'Saturday Night Live': Justin Timberlake brings the funny back

Move over, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin: Justin Timberlake has joined the ranks of repeat-hosts who always lift Saturday Night Live to a higher level of quality. Timberlake was all over the show last night, singing and acting in everything from current recurring sketches (in drag as “Peg,” he perked up Kristen Wiig’s wilting Target store bit) to musical numbers (playing keyboards during Ciara’s performance of “Sex Love Magic”), and reviving oldies (he and Jimmy Fallon popped up for a “Barry Gibb Talk Show”).

Perhaps best of all, Timberlake and Andy Samberg did a Mother’s Day-themed sequel to their “D— In A Box” digital short. This one once again managed to make vulgarity witty, as their dorky-hipster characters hymned mothers they’d like to — well, this was one for the MILFs in the SNL audience, complete with cameos by Susan Sarandon and Patricia Clarkson:

The “Weekend Update” segment featured Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Leonard Nimoy in an amusing Star Trek plug. But the scene-stealer was Fred Armisen’s superbly tasteless New York Governor David Paterson, bumping into the scenery he was stealing and making non-stop New Jersey jokes.

As for Timberlake, his energy and good nature seemed boundless, whether he was crooning through an opening parody number about hosting (“I love you!” someone shouted; “I love you, too!” he shouted back without missing a note) or taking part in a sketch about Irish immigrants arriving at Ellis Island. His thick-brogued “Cornelius Timberlake” said, “I dream of a day when my great-great-grandson will bring sexy back.”

Certainly Timberlake brought the funny back to SNL. Did you watch? What did you think?

This was the best show of the year by a mile. If only the rest of the cast were as talented, the show could be this good every time.

His best hosting job to date, and that’s saying something. The guy is so charming, he’d be great just on his own laurels, but he always raises the bar. Loved the show, loved the skit. After a boring season only interesting when he showed up, you’d think this wouldn’t have helped much, but thank goodness Timberlake took a whole night to host. Surely Will Ferrell will be amazing next week and the show can end on a high note after a dismal season. Happy Mother’s Day! hahaha.

Easily the best show of the year for SNL. He should host every other week or just be a regular because when he is not on, the skits are hit or miss. When he is on, every skit is funny even when the writing is bad. Heck, he made the Target sketch funny. Even more amazing, the digital short lived up to the hype created by the previous one about boxes. I have a lot of friends who are just now catching on to how funny JT is, and really, how talented. Schedule JT for next season NOW. Is there anything JT can’t do?

Sadly, I fell alseep during the first musical performance. I really wanted to see the Barry Gibb Talk Show! Can’t wait until next week with Will Ferrell.

That was amazing last night, I haven’t laughed like that in a long time. “Mother Lover” will be another viral hit.
J.T. is a natural for SNL. Great stuff!

Good show, but the funny never left.

I thought the Ellis Island skit was hysterical too, especially when he referenced a certain female pop singer, saying “He hit that.” LOL! Amazing episode!!! JT never disappoints!!!

Awesome, awesome job last night…I had been excited, & anxious, all week, & JT did not disappoint. Loved the Target sketch w/ “Peg”, Plasticville (“Mediocre Face!”-lol), & Motherlover (as soon as I saw them walking out of the detention center, I knew it was gonna be awesome! & The Barry Gibb Talk Show was ok, but all in all, JT, again, did an amazing job!

I actually liked it, have not laughed that hard since Dwayne Johnson hosted

i liked all of the non recurring stuff. I’m not a big fan of Justin’s music, but he still surprises me with how good he is on SNL. He even made the awful Target lady sketch somewhat funny.
Fred is good as Patterson, but I thought Bill’s Spitzer was great too. Putting those two impressions together during update was a brilliant idea. It was my favorite sketch of the night.

Im a mother lover, your a mother love, we should f#$% each others mother…

  • Josh

Obviously Timberlake is on another level when it comes to SNL. By far the funniest episode of the year. From diming out Britney (privately, he hit it!) to Plasticville, and Motherlover to Robin Gibb, he is just superbly talented, and I can’t get enough of him. The man crush is in full bloom!

I’m still laughing over the show. Thanksfully I taped it so I can keep on laughing. Timberlake is easily the best host they’ve had since the old timers. The digital short was hysterical as was the Ellis Island skit. Target lady, the plastic surgeryville, and barry gibb talk show all infused with new laughter. Like I said, I’m still laughing.
