My New Year's TV Resolutions

Jan 1, 2009, 09:45 AM | by Ken Tucker

Categories: Television

Happy new year. For 2009, I resolve to:

1. Get to the bottom of this 'Supernatural' business. So many of you, as I scan EW.com, are into this show, I have clearly been missing something. So I'm gonna watch a batch of this season's already aired episodes, and you'll explain to me why you dig Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles so much in this series, right?

Supernatural_l

2. Give Kathy Griffin another chance, based on her CNN co-hosting with Anderson Cooper. My colleague Mike Bruno provides a thoroughly entertaining summary (and a clip) of the gleeful chaos Griffin wreaked here. I, as you may recall from yesterday's post, had promised not to watch CNN last night, but, flipping the channels, I was stopped dead upon hearing Griffin ask Cooper, "Can I get a pap smear from Dr. Sanjay Gupta?" and was hooked and hooting for about an hour. I used to think of Griffin as an unfunny vulgarian. Now I think she may be a very funny vulgarian: clearly, a Subject For Further Study.

3. Try and keep and open mind about Jimmy Fallon's new talk show, premiering Mar. 2. On the one hand, the guy's webisodes running up to his debut have been thuddingly unfunny. On the other hand, his house band is The Roots. Good taste, but not good humor? I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and watch closely for at least the first week.

What about you? What are your New Year's TV Resolutions? Any shows you plan to watch that you've been avoiding? Any shows you resolve to quit watching?

Yeah, it was Listen 2 This. I liked those, but then they started not being exclusively about music, (they started to include video games & comic books too) http://hardwood-floor.emenace.com/brucehar62/8.html linoleum flooring undefined

Supernatural is awesome!! It combines the best aspects of a cop-buddy show and a good old-fashioned horror anthology. Eric Kripke has done a great job of creating a wonderful mythology while mixing in terrific stand alone episodes. I can't think of show that has mixed mythology episodes and stand alones this well since X-Files. Suprisingly, Supernatural has even had a handfull of hilariously funny episodes.

Isabella Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 08:46 PM EST

Why I watch Supernatural? A few reasons:

1. I'm a girl. Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are freaking hot.
2. It's one of the rare shows that grabs my attention and holds it for the whole episode.
3. It's a show that went from good in the first season to great in the second and third, and is still great in the fourth, which again, is rare.
4. The relationship between the brothers. It feels real, they have great chemistry, and there are some real emotional moments between them.
5. Interesting storylines.

For some serious scripted comedy (and great music) check out LITTLE ISIDORE'S THE TRUTH ABOUT ROCK AND ROLL on youtube. You WILL laugh a lot.

Lindsey Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 07:30 PM EST

Best Show on TV! I Try and Convert Everyone I Know to Get on the Supernatural Train Before it Leaves the Station...Next Season is the Planned "End" to the Series. Whether or Not We'll Ever Get a Spin-off, Movie, or Graphic Novel to Continue, I don't Know. It is, in My Humble Opinion the Ultimate Show. I'm Particular to the Hot Guys, but I'd Be Remiss if I Didn't Say That What Truely Sells it is the Relationship Between the Brothers. The Drama is Always Pitch Perfect, Never Overbearing. For a Show Dealing with the Mythological, it's Also Very Tongue in Cheek. I Recommend Starting From Season 1 to Really Get Into it. I Can't Say Enough Good Things About it!!!

Valerie-from-Columbus Sat, Jan 10, 2009 at 10:09 PM EST

I plan to continue to not follow "Lost", "24", or "Grey's Anatomy".

Also, I will stick to my resolve to not watch reality challenge shows ("The Great Race", "Survivor", etc.)and please don't flame me, I don't say no one else should watch. Those shows are just not for me.

HBO, BBC America, and dvds will be very popular again this winter.

Supernatural is hands down the best show on TV. I haven't been this excited about a series since the x-files. SPN has everything you need. Humor, drama, mythology and hot guys. I started watching Heroes and Lost and hated them both after the first season. But SPN never let me down. It is the best show not being watched. When are Jensen and Jared going to be recognized for the phenomenal work that they do?

Jensenfan Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 12:27 AM EST

Supernatural is one the best shows on tv!!

Ebbtide Thu, Jan 8, 2009 at 02:50 AM EST

I love that you're going to watch Supernatural. It's one of the best shows. <3. Awesome.

"I'm psyched about you trying Supernatural. Though I kinda wish you could try some season 2 or 3 episodes, because I don't think this season is quite as good as they were." -- THIS = definite yes. Season 4 is okay but has been kind of choppy (also, Ruby = ugh).

Glad to see you're gonna give Supernatural a chance. I watch a LOT of TV, and Supernatural is one of the very best, most consistently awesome show around. Really good writing and acting, very creative ways of telling stories, just a high-quality show that deserves a lot more attention than it gets. It really delivers, and rewards the long-term viewer with organic character development and an interesting ongoing mythology.

