2009's New TV Shows I Want To Watch

Jan 3, 2009, 09:13 AM | by Ken Tucker

Categories: Television

Coming out of a few weeks of mostly reruns, my appetite for new shows is ravenous. Here's a quick run-down of some brand-new series premiering over the next few months, roughly in the order of my curiosity about them.

1. Dollhouse (Fox, premiering Feb. 13) Joss Whedon in the (doll)house! With Buffy's Eliza Dushku as part of a group of humans whose personality is erased and imprinted with a new one each time she goes on a new mission for a client. Sheesh, it sounds complicated, doesn't it? But there's no one I'd trust more to guide me into a tricky TV series than creator-producer-writer Whedon. Bring on the mind-bending...

2. Castle (ABC, premiering Mar. 9) Another Whedon alum--Nathan Fillion, from the great cult series Firefly--stars as a mystery-writer turned mystery-solver. Could be a lot of wry fun, or could be Murder, He Wrote; can't wait to find out.

3. Lie To Me (Fox, premiering Jan. 21) Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction) stars as a scientist who specializes in reading people's faces and body language to determine whether they're telling the truth. He uses his ability to help cops solve crimes. I've seen this pilot, and suspect Fox is right in thinking it's got itself a possible big hit. Roth is charmingly sardonic, and Kelli Williams, who's kept herself pretty hidden since co-starring in David E. Kelley's The Practice, radiates a smart glow.

4. Cupid (ABC, premiering Mar. 14) A guy claims to be the earthly manifestation of the Roman love-god Cupid (Will & Grace's Bobby Cavanale), and tries to match up people destined for each other. Some folks think he's crazy--including co-star Sarah Paulson (Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip) as his psychiatrist. If this show sounds familiar, it's because its creator, Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars) did a show a decade ago called Cupid starring Jeremy Piven in the title role. Same premise. It bombed. Maybe this concept's time has come now?

5. Kings (NBC, premieres Mar. 19) I'll be honest: Tell me this is about a mythical kingdom of kings and princes but set in the present-day, and I'll give you a "Get outta here!" But tell me that the king is played by Deadwood's Ian McShane, and involves a lot of ruthless plotting, and I'll be in front of my TV, hoping it is good and worthy of the great McShane.

Which of these new shows are you looking forward to?

Laurel Mon, Jun 1, 2009 at 11:32 PM EST

LOVE lie to me everyone loves a male lead who is . . . a little less than welcoming and that is why i love this show not to mention i can tell when my other is lying now =] love the show lighterman is endearing kinda reminds me of a more human house the episode about the rapist OH MY amazing i had a feeling i knew who it was when we were first introduced to him which is odd but i think i watched the episodes too close together and well kinda felt like i was a natural but yeah ok i need a life but seriously who else thought that the rapist was FOXY!! i felt a little bad watching the show then remembered hes just an actor and i really would not mind spending a few days with him MMMM!

Quinnon Sun, May 3, 2009 at 05:56 PM EST

Cupid - Seriously? damn, this is pretty weak for love oriented tv themed show, this is going to be so repetative ever week, girl meets boy, yadda yadda yadda, they hook up THE END. Pssssst this is why Valentine was axed and that had 5 gods in it and had depth compared to this, that managed 5 episodes before it was axed good luck, you have 2 more to go before viewing figures really bottom out on this show and thats when you regret thinking you could make the concept of Valentine a better one by reinventing it in the guise of Cupid.

Quinnon Sun, May 3, 2009 at 05:48 PM EST

Lie To Me - Quick, snappy, factual, original and worth 43 minutes of my week every week, this show offers true insightful facts about how some crimes are solved in todays world, the storylines are very varied and unexpected due to originality, its always nice to be rewarded with a little inteligent viewing and for a change FOX has taken longevity of a tv show into mind, its quality so far is hidding much more involved storylines and secrets and this makes it a winner for the network and us, keep it fresh without looking towards other program storylines and borrowing them as this is the done thing with ever cop show and medical drama these days, i hope to see much more in time to come from this show.

