'Scrubs' to NBC: In Your Face!

Jan 7, 2009, 10:43 AM | by Ken Tucker

Categories:

I hadn't watched Scrubs much the past few seasons (and NBC certainly did not do much to remind me to check it out). But last night's two new episodes on its new network, ABC, were aces, top-notch, silly ("Steak Night!") and funny (the episode-closing bit with barely-inside-jokes about Tony Shaloub's universe-baffling multiple Emmy-wins) and a wee bit touching without being maudlin.

In short, the show proved decisively why it should continue. And as creator Bill Lawrence proved in his interview with my esteemed colleague Monsieur Ausiello, the show is likely to maintain this comic momentum for the rest of its season, and NBC made yet another boneheaded programming mistake in showing the show so little support over the years.

Scrubs fans and Scrubs skeptics: agree about last night? Disagree? Will you keep watching?

Alex Wed, Jan 21, 2009 at 08:07 AM EST

Yeah, it was Listen 2 This. I liked those, but then they started not being exclusively about music, (they started to include video games & comic books too) http://hardwood-floor.emenace.com/brucehar62/9.html installing ceramic floor tiles undefined

I'm so glad this show is back. I've always loved its strange combination of goofy and profound. It has always had some of the best guest shots in tv comedy. It even made me like Tara Reid again for a while. But I do hope that it doesn't go on without Bill Lawrence and Zack Braff when they leave at the end of the season. It just wouldn't be the same.

ienjoyscrubs Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 12:00 AM EST

i like the dramatic episodes more

Meghan Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 09:47 PM EST

I couldn't be more excited that Scrubs is back...Thank you ABC! I've been watching since season one and can't get enough of the hilarious characters and wonderful writing! Love this group of actors, they make the show hard to miss!! Keep up the great work and again, thank you ABC!

Chris Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 02:25 PM EST

I am so happy Scubs left the No Basic Clue network! This show is the only orignal idea left on television. I've been an avid watcher from the beginning, and never have I seen such perfect cast chemistry from the get go. I hope you guys really consider staying on the air for a few more years, especially since ABC seems to be giving you the respect that that other network is too absent minded to realize.

Ryan Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 04:31 AM EST

While the season 8 premier seemed like just another episode of Scrubs (very good, but not amazing), the second episode will go down as one of my all-time favorites. JD, Turk, and Cox continue to make me laugh and the new interns were great! I can only hope that ABC renews the show for another season and opens up the network wallet so the main cast returns.

Bucket Head Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 07:43 PM EST

I love this show. Got into it a couple years ago on syndication. I was stoked when I heard it was coming back, and already have the season-recording set up on the DVR. I hope the show keeps going, but it's hard to imagine it without some of the key characters I've gotten used to. One comment, I don't like the Ted character. I think it would be MUCH better if they added a Father Mulcahey-type chaplain. Everybody else, rocks!

bootsycolumbia Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 11:00 PM EST

I haven't watched Scrubs in years, due to NBC screwing around with its timeslot so much. But I watched last night and it was as good as I remember it. Glynn Turman should really be remembered at Emmy time, as should Courtney Cox. She was hilarious! Best line: when JD explaining why he prefers appletinis to beer ("They make me feel fancy!"). I laughed over that line all day today.

Andrew Godfrey Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 02:12 AM EST

Its 'the' best show on Tv as of the last few years and was in tie with arrested development. BRaff and Faison with John C. McGinley will remain unforgettable, so will the rest of the characters, 10 out of 10

Kimberley Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 11:52 PM EST

Well.. your column now makes me want to check it out! I missed most of last season, and that was ok, it didn't seem to be as 'silly' and goofy as it used to be, but I think I'll give it a go again!