Joan Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 11:02 AM EST

Hi Ken
I am beyond psyched to see SPN at the top of your New Years TV resolutions! I am a HUGE fan of the show. I have been, since day one. The only other show I obsessed over was 'Alias' but this show holds a special place in my heart. I enjoy this show more than any other because it is intelligent, funny, gut wrenching, thought-provoking and just plain fun to watch. Jensen and Jared are certainly easy on the eyes but this show is so much more than that. Their chemistry is amazing. Thanks for giving Supernatural a shot. Please let us know what you think. And yes, you need to watch the show from the very beginning.

Great #1 ressolution there, Mr. Tucker! SPN (Supernatural) is one of the most engaging sci-fi genre TV shows ever created. Believe us, and yeah try watching it from season 1 to get the backstory of the brothers. Also while majority of the fangirls like Jensen, i especially salute JARED PADALECKI too. He's not only easy on the eyes, but he can also act well his character (love him esp in Season2). I'll finish up season 3 of SPN and then watch season4, that's my resolution!

Leah Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 08:11 AM EST

My own new year's TV resolution would be to find previous episodes of LOST. I have a lot to catch up with one of the best TV drama series ever. And find out the hype behind Mad Men and Chuck. (:

Leah Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 08:05 AM EST

Ken Tucker, don't just watch this season's episodes, ok? Get a SUPERNATURAL DVD right now and watch from season one! You'll know why WE (supernatural fans) love the show (more than just the hotness of the two leads). It's a really cool show.

Eric Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 02:00 AM EST

As for my TV New Year's Resolutions:
The only one I really have is to get caught up on Fringe and Sarah Connor.

Eric Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 01:58 AM EST

I was really against Supernatural at first. To me, it was just a Buffy for boys. Then I bought the first season on a whim for $20 and I was hooked. This season has been the best one so far. January 15th can't come fast enough. I hope you enjoy the show Ken. I also hope that you were able to enjoy Bones finally.

G Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 09:44 AM EST

Love Supernatural and I hope you will too. Everyone who I have introduced to the show has enjoyed it. The writing and acting is top notch.

CW has their priorities in the wrong place. Supernatural is one of the best shows on tv. Hope you enjoy the episodes but remember that Supernatural is big on continuity so you might feel like you're missing something - so go back and watch the first seasons :D

Aerynisis Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 07:39 AM EST

The CW only promote Gossip Girl! It's a shamed cause Supernatural rocks and it doesn't get the attention it should have!
PLus Thursday night is a really difficult time slot!

cassi Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 06:42 AM EST

I know you asked about our new year's TV resolutions but if you ask "why we(fans) love supernatural", the inner Supernatural fan promoter who recognizes a potential new Supernatural viewer must try and suggest his/her favorite episodes. The CW doesn't promote Supernatural that much so fans are used to be on a constant mission to get new people watching! So don't be sad that most people just talk about Supernatural! We just can't help it! ;)
Don't forget to tell us what episodes you watched and why?

Jen Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 06:12 AM EST

Thanks for the Supernatural mention! It's my favorite show, and worth checking out!

Crystal Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 02:10 AM EST

Hey Ken,
Like others, I recommend starting Supernatural with S1 as it has definitely been a solid progression to get to the heavy stuff we are dealing with this season. Personally I think you could skip over most of the sub-par S3, but you do need a bit of backstory for this season I would think. :)

Maggie Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 12:21 AM EST

Why Supernatural? Well, it has brothers who stick together through everything, creepy bad guys who are truly evil, suspense, and humor. And it doesn't hurt that the two leads are wonderful actors who can say more with the quirk of an eyebrow or a shrug than most of the pretty-boy pretenders on TV shows do with their words. Do give it another try--if you can, go back to the second half of the first season. That will give you a better background on the Winchesters outlook on life and how the two brothers depend on each other. And keep bringing us more stories about the actors, too!

rachelelisabeth Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 09:04 PM EST

Yes. Supernatural is worth you figuring it out. It's about family and loyalty, it's well written, well acted and yeah it's action packed and funny too at times.

Kaiulani Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 08:42 PM EST

I have 7 episodes of The Starter Wife on my DVR that I just can't seem to find the energy to watch. I guess I either need to watch them or delete them before Lost, Damages, Burn Notice, The Closer and Battlestar come back.

Sophie Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 06:35 PM EST

I'm so happy to hear that you're going to give Supernatural a chance! This Season 4 is one of the best, I think the angels storyline has added so much to the show. The acting this season has been top notch, especially by Ackles and the new addition of Misha Collins.

Dairwendan Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 06:33 PM EST

I love Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki so much on Supernatural because they absolutely play the heck out of every scene! Humor, drama, tragedy, angst, good, evil, love, hate - the Winchester brothers have been put through it all! And Padalecki and Ackles can do it all!

In addition to this season, you should add the pilot and each season's finale and opener, to unserstand exactly what's going on. Then throw in "Skin" and "Born under A Bad Sign" to see Ackles and Padalecki exhibit some major acting chops.

