I just watched the pilot episode and i knew right away it’s gonna become my new favorite show. It’s gonna be my new third watch!
I thought Cudlitz did an excellent job. His character is not intended to be likeable but in my opinion it was not obnoxious. It seemed to be a realistic portrayal of an experienced veteran giving hard advice to a new guy.
Southland tried too hard to portray the rookie as incompetent and afraid, aside from the scene that showed his excellent shooting. I’m a firefighter and EMT and I know if you handle dead bodies as poorly as he does, you won’t last. The first time is difficult but if it drove him to vomiting he wouldn’t last in real life.
This show definitely reminds me of the first season of Third Watch with the interaction between the experienced cop and his partner the young cop (Sully and Ty Davis). Third Watch executed it better, however. This seems overdone.
The show was better than i had expected. Hopefully it doesn’t get canceled quick like The OC did.
this show is pretty similar to a book called l.a. rex by will beall – the main character is named ben, his dad is a powerful lawyer.
I’ve given it two weeks now. Ben McKenzie tries hard, but he is just not a good actor. Yes, he can do soulful looks, but almost anyone can. Look in a mirror and you can do it, too. It’s when he has to appear spontaneous, not look so thought out, and assume a character not himself, that it starts breaking down. I suspect he’s too much of an introvert to be a natural actor. I was surprised that he got another job after OC. If he keeps getting work, maybe he can slowly improve. The rest of the cast are more natural. I like the black female detective (sorry can’t think of her name). Her soft quality is unexpected for such a macho job.
Great episode tonight, hopefully the ratings show for it.

did the kid with the long blond hair play oliver on the OC? he looks just like him minus the hair.
This is one of the most racist shows on air right now. All the ‘bad’ people seem to have brown skin and the ‘good’ people seem to have white skin. I’ve watched this show three times and will not be watching it again.
Southland…this could be a classic. I have watched them all…Hill Street Blues, Homicide, Life on The Street (I think this was the best) and NYPD Blue. If the writers are careful and the cast lives up to its potential we might have another edgy cop blockbuster on our hands!!
Great show. Some people won’t like it because it portrays minorities as criminals. If those people looked at crime stats, they’d realize that minorities do commit crimes. The gritty reality and the moral ambiguity of the cops just adds to the realism.
love this new show , hate when they get you hooked and then it goes off the air. really look forward to it, i couldnt believe it was the season finale already its only been on maybe 5 times?
Wow! Ok people letLs talk cops and shows… this one kicked butt! Serious! loving Ben once again (this man is beautiful!) his character’s personality leaves me yearning to delve deeper into the depths of his being. Too hot dude!! TooHot!! …is it realistic… fo’sho’!! it is on point. Remember coppers are people too and are as imperfect as the rest-so on point there. I’m so loving this show it is wedding bells worthy. Too real if ya ask me… Coppers on the East&West rock this one.. For the critics, switch the channel if u can’t stomach the words, plot, realistic ass-wash commentaries and on the money references with race and politicking…. Yo! NBC! Good job! Now just don’t flub it up!! It’s a keeper. true dat! If NBC drops it then shame on GE!! I’d follow to competing network! word
I think this is a very good cop show so far. It feels real and for the production they are trying very hard to bring viewers to tag along side in the patrol car by steady cam, hope the series last long. I like the cast very much and it is a pity that the character “Nate” has to depart the show.
This is a great show !! Please keep it on the air. The characters make you want to keep coming back–esp. Cooper !
