Elisabeth Hasselbeck lit into alleged-bong-hit-taking Michael Phelps on The View this morning, saying that the Olympic champ is “being paid millions to be an example [to youth],” and that if he’s willing to “take a drug that could impede his performance, would he be open to taking a drug that would enhance his performance?” Bam–in one sentence, Hasselbeck equated smoking marijuana with a willingness to take performance-enhancing drugs. She said flatly, “This is a question that’s going to be asked.” Naw, Elisabeth, just by you. Don’t you think?
In response to this, Whoopi Goldberg said, “I’m gonna make an admission, I hope you all are sitting down: I have smoked weed.” She then made the point that Phelps is being paid “millions” not to “be perfect,” but “to be a spokesperson for a company.”
Perhaps the best thing about this segment of “Hot Topics” is that it compelled Barbara Walters to say the phrase “smoke weed” a number of times. This was the funniest part of the show.
So, once again we must ask: Elisabeth Hasselbeck, defender of common sense or self-righteous prig?

And what would that point be? That weed is a gateway drug…to steroids?? Please, be real. As a weed smoker in the 70′s (not now) I can tell you from experience, smoking weed wasn’t a gateway for anything except the use of Twinkies!

Why does anyone listen to what Whoopi Goldberg has to say? How does she have any credibility to make comments concerning anything that has to do with human life? Oh right, she doesn’t.
She’s not equating weed to steroids – she’s reacting to the fact that MICHAEL PHELPS, Mr. Health and Athleticism (does anyone else remember Olympic announcers gushing over his diet and body fat and overall “my body is my temple” awesomeness?) was caught doing drugs. Period. The shocking thing is not that people smoke weed – the shocking thing is that Michael Phelps smokes weed. And the conclusion that, since Michael Phelps isn’t as “health conscious” as we all thought, he might therefore also be willing to succumb to the temptation of performance altering drugs (like A TON of other athletes) is not mind-blowing.
What if he’d been caught smoking a regular, perfectly legal cigarette? Wouldn’t people’s vision of “Michael Phelps” be just as altered?