I'm so happy you're giving Supernatural a try! You won't be disappointed!

hermit Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 05:48 PM EST

Hey Ken,

I'm glad you are giving SN a try. Season 4 may not give you the background of the brothers and their relationship, but I think if you end up liking the show, you will decide on your own whether to view the previous seasons. The fact that you are willing to give the show a try is, for me, great news and I hope you like it. The first three episodes of this new season were phenomenal. But, I can honestly say, the addition of the angels and Dean in the mytharc have really brought new stamina to this show. So, yes, view it from season 4 and then decided on your own whether you want to watch the other seasons. I can say most will not disappoint you.

Good luck and happy viewing

Kate Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 05:37 PM EST

I love Supernatural and IMO season 4 is the best season yet. This show could have kept telling a monster of the week story but it didn't. It's really getting better and better with more mythology and character insight every year!

Mellow Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 05:22 PM EST

I also think season 1 is actually weaker than some of the later seasons. The show really didn't find it's voice until episodes like Skin, Asylum and Faith and really hit it's stride with the last three episodes of the season. Then it started out gangbusters with the first few episodes of season 2. That's when this show went from a guilty pleasure to quality TV for me. Of course it's had ups and downs since then but the first three episodes of this season are the best this show has to offer.

Sean and Mary I agree that you can start watching in season 4 and get drawn in well enough that you will want to go back and watch from the beginning when you have time.

I think the season 4 naysayers are just the samfanatics who resent that Dean is finally getting as much mytharc focus as Sam despite the fact that SPN is getting higher ratings now than it has since it premiered on The WB. They've been pulling this crap anytime SPN is mentioned on the internet. It's kind of pathetic actually.

Mary Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 04:51 PM EST

For someone who's eager to watch Supernatural, then yes, of course, start with season one. But in cases like Mr. Tucker here, I actually think season one, with a few key exceptions, is way too standard of a show to be really impressive. As much as I loved season one, the humor, action and even the emotional depth overall seem pretty mild, especially compared to later seasons. (At least until the finale. That was pure holy freaking cow, when did I forget to breathe?) I do love a lot of the other eps - Faith, Skin, Shadow - I just think season one is too close to what people who have never seen Supernatural would assume it's like.

So even though the biggest payoffs come from knowing what the characters have already been through, I have no problem with someone starting with season 4 (or preferably, season 3's finale). Then go back.

The show's wonderful because it's a about characters I love actively trying to kick ass and be heroes, despite their own troubles. Plus, ghosts!

Sean Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 04:36 PM EST

Been a Supernatural fan since episode1/season 1. Show gets better and better. Don't know what these trolls are talking about with regards to Season 4, as it has been the best of all.

Floyd Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 04:04 PM EST

I'm glad that you are going to give Supernatural a shot. However, I must emphasize what many people have said before me, PLEASE do not start with Season 4. If you watch the first episode of the season with little prior knowledge of the brothers' relationship and experiences, the emotional impact will be lost and very little of it will make sense. I actually saw that exact situation happen. Start with the first season and give it a few episodes to gain momentum. You'll be glad you did.

Heather Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 03:25 PM EST

This season of supernatural has been amazing! But I still suggest starting with season 1.
And as much as I like Jared, Jensen is the reason I watch this show!

Sulaf Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 01:57 PM EST

P.S: SPN fans: please don't jump me for this, it's merely a personal opinion. Us obsessed fans can tolerate some fluctuation in quality without even noticing, because we love the show, but for a new viewer, I don't think season 4 is the right setting to get them hooked. Stick to the DVDs Ken, and I guarantee you'll fall in love with this show just like the rest of us.

Sulaf Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 01:54 PM EST

Hi Ken, being a Supernatural fan from the very beginning I encourage you to watch it, it's brilliant, however, unlike other fans, and speaking from an artistic point of view, I think season 4 is by far the weakest -creatively speaking- so my advice is to start with seasons 1&2, the end of the second season being the best the show has ever done. The acting was phenomenal, especially Jensen Ackles' performance, so were the stories.
I have my reasons for not liking this season so much, mainly the apocalypse storyline and the lack of balance where the writing is concerned, but another reason would be that I don't think Jensen is in his best form. He set some pretty high standards in season 2 What is and What Should Never Be and the finale and he hasn't lived up to that this season. Same goes for Jared, he's doing better but if you wanna see his best performance I recommend In My Time Of Dying from season 2 and Mystery Spot from season 3.

moonshake Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:20 PM EST

Ken, after watching Jimmy Fallon 'singing' on CBC Canada's "Just for Laughs" best of the year comedy special on New Year's Eve, you can safely remove him from your resolutions. He has no talent and his talk show will fail.