Katelyn Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 04:15 PM EST

I got into Scrubs about 2 years ago and I was really impressed with it. I haven't seen a show that can keep me interested and make me laugh in a long time. My friends and I always watch it together. It kind of reminds us of...well, us. For example, today in my theater class, my friend (who reminds me a lot of J.D.) and I did the "steak night" song and dance. The little one-liners, the "fantasies", and witty writing keep this show going. I think that Season 8 will certainly bring something more to the table. However, most unfortunately, this is rumored to be Scrubs' last season. Scrubs will end with a bang. And there's no better way to get this bang started with the episodes that were shown on ABC. My Jerks and My Last Words were both superb examples of the type of legacy Scrubs should leave behind. It takes a certain kind of sense of humor to sit through an episode of Scrubs. Not everyone is so fortunate to have it.

Carmen Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:49 PM EST

Scrubs was great. My Last Words was a beautiful episode. Perfect mix of hilarity "steak night", Jo's attempt at connecting with a patient, and Ted how can you not love sad sack Ted. Of course at the end I was crying a like a baby at George's final moments. Glynn Turman really should be remembered at Emmy time. He was amazing. I'll be sad when Scrubs ends but it looks like it will end on high note.

Mickey Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 11:08 AM EST

The writing is sophomoric, trite and personifies everything bad and wrong with television. I always assumed the show was written as a junior high school drama club project. NBC showed a rare moment of clarity in dumping this horrible excuse of a show. Too bad it lingers on like a canker sore.

alex Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:36 AM EST

personally i love this show. i dont think it should ever leave. lastnights episodes were hilarious though i can't beleive the janitor got fired..crazyness...but keep doing what you do i love it.

chris Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 01:14 AM EST

I thought the first was a little lackluster... It wasn't all that funny (except the last 2 minutes with all the in-jokes) and I felt a little awkward watching it. The second episode, on the other hand, was AMAZING. I almost cried.

Jelliot Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:55 AM EST

The first two episodes were a classic reminder about what Scrubs is really all about. Bill Lawrence always had this wodnerfull knack of mixing the laugh-out-loud comedy with deep intense drama.

Scrubs was always under-appriciated, but NBC didnt do it any favours whilst season 6 and 7, had good drama but without any hard hitting comedy. All the classic gags come from the early seasons and I can see the 8th being in the same mould.

There is no doubt in my mind that I will continue to watch Scrubs even without JD in the coming seasons. Although its a big loss, I cant see myself pulling away from such brilliant craft, smart comedy. I just hope that whatever spin off they make, I hope it has the same success as Fraser did when it spun off from Cheers.

In any case, I welcome back the show and I am glad to see great comedy intertwined with deep moments.

On a personal note, the current show is based around JDs life and as such I want to see him end the show on a high note, him and Elliot ending up together whilst he becomes Dr. Cox right hand man after he becomes the Chief of Medicine.

It would mean that this story has come a complete cirlce and in 8 years we have seen the climax in JDs career and personal life.

Here is to Scrubs continuing, ending on a high and may it be filled with many gags and deep prosound moments.

Jim Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:45 AM EST

Tivo makes it such that it really doesn't matter if ABC or NBC airs the show as long as they airs. Thanks, ABC! These new episodes are terrific. Courtney Cox's character is a great addition.

Dave Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:35 AM EST

I had pretty much written off Scrubs latest seasons (in part due to new reports of the in-fighting between the staff and NBC), and I was conetent to watch Scrubs reruns. Last night showed masterfully why it will continue to surprise you. They were a little too reminiscent of the first few seasons, but they were both still wonderful.

jen Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:29 AM EST

RW, maybe you should get off your high horse about the office. it has a following, a pretty big one. and the wire has gotten lots of critical acclaim and awards.

jen Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 12:12 AM EST

yeah, these episode were definitely reminiscent of classic scrubs. i especially loved jd shooting of the flare gun at the end, in honor of george. :D and i'm really liking courtney cox's character and the crazy combo of total sweetie-pie vs. total a-hole.

Alli Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:28 PM EST

“Mr. Valentine, my attending really wants me to connect with my patients so, if it’s OK with you, I thought I’d get the ball rolling with personal story."

"You can call me George."

