'Better Off Ted', 'Dollhouse' renewals: Fan culture exerts its power!

Dollhouse
, renewed? Better Off Ted, renewed? Whaa? Are we living in a new alternate world, where intelligent but low-rated shows with potential for increased audience size can now thrive? No. This news, as reported by the Caesar of scoop, Michael Ausiello, is simply a great display of power: passionate fans finally making networks understand that, at a scary economic time to be a network, they’d better start listening to the fans.

There’s no doubt in my mind that these two shows — overseen by distinctive, original creators (Joss Whedon for Dollhouse; Victor Fresco for Better Off Ted — will receive the renewal notices because of all the internet support that bombarded Fox and ABC. They would doubtless deny it, but I would guess that both networks were mindful of past mistakes: Fox in having cancelled Whedon’s Firefly and ABC for cancelling Pushing Daisies, or name your own 100 times these networks, and CBS and NBC have killed creativity prematurely.

Yes, I lament that there wasn’t yet this kind of massive rallying in cyberspace to save older shows some of us loved, such as Andy Richter Controls The Universe.

But, hey, doesn’t it give you Chuck fans hope?

I cannot tell you how excited I am about this news! Even getting just 13 more Dollhouses makes me happy, and Ted now has a bit more time to find an audience (my theory – it’ll be syphoning viewers off of a bound-to-decline Scrubs that it will share a night with). And it only makes me even more optimistic for Chuck.
The bad news, though, is that between these, Glee, and all my other favorites, my weekly TV quota is going to start to get ridiculous in the fall. Bye bye social life!

I wonder that this gives Terminator a chance for a 13 episode season 3!?

  • Abby

I do thinkthat the FIrefly factor worked in Dollhouse’s favor. Fox was clearly in error when they cancelled that show, so now they’re making up for it by giving Dollhouse time to find its audience and crative voice. Which rocks, because Dollhouse just keeps improving week to week. This is the first Joss Whedon show that didn’t wow me right out of the gate, but I like it, and I see it’s potential to become great, and now it has the chance to realize its potential. Now if NBC would just officially renew Chuck, I would be happiness personified!

So, am I the only one who sees waaaayyyy too many Pushing Daisies parallels?
    1. ABC Network
    2. quirky comedy
    3. low rated, critically acclaimed first season
    4. surprising renewal
If all goes the same way, we’ll see cancellation come late 2009.
I hope not. ABC crushed my hopes for the quirkiness once, they shall not do it again.
Oh, and nay for Scrubs. Great season (should’ve been series) finale.

Dollhouse was just a victim of bad scheduling. With the right timeslot and some MARKETING…it will succeed.

Yah! I really like Dollhouse. I wasn’t wowed with the first episode, but like Buffy (with its poor 1st epps# Dollhouse has improved immensely & i’m a fan of anything Whedon.
Also, I really don’t watch any comedys #except for the excellent Office#, however, Ted is funny & have found myself watching each week #I’ve seen like 3 epps) & am so glad its getting renewed.
Yah for both. Still mad at FOX for cancelling Firefly & Tru Calling, but keeping Dollhouse on is making up to me.

  • GARY

I am pumped about dollhouse being renewed. Thank God for Whedon agreeing to a smaller budget and thank you fans for doing all you could. The only sad part is…..now i know they are gonna cancel terminator chronicles!

  • Lola

I’m so happy they renewed Better Off Ted! The cast is so funny and Ted is too cute.

  • Nessa

It was a HUGE mistake to cancel Pushing Daisies, that show was the BEST, well second best when I found out about Chuck on NBC, now Save Chuck!!!! (Pretty Please) :D

As much as I enjoyed the growth of Dollhouse over the season, I would have given anything to get Pushing Daisies back. A true original and so creative. Too creative for network TV ultimately, I suppose.