Dawn Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:14 PM EST

I agree with the fans who recommend starting from the beginning, as I think this current season would be hard to start out from...but I think it will pass the test! Can't wait for the new episodes to start up again. Our episode recaps will start again too if you want to join in the conversations http://www.milehighhorror.com/

Tigershire Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:08 PM EST

Wow, I almost don't have to give you my 2 cents on how good your decision to give Supernatural a try is. You are overwhelmed with them. But, that in and of itself is says something about the show. So, yes, here is my support to you for giving the show a try. It's everything all those positive comments say it is and then some.

Bonnie Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:06 PM EST

Ken, Middle-aged mom (and fellow Main Liner--go Conestoga!) here to say that I promise Supernatural is the best show you're not watching. The only other shows I'm this committed to are Friday Night Lights and Mad Men, and in my estimation, Supernatural tops them both. It's a show about burden and duty and reluctant heroes who never asked for this mission but nonetheless do what they must to protect the rest of us. It's a deeply compelling drama, yet it still manages to be as funny as Buffy. The family dynamic is as realistic and intriguing as anything I can recall seeing on TV; the boys' father was a borderline psychotic who neglected them horribly, but he's nonetheless a superhero whom they love fiercely. My recommendation: watch a few of the Season 1 episodes before you sample Season 4. This show is about a journey, and you really need to see where they started to appreciate where they're going.

CJ Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:01 PM EST

My resolutions don't have anything to do with TV but if they did:
Try to get more into cable shows because they are kicking network butt in critic's reviews (but I love network TV... Lost, FNL etc). Stay in on Friday to watch Friday Night Lights live on NBC. Start a "Lost" group to come and watch with me every week. I've vowed to not watch 90210. I loved the original and the new series just isn't good, even if Kelly Taylor doesn't look a day older. :)

LindsayW Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 11:21 AM EST

As you can tell, #1 is the favorite choice. As a more mature (cough!) viewer, I watch the CW for only one show - Supernatural. The first ep I watched was Asylum. I thought that this was similar to the horror movies I grew up with. Not a slasher show, but a thriller! I was hooked from there.

You should have a column where you ask any questions you have after watching SPN. We can fill you in!!!!
But definitely watch some eps from each season. This is like an epic novel -- you have to get in at the beginning to get the feel of the character. Only then can you truly appreciate the development of said characters -- they evolve every season. It's the dynamics between the brothers that makes this show the gem it is! Kudos to JA and JP. True chemistry. The emotion is amazing.

Tell us what you think.

Good for you!!

Sharilyn Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 10:45 AM EST

I join the ranks of those who declare Supernatural to be their favorite show; I am a female, age 46, and while I can and DO appreciate the gorgeous physical attributes of the boys, I watch the show for the relationship between Sam and Dean and for the dark, brooding atmosphere and gritty, fringes-of-society backdrop to the series. That combination, along with the steadily advancing mytharc raising the stakes with the brothers' lives and all of humanity makes for an intriguing series. I urge you to watch from the beginning to fully grasp the complex, beautiful layers of the brothers' relationship and the influence their father has had on their lives (you MUST see some of dad John!); seeing ALL the episodes will fully inform you of these phenomenal brothers' heroic journey. And for those who prefer Ackles over Padalecki in the acting category, I take issue with that, as BOTH actors bring marvelous nuances to their individual characters and bring gratifying realism to Sam and Dean weekly.

Celie Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 10:40 AM EST

yes, Supernatural is good, but nothing bets the first season. Except Jared Padalecki's acting. He is not only a pretty boy that one!

He is able to take am down so many oads without having to overdo it. Ackles may be the fav of the fangirls but I find Padalecki so much better; he acts it all out, no need for him to have scene of crying confessions which poor Ackles is ao often doing to tell his story.

Padalecki tells it in every scene with every fiber in his body without having to talk about it. Splendid work from this very young actor.

The brotherhood is the core of the show but it has been suffering this season bt Sam (Padalecki's character) on the back burner. So yes, the show has gotten dumbed down and the Dean-character being chosen by god to save the world has me giggling a bit. But maybe it was needed to bring more fangirls in? It just may push me out if I don't get more on what the series started out as - the brothers fighting evil.

jaime Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 10:35 AM EST

1. Try to at least watch all the DVDs I own that I have never watched and bought on impulse.
2. Try not to rec more than maybe 5 new series this year...cus ugh i already have more than I can handle!
3. Try to keep my DVR inbox clean and caught up on! (Its like having homework sometimes)

lizzie Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 04:43 AM EST

You will LOVE this show. It's just great TV - not Shakespeare, but GREAT TV.

sarah Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 03:56 AM EST

You'll love supernatural! All my favorite shows failed me with their new seasons (heroes, gossip girl, hell even HIMYM with all the filler episodes and nothing else) but this show is just keeps getting better and better! And it doesn't hurt to have two absolutely gorgeous hot guys on it too :D

Maplelump Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:55 AM EST

It's a great show that makes you wonder: is that true? Could it be possible? In season one it was national urban legends with the common thread of finding their father. S2 was all about getting closer to the demon that killed their mother, while keeping on regular hunts to hone their skills. S3 figuring out a way to save each other, which stretched us to have faith that no matter what you stay loyal to family. Jared and Jensen or J2 as they have been dubbed, are what makes this show about the unbelievable, believable all the while bringing the full human spectrum to their characters, therefore, despite what their characters may deal with, relatable. Which is why I've been a loyal viewer since the pilot, not every show can say that.