"Awesome. I’m feelin’ it. So George, last Friday, I’m at a bar. I take this guy home. He’s a little fat, but whatever, right? Chubsters are so grateful they usually try harder. Anyway, right in the middle of things, he’s sweating and snorting like a hairy rhino, and I just start to hate myself. Like really, really hate myself. So without even thinking I just headbutt him, right in the face. Bam. Clocked him between the eyes, knocked him out cold. So that’s what I got. What’ve you got goin’ on?"

"I like golf?”

1. Angry Intern is by far the best addition to the show.

2. After that, Episode 2 turned it all around and made me cry like a baby for the last five minutes. SCRUBS IS BACK.

Raven_Moon Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:24 PM EST

I LOVE "Scrubs," but I can admit the past few seasons have been lacking; better that most shows, but lacking. I was so happy to see the 8th season start off so well. The two episodes aired were fantastic, season 1 fantastic! I'm looking forward to seeing how things play out.

JGEO Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 10:19 PM EST

Love Scrubs. The episodes yesterday were hilarious! I was upset the way the season ended in May and how little NBC cared about the show. I hope to see Scrubs go on for a while!

Margie Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 09:03 PM EST

I was SO SICK of all the sex jokes the past few seasons and SO HAPPILY surprised with these two episodes. Scrubs was back to being it's silly, laugh out loud self. Yea!

Matt Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 08:35 PM EST

FIRE COURTNEY COX... SHE'S TERRIBLE... PLEASE KEEP MORE OF KELSO AND THE JANITOR

Seth Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 08:18 PM EST

I thought the episodes were great, but is the Janitor gone for the rest of the season or is he going to come back before the season ends?

Jenn C Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:35 PM EST

Scrubs rocks-definitely love Dr. Cox...It almost seemed that 2 different sets of writers wrote the episodes...I enjoyed Episode 2 a lot more than the 1st one...what was that all about? keep it a comedy...not a drama!

Tuzo Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 07:26 PM EST

Welcome back, Scrubs! We missed you. In the words of Dr. Cox, "tree-meh-heh-heh-heh-endous...Sally".

Jill Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:34 PM EST

It makes me laugh - consistently. That is more than I can say for a lot of shows...

KateNix Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:33 PM EST

Where was The Todd? I was expecting him to pop out when Carla and Elliot said "I Love You" to each other.

Johnnyvegas Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:19 PM EST

Oops. I meant Matt. If I going to be a sarcastic smart ass, I guess I should use the right name.

Johnnyvegas Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:17 PM EST

Message to Mark. They have this new thing now called a "remote" or "Clicker" that let's you change the channel without getting up. If you don't like the show before or after Scrubs, I would recommend exercising choice and switching to another station with a simple push of a button.

Tomorrow, I'll explain Tivo to to you.

Coyote Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 06:01 PM EST

Hey, Matt, why don't you spring for a DVR? Then you can record and watch 9 episodes of Scrubs in 3 hours. Or, record a couple episodes, then watch them during the commercial breaks of your 3-hour entertainment block. The possibilities are endless!

Jason Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:56 PM EST

I agree it would be nice if they could couple Scrubs with something, although I did watch an interesting special afterwards.

If they could bring back Carpoolers as a spin off with T.J. Miller as Marmaduke, I would watch.

Tim Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:44 PM EST

This show is awful. 30 Rock is way funnier.

Matt Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:42 PM EST

One final note. I don't intend to watch the program on ABC...not because I won't like it, but because they don't have anything to go with it. When I watch Earl on Thursday, I get to watch The Office, and 30 Rock and ER. What else does ABC have to offer? What are they going to couple it up with? Maybe they should bring back Car Poolers or Cavemen. I'm not going to make plans to sit down and watch one half hour sitcom...I like to make plans to watch 2-3 hours of TV...and ABC just doesn't have the programs.

