this was the best oscars i’ve watched in years. i had no expectations of hugh jackman and he was great. having 5 past winners present was a stroke of genius. it flagged in the middle but there’s not a lot you can do about that. Queen Latifa singing was ery touching but they should hae concentrated on the video footage and not her.
apart from that no complaints, bring on next year

I absolutely loved the Oscar format this year. I admit that I didn’t have very high expectations for Hugh Jackman as a host, but he exceeded them completely. I found him charming and multi-talented, and I really loved the opening musical number. I thought the new format for presenting the acting awards worked really well, too. Using past winners and acknowledging each nominee seemed heartfelt. I was really annoyed by how the camera moved around during the tribute section–seemed very disrespectful. But, these reviewers need to get a life. I love James Franco and the whole Judd Apatow film mafia as much as anyone, but irony gets old after awhile. Sometimes old-fashioned entertainment works.

This years Oscar Night was for fans of all types of movies, not just snobby depressing ones, so I understand why the critics didn’t like it. That was the most entertaining Oscar’s in over 15 years. More importantly, it was a tribute to movies. All the types of movies we love. For the first time I felt comedies, romance (Yes I did a happy dance when the Twilight Star appeared), and action were all showcased with honor. It was night about movies and those artists that make them past and present, please continue with the introductions for each acting award by a previous winner that gave each nominee their special moment. Hugh was awesome!

I personally loved the Oscars this year; I thought it was entertaining & fun, & I especially enjoyed the new format for the acting awards.
I hope that the people in charge of the Oscars formatting don’t just read the reviews of cranky critics (sorry Ken, it’s true) & take into account the overwhelmingly positive comments from average viewers.

Hopefully the producers of the Oscars will read these MANY comments from people who LOVED the show. I realize I am a midwestern hick but everyone I watched it with and talked to really thought this year was something different and special. The 5 presenters were great and hearing heartfelt words about the nominees gave a little spotlight to all.

I’m tired of reading snarky, dismissive reviews by cranky old television critics who enjoy 7th grade humor. When your column comments are more knowledgable and interesting than your column itself, it tells me you are not necessary.
The Oscars put on a halluva show, and Hugh Jackman was the ultimate classy host.

Ken, I must totally disagree. This Oscars ceremony was a total breath of fresh air. I thought the best tweak was the past winner/nominee thing. That was GREAT! What a brilliant way to say, “Welcome to the club,” plus no nominee went home without a special moment. I sincerely hope that format is kept for years to come. Also, Reese Witherspoon explaining what a director does was only keeping with the narrative theme that ran throughout the night regarding the process of moviemaking. Weren’t you paying attention??

I completely disagree with Ken. I loved Hugh Jackman as the host and his musical numbers. Brianna, I agree about Rent. However, think about that show and the rest of the numbers they included. How well would that work together? Also, remmber, you were watching the Oscars NOT the Tonys. The number was a celebration movie musicals returning.
I liked the past winners presenting, but I did fall asleep. I was pleased that Sean Penn won. For those that complain about movies winning that no one has seen or heard of, they should be complaining about the theaters. I am from a small town. Fifteen minutes one way, two theaters that show at least half if not more of the same movies. Fifteen minutes the other way, different movies? No, same old stupid Mall Cop!

Wow! More Seth and James? Did you watch the same Oscars? I thought it was hilarious, the jokes were ballsy the speeches were preachy, and musicals were GREAT! I loved every single minute of it. Hugh Jackmans was amazing I hope they bring him back next year. On a side note, I really wish you enjoyed your job, it seems as though you so bitterly hate it that you can’t see anything good in it. Find another Job!