Tamzen Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:44 AM EST

Oh YES! If you have not caught on to the Supernatural mandness then that ought to be on top of anyone's resolution =D Its a hidden jewel in the Tv industry!

Kathy Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 12:16 AM EST

Resolution #1 is the best that you could ever make! Take it from this dedicated viewer (who is NOT a screaming teenager typically targeted by CW) that Supernatural is excellent in that it offers everything! And the best part... it doesn't take the intelligence of its audience for granted. But I agree with the others who have said it is best to go to the beginning. The roller coaster ride really starts to take off after the first few intro episodes of season one, and it hasn't slowed down since! Thank you for giving this deserving, yet underrated show, the attention it deserves.

Becky Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 11:23 PM EST

I've subscribed to this magazine for 15 years and with 8 weeks to go on my current subscription, was considering letting it expire due to the excessive coverage of Gossip Girl and near complete lack of Supernatural coverage. A recent article in the print version talked all about declining viewership across all the networks without mentioning this amazing little show that has been gaining viewers in it's fourth season. Thank you for resolving to give it a shot. You've saved this subscriber for at least another year. And you really won't be sorry.

Sophy Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 10:52 PM EST

My resolution is to watch all my recorded programs as soon as possible after they air in order to leave room on my DVR for an entire season of Supernatural in HD.

It's not necessary to watch earlier seasons in order to understand this season, but watching last year's finale "Lazarus Rising" would give you a good basic understanding of the main characters' personalities and motivation. It also sets up this season's "Big Bad" and mythology arc.

Ana Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 10:51 PM EST

Hey, have fun watching Supernatural! I got into it around the middle of season one, and was hooked after three episodes (Faith first, then went back to watch Asylum and Scarecrow). It's hard to say why the show is so addictive... I think it's kind of the same appeal that old shows like Cheyenne or Maverick had, where the protagonist rides into town, gets caught up in events, saves some people, and moves on to the next place. The protagonists are haunted but entertaining drifters (Dean in particular has a great mix of joie de vivre, deep-rooted history that makes him who he is, and an actor who can show the different levels effectively), and the weekly stories range from action-y to humorous to deeply affecting. It's just got something that hooks into you and makes you excited for next week (especially as the momentum really kicks in around the middle of season one). I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

dink Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 10:18 PM EST

I love your number 1 resolution, Ken!

My New Year's tv resolution? To stop guffawing (out loud) every time someone suggests that painted, wax-doll doctors and (not so) disparate houseflies are good tv.

"Supernatural" has it ALL...loves lost, razed anatomy, desperate spouse strife, and crime scheme intervention--all built around the story of two brothers and one awesome Metallicar.

I agree with the others, though. As with all great stories, you must GO TO THE BEGINNING.

Go. Now.

Lila Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 10:12 PM EST

Ahhhhhh, "Wishful Thinking." I love bipolar, suicidal porn loving teddy bears. :D All hail Mr. Edlund.

Linda Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 09:25 PM EST

I love Supernatural. Both Jensen and Jared are good actors who have great chemistry together, but for me, the strength of the show lies with the talent of Jensen Ackles. I think Jensen is one of the best actors on television today. He does a fantastic job in portraying all of the beautiful and complex layers of Dean Winchester. I think in the hands of a lesser actor, Dean would have been the stereotypical "bad boy" character, but in Jensen's talented hands, Dean became this wonderfully complex and rich (funny yet heartbreaking) character. He really carries the majority of the emotional weight of the show (for me). This season has been amazing and Jensen has knocked it out of the park every single episode (Jensen's performance in that last scene in Heaven and Hell absolutely killed me!). The strength of the show is the brothers and their relationship. As the seasons progress, the mythology of the show becomes more relevant and I think the show has really hit it's stride this season.

Oh and Brad, that episode you're referring to is "Wishful Thinking." It was brilliant! Supernatural does a great job balancing the humor with the drama.

Yaaay, Ken!! You can pick up Supernatural with S4, but you'll be missing a treat if you don't watch from the beginning. Watch a few episodes from S1 if you have time -- Pilot, Skin, Asylum, Home, Scarecrow, Shadow, Salvation and Devil's Trap.
Happy New Year!!