Matt Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:25 PM EST

Amen RW

RW Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:22 PM EST

The fact that the masses do not watch this show makes me like it even more. I usually end up liking the shows that have no following (The Wire, The Office, Arrested Development). If the ratings are low i usually love it. The masses can keep Dancing with The Stars and 2 1/2 Men

Eddie G Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:17 PM EST

After reading the Bill Lawrence was going to treat the show like it was when it was in it's first few seasons, I new there would be reason to watch! Not saying that Scrubs has ever been bad, As I've not missed one episode of the show. Everything about Scrubs is great.... Great actors portraying great roles, the story line that always has a meaning and was deeper than what you'd expect from a comedy, the relationships, the goofiness, and the Music! The producers have blended everything so perfectly since day one, and It continues. NBC made a huge mistake, and I get upset knowing that not everyone is going to be back if they decide to continue with the show. Judy, and Zach braff have said that they're moving on, as has Bill Lawrence. As much as I enjoyed getting to see the new interns last night. The show will not be the same if they decide not to come back. I LOVE SCRUBS.... May it continue forever

Matt Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 05:01 PM EST

NBC screwed up when they moved Scrubs off Thursday night when it was the perfect segway to ER. Then when they moved it back, the network didn't support it because they had other successful sitcoms (Office, Earl, 30 Rock). Since TV networks first started, there have only been a scant few shows that have jumped from one network to another, and all but maybe one have made a go of it. The fact that ABC grabbed Scrubs is more a sign that they don't have any new, original ideas for a program. They've never been able to stand toe-to-toe with NBC in the comedy department (especially Must-See-TV Thursday), and CBS wins all the awards every year. I wouldn't be to confident that Scrubs will make it another season with ABC, especially if their ratings remain low. They (the producers) should be happy Scrubs is in syndication on so many networks, they'll be making cash off their product for years to come.

alex Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:56 PM EST

I love Courteney Cox! I'm really hoping her new show "Cougar Town" gets picked up.

Matt Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:49 PM EST

My favorite shows are still on NBC. I've watched Scrubs since it started, and quite frankly, the last few seasons have been just plain bad. Once a sitcom goes from relationships to raising babies, it's time to close the book. I wish Scrubs would have just gone away. Since ABC canceled Pushing Daisies, there isn't a show left on their network that I intend to watch. RIP ABC. NBC isn't much better, they always cancel shows I enjoy, but The Office & Earl, and CBS's Big Bang Theory are the only sitcoms worth my time. I'm 34, and have enjoyed sitcoms my whole life, from MASH & All in the Family, to Cosby, to Home Improvement, to today. The best comedy writers on TV today write commercials, not shows. The Networks don't support comedies...which is why my biggest laughs always come commercials. Networks like Reality, and police-dramas, that's it.

Leonard Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:48 PM EST

Lost in all the (deserved) hoopla is my favorite development of the night - Scrubs is finally in hi-def!

Luisa Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:48 PM EST

I forgot to mention how much I LOVED that they used Death Cab for Cutie's "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" at the end of the second episode. Perfect sentiment, perfect song. God, I love this friggin show!

Megan Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:43 PM EST

Absolutely! I love this show!

specter Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 04:28 PM EST

Was fantastic. So glad it's on ABC, it's my favorite network now. :D

Jenna Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:53 PM EST

I loved it. Perfect Scrubs, all around. I am very much enjoying the blonde-haired intern (Joe, right?) she is fantastic.

i will definitely keep watching. welcome back, Scrubs! I missed you so...

Skip Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:46 PM EST

What the h*ll besides reality garbage and a couple dumb game shows does NBC have to offer? I watch SVU, and that is it on the peaCOCK network. May they go down in flames, along with their biased news organization.

Kimmie G Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:45 PM EST

Am I the only person who got only one episode last night? The ABC station here in Phoenix only showed the second episode. Tonight though, they are broadcasting the first and second episodes in order. How random is that? I'm excited to check out both of the episodes tonight, especially after reading how great the first one is!

Kate Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:43 PM EST

While I agree with everyone saying "Suck it" to NBC...remember they are the ones that bring us the fabulousness that is 30 Rock! But I was very happy to have Scrubs back. I love this show (Fan since S1) and still watch the reruns on Comedy Central.

