Chris Brown and Rihanna: MTV to air 'Love in Trouble' news special

Tagged: ,

Chris Brown and Rihanna: Love in Trouble is the title of a special MTV will air on Monday at 6 p.m. EST. “In trouble”? Seems as though when one person is allegedly beaten by another person in the relationship, love is in considerably worse shape than “trouble.” MTV says it has gathered “journalists, industry professionals, and other experts to provide insight and commentary” about the Grammy-night felony battery charges brought against Chris Brown after an argument with his girlfriend, Rihanna. The network includes sound-bites from TMZ’s Harvey Levin. He comments on Brown’s “squeaky-clean looks” working in the singer’s favor with a jury may well be correct, as ill-making as that sounds with what few solid facts we know right now.

MTV also gave out a clip from freelance journalist Laura Checkoway, who’s interviewed Brown in the past:

Again, it’s pretty dismaying to hear someone say she’s “wasn’t that surprised” Brown is up on charges for this awful behavior. You want to scream, “Well then, why didn’t anyone help or come down hard on this guy before he did what he’s alleged to have done?” But of course, reporters aren’t social workers or therapists, and, again, the context of Brown’s comments to Checkoway about his “abusive family” and “his demons” provide a little insight.

MTV hasn’t made the entire special available yet, and I can’t say I look forward to combing though this dreadful story, but one can safely assume that MTV will do what all TV news does in these situations: provide its usual, vexed combination of insight and exploitation, with the bottom-line hope that viewers watching will be dismayed and repulsed by the incident being described.

MTV: irrelevant and now exploitation-ists. Good for you, MTV! The fact that you think aligning yourself with TMZ is a good idea shows why you’re hemorrhaging viewers.

This is ridiculous. These are two people who have allegedly just been through one of the most awful things that will ever happen to them. And I say allegedly because we still don’t know what happened. All that is out there is a bunch of BS from “sources close to the couple.” It’s absolute BS. Innocent until proven guilty had never existed in this country. The media, especially MTV and Perez Hilton, have been disgusting about this whole thing. But I would expect nothing less from the lie-telling American media. If Chris Brown is charged with a crime over this alleged incident, then let the justice systems do its job. There is no need for him to be prosecuted and persecuted by the media. Their being in the public eye does not give us a right to their business, contrary to what media vultures will tell you.

Regarding the proposed MTV programing, “Love in Trouble”: this is what I would say to the proponents of such a grotesque idea, especially, the MTV Execs, Ken Tucker and Harvey Levin: you, people have nothing else good to live for, and no use to humanity anymore, why don’t you, each find a fold to bury yourself in!! Here are two very young people -Chris and Rihanna(just a little older than my three teenagers) having a little trouble in their relationship, and you are developing a program of “entertainment” based on their tragedy?? Do you people not have children, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, just any relative or friends about the ages of Chris and Rihanna? What would you do, if they were in these two people’s situation -you find a way to profit off of it??
This is to you Harvey Levin: your parents sent you to law school just to acquire skills to peddle this smurt you do on TMZ? What a waste.