MCM Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 09:00 PM EST

Please, take the word of another middle-ager (gosh, such an unseemly phrase, I actually prefer "new 20'er :D) whose ONLY must-see-TV is Supernatural. I won't rehash previous comments but I assure you that, once you've watched several episodes you'll understand all the buzz. As you may already be aware as well, this series, despite being on the CW, appeals to an exceptionally wide age range. Thank you for adding this series to your new year's TV resolution list, and I look forward to reading your take on it very soon. Happy New Year! :D

Kayla Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 08:30 PM EST

Im so happy that u are giving Supernatural a chance. I love this show soooooooo much, it is the best show on tv. Jensen and Jared are such great actors that the thing i think you will like the most is that the two of them have such a great chemistry together that it almost like Sam and Dean are real people not just characters. I think you should start watching the show from the beginning. You will be hooked after the first episode.
P.S. You gotta watch Season 2's finale parts 1 and 2. I think those are 2 of the best episodes

Mousitsa Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 08:13 PM EST

Mr. Tucker, time spent on Supernatural will be worth every minute, but I highly recommend you start from the beginning to really see the progression (although this season has been great as well). It is part X-Files, Route 66 & Twilight Zone as two brothers crisscross the country in their ’67 Chevy Impala to hunt demons & all forms of supernatural things in order to save people. It is unique in that all its stories are based on existing myths, lore, & urban legends. It is excellently written & acted, and features equal shares of drama, scares, suspense, horror, & comedy, brilliantly enhanced by a classic rock soundtrack. But the heart & soul of it all is the best brother relationship ever to be presented, with I-would-die-for-you family dynamics being an integral focal point. The chemistry between the on-screen brothers is phenomenal because the two handsome lead actors are very good friends in real life as well and two of the nicest guys in Hollywood. Thank you for giving it a chance!

Tash Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 08:08 PM EST

I agree with the many comments about the brothers relationship being the main draw for me when it comes to watching supernatural. Yes the guys are gorgeous but that is secondary to the awesome chemistry they share and their wonderfully real relationship. The acting is exceptional from both actors and the writing is usually good. Jared Padalecki in particular makes me tune in every week, he is a wonderfully subtle actor who makes Sam Winchester a character I completely care about and find utterly fascinating. The show has it all though with action, drama, real emotion and lots of humor.

zuki Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 07:43 PM EST

You can't just watch a few episodes of this season to truly appreciate this show. Watch the Pilot, Skin, Home, Asylum, Scarecrow, and especially Faith, Something Wicked and Devil's Trap (all from season 1) to understand the relationship between Dean and Sam and then you will understand the fervent fandom for this show. And Jensen Ackles should have been given an Emmy for his work in In My Time of Dying and What Is and What Should Never Be (season 2). Supernatural shows complex relationships and all the underlying tension that goes with that and does it in a funny, scary and heartwrenching way that is closer to real-life than anything else on tv right now, despite the fact that it is a Sci-Fi genre show.

Mariel Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 07:19 PM EST

My new years TV resolution is to watch less mediocre television in the coming year. For some reason almost every show has disappointed me this year but I hung in there anyway and never really got the pay-off I was looking for. T:SCC, DSM, Heroes and GA all seemed to have lost their way to varying degrees. One show though that didn't disappoint was Supernatural. In fact it's better this year than it's ever been. So yeah Ken, I would definitely give it a chance. It's got it's ups and downs and it's certainly not the most consistently well-written show on TV. But it really does suck you in...or perhaps I should say Ackles' Dean Winchester makes you care about the character despite yourself. As others have said, the chemistry between the two leads is stellar but for me, Ackles is the main draw since he has awesome chemistry with everyone, especially grizzly old Bobby and Castiel, the shiny new warrior angel who rescued him from Hell. It's all great fun despite the rather annoying fandom.

Alice Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 07:14 PM EST

Thank you for giving Supernatural a chance. This show is really underrated. I watch a lot of tv shows, but if someone told me i had to make a choice and only watch one, then i'll definitely give them up and keep supernatural, it's so riveting.

Christine Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 07:07 PM EST

I am so glad you've decided to give Supernatural a go. I didn't have cable for 5 years and was perfectly happy to catch stuff on dvd till I watched this one. I saw the season 1 finale 2 weeks before the premiere of S2. Theres no way I could wait till the following year to see what happened next. While admittedly the two leads are gourgous that is simply a footnote to this series. The storylines and continuing arc involving the brothers is must see tv. Jensen consistently knocks it out of the park with his acting. The chemistry between these two leading men is unmatched. You believe in these characters and their fight and the spectrum of emotions they take you through every week is phenemonal.

Fallon Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 06:18 PM EST

And my New Year's Resolution is to get into Chuck and The Wire, which my parents wouldn't let me get into when it originally aired (I was too young) and by the time I could watch I just couldn't catch up - but it's about my city and my town and what goes on here and I've heard how mind-blowing the writing is, and so I really want to watch it for myself and be astounded.

Fallon Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 06:15 PM EST

I'm excited that you're going to try to get into Supernatural!! It's probably the most underrated show on television, I kid you not. While the jaw-dropping good looks of Padalecki and Ackles are an added bonus, I watch the show for the heart-wrenching dynamic between the two brothers, and the relationships they have with other recurring characters, such as the stand-in father figure of Bobby. The writing is clever and well thought out, the themes prevalent and question-raising, morally challenging, religiously philosophical and mature. I love this show because it has substance, heart, and the chemistry alone between Jensen and Jared is outstanding - both are phenomenally talented and really bring to lief these characters Sam and Dean Winchester to whom I've become hopelessly attached.