Marty McDoodle Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:38 PM EST

I have not watched them yet but looking forward to the episodes. I am really glad that the show is being treated better than NBC. They much would rather help shows like Deal or No Deal.
I dont think the show should continue with out Lawrence or Braff though.

rockgolf Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:36 PM EST

Good news: Scrubs is back with a bang.

Bad news: Ratings are in like a whimper. Well, not quite that bad. Third in it's timeslot, with a 4.1/6 then 3.9/6 rating. (4.1% of all households, 6% of households watching TV). Still better than Fringe and twice the ratings of 90210 & 4 times more popular than Privleged.

Allan Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:13 PM EST

The show has a slightly different visual and the actors look a bit different, but it's still one of the best shows on television. They do the mix of comedy and drama better than anyone.

nyckiii Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 03:02 PM EST

Good going ABC, because Scrubs is one of the funniest, best shows on television and has been for a while. Now you need to bring "Pushing Daisies" back.

TMB Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:55 PM EST

It was great to see Scrubs back at the top of its game. Loved seeing all my old 'friends' back, and everyting had such energy and zing.

John Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:51 PM EST

I would watch Jo, Blair, and Ed, but it should be a spin-off and not called "Scrubs". Jo gave some of the biggest laughs of the episodes (no small feat on Scrubs).

Marnie Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:49 PM EST

Loved both episodes. The second one was seriously emmy worthy. Although Im mad at abc for cancelling Dirty Sexy Money Im glad they bought scrubs.

Chad Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:44 PM EST

When someone disrespects you, you must RECOGNIZE!!! Steak Night was bloody awesome, way more heartfelt and emotional then anything Grey's has tried lately.

If there is anything bad about last night, is that it kicks off Scrubs final season (at least with Zach).

I'd trade 5 seasons of Grey's for 1 brilliant episode of Scrubs!

HELL YEAH

scrubsfan Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:43 PM EST

I am a long time fan and last night's episodes were fantastic. Kudos to ABC for supporting the show the way a network should...

timb Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:41 PM EST

ABC still canceled Pushing Daisies, so they are still tools. By the way, ABC, you might have saved this awesome show, but I STILL remember Sports Night. One step forward, two steps back

SCRUBBIE Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:40 PM EST

I'm a die hard "Scrubs" fan and I was so happy for them to move to ABC, the cast was terrific as always..AWESOME SHOW, people out there, please watch this show..it is amazing

jon Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:40 PM EST

Long time fan of the show, have watched ever episode multiple times....for me it was kind of bittersweet. I don't really like the new interns and it seems like they are really pushing hard for them to be the new characters if it goes on. Also didn't like the look of it, don't know if it was shot differently but it looked kind of grimey, just different then it usually did. The parts with the primary characters were great though, and the janitor will deff be back. It will prob be JD that get's him brought back.

BA Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:38 PM EST

My husband and I kept saying it: The REAL Scrubs is BACK. Woo hoo!!
also loved the emmy bit at the end of the 1st episode-

Kalie Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:21 PM EST

Last night's episodes were great. They were both extremely humorous and touching. I hope Courteney Cox sticks around. She was terrific.

T.L. Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:14 PM EST

Scrubs was great last night! It had gotten too tangentially silly the last two seasons it was on NBC, but now it's as good as ever.

Anonymous Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:11 PM EST

I'm gonna go ahead and sound like an undercover buzz marketer for ABC for a second here... ABC totally rocks for picking up Scrubs. The 2 episodes last night were some of the best we've seen in a long time. And not only that - ABC promoted the crap out of it and the shows writers delivered. I am thrilled.

Sheila Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:11 PM EST

I've been a fan of this show from the beginning and continue to watch it on dvd and comedy central. I never understood why it wasn't as "popular" as I thought it should be! The writing is amazing and the actors' ability to deliver is unrivaled. Thanks to ABC for keeping the show alive! NBC really missed the boat on this one :)

Holly Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:05 PM EST

SCRUBS is back!!! Yeah! I too was a bit nervous, but was immediately put at ease with the episodes. It was great to see Scrubs back it its natural format. I can't wait to see next week. "Steak Night" rocked!

coco Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:01 PM EST

NBC you are idiots!

