air, I’ve become fond of this oddball cop show, especially the interplay between Amber Tamblyn’s Casey and her partner, Walsh, played by Jeremy Renner. The show reminds me a little bit of NYPD Blue crossed with Barney Miller with its shaggy-dog storylines and fine ensemble acting. (Anything that brings the terrific stage actor Terry Kinney back to TV — here playing the New York precinct captain — is OK with me.)
Last night’s episode was typically solid. I’m enjoying the subplot about the cop played by Adam Goldberg who has the least alarming-sounding brain tumor on television. (I had been getting a little tired of Goldberg’s hangdog, monotone style until he grew a cop-moustache and started showing some life on this series.) And last night’s guest star, Shelley Berman playing an octogenarian who goes on a crime spree to feel the vigor of youth, is always welcome: someone should make videos of Berman’s iconoclastic stand-up routines from the 1950s and ’60s available.
ABC has cancelled The Unusuals, but it’ll be around a few more weeks. I’m wondering if you have been enjoying this charming police show.
Anyone watching The Unusuals?

I enjoyed the show because some of the plots seemed to be a homage to the old 87th Precinct stories. I also detected a bit of the short-lived Dennis Leary show The Job.
I think it’s a pretty good show. To bad it got axed before it could get started.
I have been watching the unusuals since the first show. It has good stories and the character development is so much better than 95% of the shows on tv. Why they cancelled this show is beyond me. Everybody I introduce to the show loves it. The playback interogation scene last night was priceless.
I am going to miss this show. Love Walsh!
I LOVE this show. I have no idea how they can cancel a show this good with this kind of cast before they actually give it a shot.
Why make it if they dont actually want the Unusuals to, you know, MAKE IT???
I too have been watching the Unusuals and loving it. I was so sad that it didn’t get picked up. Great cast – and I really wanted to see where it would go. I don’t usually watch cop shows, but I liked this one from the start.
Awesome show! Wish they’d keep it coming.
I forgot to watch last night! Well, I was sick.
But I wish ABC didn’t cancel this show. I liked it.
I’ve been loving this show. It’s the cast that made me want to watch and its the cast and the great comedy that keeps me coming back. I hate that the network didn’t really give this show a chance.
I love(d) The Unusuals! It was a good change from the typical cop show, and I always need a good comedic interruption. I’m sad that is is going off–ABC didn’t really give it a valid chance–it didn’t start until April and they cancelled it after just a few episodes.
We liked this one, especially my husband. I thought the characters were great and the stories kind of fun. I was surprised that they didn’t give it more of a chance.
This show was doomed from the start. ABC replaced a cop drama with a funky twist (Life on Mars) with another cop drama with funky twists? What were they thinking? You don’t open another Italian restaurant in the same place where one just failed. If ABC believed in The Unusuals enough to air it, why not air it in a time slot where it had a chance? Likewise, why cancel Life on Mars, only to replace it with something so similar? I was a huge fan of Mars, so while I never watched Unusuals, I certainly feel for those who enjoyed the show. Stupid network.
It sucked. I am glad they got rid of it.
I love The Unusuals, it’s way better than Southland, but of course ABC kills the one I like and NBC picks up the subpar one … Oh well.
I’m a huge fan of The Unusuals and Jeremy Renner. Loved the episode when he tells Amber Tamblin he’s not Allison’s boyfriend, he’s her “man.” I will miss the show. But I hope Jeremy Renner goes on to have a very big career.