And whoever said Jared couldn't act - Born Under a Bad Sign. If you can watch that episode and dismiss his talent, then I fear for your sanity, my friend.

Brad Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 06:09 PM EST

I remember an episode last year where wishes were being granted and the two of them open a door into a room where, believe it or not, a giant teddy bear was crying his eyes out. The two of them were speechless. A, the scene reminded me of Ghostbusters and B, the show showed that they could not only be scary, it could also provide thought out humor. The show is a great alternative to the overrated and failing Grey's Anatony. Izzie having sex with a ghost? Please.

Charstin Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 06:07 PM EST

Supernatural is my #1 must-see show every week. If I could only watch one show per week, it would be Supernatural. (there are lots of other shows that I really enjoy ... but I would give them all up if I had to make a choice).

For me, part of the hook of the show is the "journey" that the brothers are on .. and I don't mean the part where they're driving cross-country in the Impala .. I really mean in the overall sense of everything we've seen in the these last 4 years (plus the flashbacks to their youth, their parents etc) and to whereever the brothers will ultimately "end up." I am truly along for the ride. And, although I realize the show's "supernatural" premise is not reality .. Sam and Dean always seem VERY real (as if they're people, not "just" characters).
And I feel the need to mention that over the years the show has also cast (more often than not) truly wonderful actors/actresses in guest and recurring roles.

cassi Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 05:47 PM EST

Thanks for giving Supernatural a chance! I don't think 1000 characters are enough to describe why Supernatural is so awesome. For me, it's a great mix of drama, comedy, gore, family and the coolest car ever - the Impala. If you really want to give Supernatural a chance, at least try watching the Pilot, Devil's trap, In my time of dying, Born under a bad sign, All hells breaks loose, Mystery Spot, A very Supernatural Christmas, No rest for the wicked and Lazarus rising! Sure Jensen and Jared don't look bad but it's the relationship of the brothers which keeps Supernatural alive, everything else is nice and entertaining but not necessary!
I will give Dollhouse and Dexter a chance!
PS: Only two weeks until thursday is awesome again!!!!!

Mindy Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 05:13 PM EST

Well Ken, I truly applaud your first resolution. Supernatural is my absolute favorite show period. It's seriously one of the best shows on television. Not only is Supernatural consistently cleverly well written (something I can't say as far as Heroes is concerned) but Jared & Jensen are phenomenal actors. Their tv relationship as brothers is incredibly believable because of the excellent chemistry between the two of them & is the heart & soul of the show. Plus a lot of the mythology & folklore is very fascinating & engaging!

lila Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 04:56 PM EST

Rocksnroses, I have been *very* impressed with Jared's growth as an actor from season one through season four. His improvement has been phenomenal. He doesn't receive enough credit for his work and yes, he's strikingly handsome. He isn't "cute" like the teen idols from Gossip Girl. I prefer leads who look and act like men as opposed to boys. Supernatural delivers.

rocksnroses Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 04:31 PM EST

I am very happy you'll give Supernatural a chance. I, too am a middle aged woman enthralled by the storylines and dynamic between the TWO stars. Jensen is awesome, but Jared consistently knocks it out of the park. And as far as looks? Tall, dark and handsome Jared. It's sad some people have to bash him.

Lila Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 04:20 PM EST

You won't be wasting your time getting to the bottom of this Supernatural business, Mr. Tucker. It's not a "chick" show, contrary to what you may have heard. It's pretty far from it. I'm a middle aged woman and I'm into it. Needless to say, I'm not interested in any other of the CW's banal teen fare. Supernatural, however, is in a different league. Great idea for a show; Eric Kripke found lightning in a bottle with the casting of Padalecki and Ackles. You can't manufacture chemistry like that or fake such heartfelt emotional depth. From a technical standpoint, Mad Men and Dexter are better shows, but Supernatural's emotional depth, humor, and character interaction is second to none. It's the best thing going on network television. It really is.

jools Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 04:13 PM EST

Some more stuff that I know the men in my life really like about the show - two brothers on a road trip in a kick ass car blasting bad guys. there also used to be some pretty bad ass music - but unfortunately SN's budget doesn't allow for much of that anymore CW seems to throw all their money into designer cloths for GG and advertising the hell out of that :(

GreenWoman Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 04:10 PM EST

It's about friendship and family. Sam and Dean as brothers, their troubled relationship with their father, their strong bond with their surrogate father Bobby Singer...these bonds are the foundation for my interest in the series. The extended complex reationships between the core characters and the other recurring characters...this season, especially, with the angels, but also with their childhood associations and other characters such as the Trickster, are intriguing. And finally, the secret war which the two brothers fight for high stakes and mostly thanklessly, and the life they lead on the edge of the society they protect...those factors I find extremely intriguing and moving. For *me*, the attraction of the show is the relationships, the strong values and the way in which those values are tested, as are the inner strengths and weaknesses of the main characters. That's what the center of the show is for me...and the center, so far, has and can hold.