Heather Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 02:01 PM EST

Suck it NBC. Suck it.
Sorry, but I was perfectly delighted by the episodes. The new interns don't grate, probably since I had very low expectation for them. I wonder how the Janitor comes back. He has to stay. No one hates the Janitor.

Jim Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:48 PM EST

"Scrubs" is one of the best comedies on TV, surely better than "Kath and Kim" so I think NBC made a mistake allowing it to leave. The first episode last night was very funny and the second one was touching. I hope to watch this show for the rest of its run, which I hope extends past one year.

Jacqueline F1 Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:42 PM EST

I agree 100%! I started watching the show 6 months ago in late-night repeats (NBC failed to get me hooked even though I now consider Scrubs my favorite TV show ever). Last night's episodes were fantastic — they both had so much heart and were hilarious. One question though — what's happening with The Janitor???

Pekay Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:37 PM EST

Please tell me that Neil Flynn is coming back!! And dump that new intern - she is not funny. The newbies really need to be more like most of the gang and let Neil Flynn and John C. McGinley mete out the sarcasim and sharp wit.

Gusmo Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:34 PM EST

Definately better than last season- finally in HD! "hey, that's new" was a pretty funny way to start (with JD pointing at the ABC logo)

bo Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:28 PM EST

Last night's second episode was outstanding, and classic, vintage Scrubs. Glynn Turman was great.

Nick Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:25 PM EST

I've missed Scrubs. NBC is ranked 4th in the networks for a reason...passing on great shows like this! Sure beat 2 hours of The Biggest Loser!

G Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:21 PM EST

Last night was what my daughter and I have been waiting for for months! Scrubs is one of the most sincerely funny, and often touching, shows on TV. How it gets ignored in awards season has baffled me for years, so I LOVED the jokes about that last night. I wasn't sure if the move the ABC would keep the show's integrity, but last night proved how great this show is. A SINCERE "thanks" to ABC for rescuing my favorite show from NBC's stupidity. I'm a happy camper!

Elle Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:17 PM EST

The only bad thing I have to mention cuz it bugs me to no end is the LIGHTING or lack thereof. Are we just going overboard with energy efficiency or is it really freaking dark in this hospital?! Someone turn on the lights. It's killing me. Hospitals in real life are super-bright. That's the only thing that needs to be fixed. The rest was superb but I need me some more JD and Elliot face time. That's all.

Judy Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:06 PM EST

Been a Scrubs fan since day 1. So glad ABC picked up a great show and it certainly delivered. Both episodes rocked!

Leiha Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:05 PM EST

I LOVED both episodes last night. I'm so happy the show is back and ABC is giving it the respect it deserves. My favorite part of Scrubs is the relationship between JC and Turk. The best love story on the air. I love them two together! The bumps at the end of the episode had me rolling.

Candace Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 01:03 PM EST

I was a bit nervous at first and the first few mins were a bit touch and go. But between the orderly in the first ep, the intern's chubby-chasing, George, and JD's reference to black skin (it don't crack!) I knew my show was back and that it's going to be a great season!

Dream Out Loud Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:51 PM EST

I hope ABC reads these posts to see how there is practically no negative postings. I realize that the audience is big enough to afford all kinds of opinions, but it seems that there is a general consensus that the first two episodes of the season were tremendous. awesome awesome awesome. One thing they need to do is find a better way to get Kelso back into their lives. Cameos at the coffee shop are not enough for me. That being said, Courtney Cox was great. You can see she has tremendous comic timing.

Ceballos Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 12:50 PM EST

It's simple:

Last night's premire was a return to a more balanced silly/sentimental (not sappy) ratio. (Glynn Thurman was Emmy-worthy in that second episode) The last couple of seasons "Scrubs" had turned into a self-referential cartoon. Don't get me wrong, it was still funny, but nowhere near as good or impactful a show as it was the first three or four seasons.

