I doubt this was a joke, he even dropped the f bomb which is a huge no no for the letterman show and i’m sure they really look down on that, especially CBS. This guy is a idiot and letterman should have attacked him but didn’t to save the integrity of the show and his character
I think he was on drugs and stoned out of his mind.
I watched this last night and thought a couple of things, First, if he truly is leaving show biz, he may have been contractually obligated to promote his new movie on Letterman and did so in protest, sort of saying to the movie’s producers “you want me to promote this on talk shows? Then watch how big a mistake you guys are making forcing me to do so.”
Or maybe it’s part of the act for Casey Afflec’s documentary about Phoenix’s life. But what struck me while I watched last night was at the very end. He took off his glasses and said something to Letterman as he shook his hand a second time. I would love to know what he said.
Maybe “sorry, they’re forcing me to do this,” or “this is all a spoof,” or “man, I’m really high right now.” And for those of you saying shame on Dave: Well get a friggin clue. I’ve been watching Letterman for 25 years. If you’re going to be an ass on his show, he’s going to have fun with you. He’s a comedian, not a health care professional.
I can’t imagine a more appropriate response to that twit Letterman. So refreshing to see that not everyone goes along with the cheese-ball routine, while the APPLAUSE sign flashes and the stupido studio audience clap their flippers like trained seals.
I kinda think they were both in on it — it’s entertainment, the audience (assuming it wasn’t a laugh track) was eating it up. (along with the band). Yet he wasn’t acting so differently from the short film clip either — a bit creepy.
PLUBICITY STUNT ! …and its working well for the guy if you ask me
I completely agree with Chaz. I did sense drugs AT ALL. Letterman completely failed to handle what was a magnificent opportunity given his stature in society. Pheonix was superior and Dave missed a wonderful opportunity
i think its a prank, ether that or he is self destructing his movie career, he cant be that stupid to work so hard to get to that point and throw it all away.

It has to be a joke. If it isn’t, well, career suicide. I think it is an Andy Kaufman bit. At least I hope so.
How can anyone be mad at Letterman? He clearly was trying to engage him early on, but gave up when Phoenix refused. If your going to show up and not even give a crap, thats what you get.
That is good television
How else do you cause attention to your new singing gig, you get on Letterman and act like a strung out hippie. It worked we are all talking about him now, just what he wanted.
This is why it is called “acting” because some people are good at it.
That was hilarious. For those of you that didn’t get it, you’re old and don’t know any better.
For someone who’s “leaving show business”, he’s sure working hard to get all this publicity.
