'Gilmore Girls': Your Saturday classic, 'Rory's Dance'

Tagged:

Look, I’ll be honest with you: I was supposed to write something about last night’s Bono/George Clooney interview on CNN, but who cares, really? Clooney was charming, Bono was Irish. Done. Frankly, what I’d rather write about is that, this evening, SoapNet is airing a classic, season-one episode of Gilmore Girls, called “Rory’s Dance.”

If you don’t recall it, the title helps: Rory, with great reluctance, goes to her first formal dance, with Dean (yes, Supernatural fans, Jared Padalecki had a career before he was Sam Winchester).

The subplot of the episode involved Lorelai having a back spasm and her prim mom coming over to care for her. As always, the banter between Lauren Graham’s Lorelai and Kelly Bishop’s Emily is superb, as when Emily, to comfort Lorelai, makes her what she claims was one of Lorelai’s favorite childhood meals, a mashed-banana on toast:

How great was Gilmore Girls, huh? The episode is of course full-to-bursting with cultural references, from Dorothy Parker to Squeaky Fromme, from Susan Faludi to Oscar Levant.

They just don’t make TV like this anymore, do they? And this was back in prehistoric times. You know: 2000! The WB!

Tell me if you remember this, or if you’re seeing it for the first time and liking it. Thanks.

I miss thissdhow and a miss the WB, so many good shows remember Gilmore Girls, Buffy, Angel, Felicity, Dawson’s Creek, etc? I love the scene with Emily trying to get Lorelei to eat the banana toast!

Loved Gilmore Girls! Wasn’t a Dean fan. I have the whole series on DVD and watch it sometimes when I need a bit of snappy dialogue to get my day jumpstarted. I miss the Gilmores and wish it could have continued longer. Luke, Lorelai, Rory, Ms. Patty and of course KIRK! Kirk was the best part of the show! Oh they were the original GG.

Gillmore Girls came out in 2000, not 1990.

LOL, yeah, I was just about to say. As Taylor said, this ep is from 2000, NOT 1990! Let’s not age these girls, shall we??? ;-P

Oh how I miss this show and the complicated mother/daughter relationships mixed with enough pop-culture references to make any entertainment geek happy. I still haven’t found a show to fit the Gilmore Girls shaped hole in my heart.

That Amy Sherman-Palladino could write, and Lauren Graham and the cast brought it all to life so well!
Splendid episode & series! Too bad it went off-air unresolved!

  • Vicki

The greatest show ever and this is perhaps one of its best episodes. Emily and Lorelai’s scenes, to be sure, were amazing, but let’s not forget Lorelai and Rory’s final scene. Guh. Love it!