That being said, I still hope this season is the show's last and that "Scrubs" ends when Zach Braff and Bill Lawrence leave (which they've both said they'll do). The new interns were funny, and they can even spinoff their own show if they want, but just don't call it "Scrubs." "Scrubs" ends when Lawrence and the main gang leave the building.

I've only seen the first episode so far, but I really enjoyed it. I've been disappointed with the show overall since season 5 when it started becoming wackier, but this episode reminded me of why I loved the show to begin with.

They were fantastic episodes last night

I agree with the other posters--the eps of Scrubs last night were some of the best I've seen, particularly the second one with George. It is a truly unique show that can make you laugh and cry all in the same episode. And the music is PHENOMENAL--I discovered Joshua Radin through Scrubs, and he is one of my favorite artists now. And ABC picking up scrubs ALMOST (but not quite) makes up for canceling Pushing Daisies.

Scrubs is back on track!! Great season opener, particularly how it slyly addressed some of the fan criticisms (Elliott's self-absorption of the last season, Dr. Cox's fatigue of being "that guy" who always rants against authority.) And the second ep was one of the most touching but emotionally understated in show history. "My Last Words" was so surprisingly spare, with little of the supporting cast in it and allowing J.D. and Turk to reaffirm one of the best buddy pairings on TV. Awesome how they took a concept going all the way back to early Season One--J.D. grapples with the concept of death after getting close to a patient--and somehow mined new life out of it.

Last night's episodes were hilarious. The bit before the second episode had me rolling on the ground. I'm not a big fan of the new interns, but Jo's story to Mr. Valentine to connect with him was a highlight of the episode for me.

Courteney Cox was freakin hilarious. She should be a major contender for the Guest Emmy. She put all of the other big-name guest stars on sitcoms this season to shame.

I love this show and am so glad that ABC rescued it - NBC has been giving it the shaft for too long and now it can finally shine! Keep 'em coming, Bill!

I just wish ABC was able to put Scrubs at 7:30 Central on Thursday's, so it can CRUSH NBC's awful replacement, Kath & Kim.

1) Both episodes were amazing! Great season premier.. hopefully the ratings will go up
2) Courteney Cox was hilarious, especially when she's suffocating the patient in JD's daydream. I hope she returns after the 3 episodes! (I miss Friends lol)
3) The second episode was very well written and acted, but one thing many people fail to acknowledge is the music used in Scrubs. When I Will Follow You Into The Dark (Death Cab For Cutie) started playing, i almost gasped cause it's my current favourite song, and fit in so well with the theme of the episode.

That second episode absolutely rocked! Loved it. Glad to have the regulars back for one more season to end it right. I'd love to see the show stick around.

wendy Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:46 AM EST

Loving that it is back. Will def watch all season. Hope they don't cancel it. I was so upset last year when they said that it was the last season. Glad its not and thank ABC. You finally got something right this year but I still don't forgive you for cancelling DSM.

Luisa Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:35 AM EST

It's true that, much as I love Scrubs, it did get a bit overly wacky in the past few seasons. But it's always been better than most of the dreck on television. And the two episodes last night just proved it.

The second episode really showed how much heart-tugging warmth a supposedly silly sitcom can bring. I loved George--yes, definitely one of the best guest stars I've seen on TV this year--and it was so sweet to see J.D. and Turk comforting him. Just an "awww" moment that came at just the right time.

Laura Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:34 AM EST

Thought they were great. Especially the second episode. Great mix of funny and touching.

Babs Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:33 AM EST

Oh yeah, I'm on board. Even when episodes have been uneven in the past, it's still a better show than most and certainly than its timeslot competitors. I enjoyed last night's episodes and look forward to more! Is Courteney Cox staying on, or is this a few-episodes guest stint?

Dream Out Loud Wed, Jan 7, 2009 at 11:30 AM EST

I agree with Bill Lawrence that they had to replace some of the silliness with more serious plot lines. The entire 2nd episode felt like a season 1 or 2 show, especially JD and Turk admitting that they were scared of death but couldn't afford to admit it. Great stuff.