It was such a good day yesterday with renewals confirmed for Dollhouse, Castle and Better Off Ted! And I would’ve just loved it if had NBC had announced a Chuck renewal as well – they didn’t, so my fingers remain crossed and I keep sending prayers out.
And it IS great that it seems like the fans made a difference .. that the networks actually worked harder at coming up with deals to make renewals happen .. and whatever else went down as well.
True, not all the shows I watched this past year (and perhaps the year before) are getting renewed .. and, yes I still lament their loss .. but the fact that a few of them, whose futures were uncertain at one point or another, ARE getting renewed .. does make me feel better as a TV viewer.

I can’t wait to wach dollhouse, it seems good! http://boomersdatingsite.com

  • Arlene

I learned about Dollhouse yesterday & was so happy — e-mails and prayers do pay off.
If only ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ were renewed too, I’d be in the proverbial 7th heaven (no pun intended).

  • Snarf

Great news. Talk about shock and awe.

  • Joe

I’d rather have Pushing Daisies, Firefly and Futurama all back than have to suffer through another episode of Dollhouse. If they cancel Terminator and renew Dollhouse then I’ll know Fox has lost their marbles completely.

  • Joe

Renewing Scrubs after that brilliant finale is a HUGE mistahe for ABC. As far as my viewing habits are concerned that was the last episode of Scrubs.
This new season will probably be like After MASH or Golden Palace. Such a pity to destroy the legacy of Scrubs with one more desperate season.

  • Jennifer

It’s good to see networks holding on to shows, but it’s probably because they don’t have much else lined up. Chuck will be renewed and I think they’re holding it off to make themselves look good. They’ve been trashed enough lately for letting go of Life, which is still what I’ll miss the most.

    Better off Ted…THANK GOD!!!

To be honest, I couldn’t care one way or the other about Dollhouse. I’d much rather have Terminator. Better Off Ted, on the other hand, is a great show and I’m so happy they are giving it another chance. 30 Rock and The Big Bang Theory started off slow and almost got canceled but now they are doing very well. Here’s hoping Better Off Ted goes the same way!

  • JoeC

‘Dollhouse’ renewed, great news! This show has the potential to be as good as ‘Buffy’ was. Looking forward to Echo and the gang returning; perhaps with a better time slot?!?!?!?!?

Here are my current favorites: The Big Bang Theory (renewed quickly), Chuck (not yet, but still hoping), Terminator (ended well, although I still prefer the T1 theory of time travel that the past cannot be altered), Dollhouse (now renewed).
That’s the order, so I’m still hoping for Chuck and TSCC, I guess. I usually watch/DVR Heroes, but mostly because it is after Chuck. (most of the episodes do not have enough continuity and focus, recently… the show still seems to be showcasing super abilities rather than people, some of whom have different abilities).

  • Wildwest

Now, how about The Unusuals at ABC? Quirky, fun, entertaining. Needs some episodes!!

  • TV_Pete

I wonder how many other shows might be saved if they were willing to cut costs (and salaries) in these troubling economic times. Maybe such a move would help save Chuck (and TSCC, I guess).

  • Dave

I thought dollhouse was great and I really hope Chuck comes back because the last episode was SO awesome. http://gayinphoenix.com

  • Kye

So stoked about the Dollhouse renewal. I really can’t believe though how many people are whining about it ’cause they think TSCC won’t be renewed now. Good! That show has been given more than enough of a chance to improve but every week it’s just brutal! Show’s on Fox face two problems. One, they only show two hours of primetime TV per night. So while the other networks have three hours to schedule everything into, Fox has less. While that means there isn’t as much crap, it also means not a lot of time slots to put good shows in or shows that are still finding their audience. The second thing show’s on Fox have to overcome is American Idol. I can’t stand the show, but that’s besides the point. Once Idol starts it hijacks the entire schedule and shows are constantly being moved around or put on hiatus. In a sense Dollhouse being on Fridays is a good thing, because you know that none of the marquee shows are going to bump it out of its place. Anyway, congrats to Whedon. Can’t wait!

    Damn… Wasn’t expecting a Dollhouse pickup!
