Kathy Griffin, two shows on Bravo tonight: Love her, or so over her?

For me, Kathy Griffin is one definition of “acquired taste.” I used to detest her braying caw of a voice, her raunch-without-wit stand-up act. I found her shamelessness as a B-lister posing as a D-lister yearning to be an A-lister a joke that got old quickly.

But recently, I had a small change of heart. Her New Year’s Eve co-hosting duty with CNN’s Anderson Cooper proved to be bawdily delightful: it was like watching Rhoda Morgenstern turn on Mary Richards, fangs sharpened.

Tonight, Griffin virtually takes over Bravo’s prime-time with a new comedy special, Kathy Griffin: She’ll Cut A Bitch, followed by her hosting of Bravo’s A-List Awards. I’ve seen She’ll Cut, and it doesn’t have me rolling in the aisles. The endless routine about sucking up to Cher (“I queened out on her so hard”) seems to exhaust even the crowd that came to see her. On the other hand, I laughed at the joke that gives her special its title (teeny spoiler alert: the person who’ll “cut” is Judge Judy, whom Kathy’s mother worships).

Griffin can also be explosively funny when placed in a sanitary setting like any awards show, where her irreverence toward celebrity is bracingly refreshing.

So where do you stand, reader? Kathy Griffin: do you like her, or are you sick of her schtick?

Love her. She’s one of the funniest women in the business. I find her sense of humor refreshing, maybe it’s because I’m very tired of Hollywood–a city based on entertainment and art–taking itself so seriously. Kathy is awesome.

Ken, I’m with you. I used to dislike her (during her “Suddenly Susan” days, I dismissed her as a Vicki Lewis “News Radio” rip-off), but over the years she’s completley won me over. At this point, I think she’s one of the funniest women on the face of the Earth, and I absolutely adore her.

Love her- always have, but understand why some do not. Acquired taste is a good term.

Like Ken, I go back and forth on Griffin’s antics. I think she’s naturally funny, but her stand-up routine is a bore. Basically an hour of her standing up on stage dishing on celebrities she happened to run into. She doesn’t tell jokes. She tells stories about her life and pushes them through the “telling you what you want to hear” filter by (usually) confirming your celebrity idols are huge tools.

    Love her!

I think she’s funny but very mean spirited and hateful. I can only stand watching her about one hour a year, but I do find her amusing for that one hour… until she says something so cruel and insensitive that I have to turn the channel.

LOVE HER and can’t wait for the special tonight!!!

LOVE HER. Her audience is completely gay men and women though – and I find straight guys just can’t handle her humor. Consequently she’s always left off those ‘funniest women’ lists in favor of vastly overrated women like Sarah Silverman and Amy Poehler. Would love to see Kathy host a show like the Emmys where her celebrity barbs would be most effective!