Jools Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 04:07 PM EST

The main leads are pretty easy on the eye, but there is so much more to this show, in fact the 'Scary just got sexy' adds we had in the UK actually preventd me watching when the series first came out. The relationship the Winchesters have is probably the best on tv anywhere. Whilst the writers don't always get everything right all the time, they really do try to give us everything, drama that might have you on the edge of your seat, angst that might make you weep (although probably not you personally :P), humour that might make you lol a huge well established myth arc and lots of stand alones for the casual viewers.

Cream will always rise to the top. SN has been stuck on CW in a terrible timeslot, no promotion whatsoever and it still out performs the CW's darlings week on week. I hope you get it Mr Tucker and can show SN a little love now and again.

Alison Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 03:43 PM EST

Supernatural has me watching each week because of the terrifc chemistry between Jared & Jensen and because I care about Sam & Dean as if they were living, breathing people. The writers and actors have brought these characters to life in such a way that it *matters* to me whether Sam & Dean defeat evil, that their bond remain intact and that they go down fighting. There isn't another show out there that affects me this way.

Heather Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 03:31 PM EST

I agree with the comments above. Unlike other shows with their pretties, these pretties can act. It's scarily underrated. I just jumped on the fangirl wagon too. The storylines are consistently good in quality and the dialouge is witty. In addition, unlike other shows, their story arcs make sense and when they kill a charcter and bring them back to life, there IS a purpose. It has a sweeping mythology that makes sense and is easy to follow.

There's also some singing.

Francesca Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 02:27 PM EST

Congratulations for jumping into Supernatural this year.

It's truly a wonderful experience to watch every week. The story and the characters the crew of Supernatural have created blows my mind.

Just watching one episode one can tell how much devotion the actors, writers, special-effects crew, make-up effects, camera, etc. just everyone has for this show.

Jensen and Jared breathe life into their characters and give it all.

I have gotten some people into Supernatural and they all have fallen in love with the story, characters, the cinematography, etc.

I hope you find out why we all love Jared and Jensen to pieces on your own when you watch some episodes. ~.o

Yoga_Girl Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 02:24 PM EST

The show stays original and scary, which is impressive given that much of the material comes from urban legends, and spooky wives tales. I think adding the angels this year was genius. While they certain have plenty of cute chicks come and go... thank heaven for the always handsome duo...who have a healthy sibling dynamic. The new angel Castiel continues their line of talented and attractive casting! Does any other show have such hot men, who can actually act? (I do agree they are woefully under-utilizing Sam this year). I think this show appeals evenly to both sexes...which shows rarely do.

CandyMaize Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 01:32 PM EST

Ken, I'm happy to hear you're planning on giving 'Supernatural' a try. Just recently I happened to get a friend hooked, plus her husband AND her mother!

Jared & Jensen have such great chemistry, and are both really good actors. Yes, I admit it, they're good-looking guys .. but really, what keeps me watching is the acting and the writing/storylines. (There's no way I would still be watching the show, or own all 3 seasons of the show on DVD, if the only thing the show had going for it was "the pretty.")

LoA Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 01:32 PM EST

Supernatural may not have the most viewers but they're the MOST loyal and dedicated. It's been a long slog but the word's getting out there and the boys are here to stay. I think 75% of people who watch will say they do it for Jensen/Dean and I'm one of them but nevertheless it's still the best show ever written!!! Yay!!

Corinne Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 01:05 PM EST

And, I love Pam's comments about Jensen lol.

Corinne Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 01:04 PM EST

Well, I dig Jensen, Jared not so much.

I've got nothing against the guy, he just can't act, and Sam is sucking assp this season (not that he was a ball of fun the prior seasons either).

Jensen/Dean? Is basically wow to me, and the reason I have to watch again and again. The stories can be pretty great too.

Kathy B Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 12:40 PM EST

I know a lot of people who have started watching Supernatural this year. Season 4 has been awesome.

Rock Salt Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 11:57 AM EST

Supernatural rocks dude! It is the best show on TV.... Way way way better than Lost and Heroes etc.. Enjoy!!

Em Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 11:56 AM EST

We won't have to tell you why we like the stars of Supernatural. You'll get it yourself once you watch the show!

My resolution is to give 24 another chance. However, a four-hour premier night? Meh. Sure, they had the momentum for that sort of thing years ago, but that's a LOT to ask of us at this point in our relationship.

Sarah Thu, Jan 1, 2009 at 11:30 AM EST

Supernatural is a seriously under-rated show. The acting is fantastic and the writing is excellent. Thanks for finally giving the show a chance. You won't be disappointed. I can honestly say its the only thing worth watching these days!