Quinnon Sun, May 3, 2009 at 05:40 PM EST

Castle - Okay lets call this "Murder HE Wrote" and it is, but with a more modern look it's wittier and the casting isn't short in talent making this just workable for a time, the show does lack originality and makes the viewers out to be idiots with very simple crimes, answers and predictable outcomes, i cannot help but know who the killer is and how they are to be caught and with what evidence and means each episode, and some 40 minutes later they have always managed to pull off what i was thinking at the beggining of the show, it makes the investigators look stupid and that criminals walk away from the simpliest of solvable crimes (if it wasnt for the heroic castles powers of deduction) i feel this has the Fillian curse attached too, his last show managed 6 episodes and was axed, firefly axed after 2 series and i see no good life span for "Murder HE Wrote" here.

Quinnon Sun, May 3, 2009 at 05:31 PM EST

The Dollhouse - Very good concept, modern, believable and has legs for several series to come, the casting is complimentary bringing in some new faces who i'm sure will bounce around the tv circuit of would be killers, victims and the like on CSI/Criminal minds ect, but already viscious rumours say this is to be shelfed too, if Alias can last 5 series with the same episode style every week (she NEARLY gets caught and dosent by 1 second to spare/ has a new disguise on that makes her look the same, and can beat up a 300lb man with her 95lb killer skills) that should be run for 3 series at least, with life style changes it takes a season or two at least now-a-days for any show to gain cult status and this would be yet another let down for fans already if it was to be axed.

Quinnon Sun, May 3, 2009 at 05:21 PM EST

Shame but they have AXED KINGS already after 6 aired episodes, its back in july for at least one more episode and they havent decided yet if they will ever air the full 13 episodes made, i like the whole "biblical King David of Israel" modernisation, but it is clear the tv network is doing its best to axe it with poor time slots so it has no viewers to justify its end, shame on you NBC

Mikey Wed, Apr 8, 2009 at 05:53 PM EST

Ok Kings started out strong but it is losing my interest rather quickly. The first 2 episodes were awesome.. 3rd was pretty weak and this last episode was alright. It needs to spice things up a bit. The princess and david should DO IT!!!

Heather Sat, Apr 4, 2009 at 06:52 PM EST

LOVE Dollhouse and I'm really enjoying Castle... so of course these means they will get cancelled. PLEASE don't cancel these shows. Give them at least 3 seasons each.

Teresa Sun, Mar 8, 2009 at 03:09 PM EST

Yep, some sounds good, which means if they are they will be cancelled either in year one or at the start of yera two..why watch??

Big D Tue, Jan 20, 2009 at 07:40 PM EST

I've been eagerly anticipating Dollhouse for what must be a year now! I am a huge Joss Whedon fan and a huge Eliza Dushku fan. Castle sounds like it could be really cool and I like Nathan Fillion. I am interseted enough in Lie to Me, Kings and Cupid to take a look. So far United States of Tara, Nurse Jackie and Trust Me aren't looking too enticing to me.

arrg Wed, Jan 14, 2009 at 04:29 AM EST

trust nuttin', quit TV, loyal viewers trashed with shows canned with no end.

Edward Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 01:57 PM EST

None, are there going to be any African American sitcoms coming out this year other then on BET.

Krystyne20 Fri, Jan 9, 2009 at 12:12 PM EST

Kass -- I agree with you about The Unusuals. Jeremy Renner is awesome! I can't wait for this show to start.

jcpdiesel21 Tue, Jan 6, 2009 at 12:55 PM EST

I'm definitely checking out Cupid due to the cute and charming looking ads, Castle due to Nathan Fillon, and The Unusuals because of Amber Tamblyn and Jeremy Renner. Dollhouse? Whatever.

Michael Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 04:22 PM EST

Castle....... possibly............. CANT WAIT FOR FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS.... 11 DAYS!!!!

daria Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 07:58 AM EST

1. Dollhouse
2. Castle

I'll probably gonna watch all the new pilots, but I already know I will love these two shows :)

Alan Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 02:46 AM EST

"Lie To Me" sounds interesting, but I think it will struggle to find an audience competing against Lost and Criminal Minds.

Kass Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 10:38 PM EST

The Unusuals is the only new show I'll be watching this season. Jeremy Renner and Harold Perrineau from 28 Weeks Later together again makes me happy. Plus, it's about time people see what they've been missing in a great actor like Jeremy Renner.

Nix Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 08:40 PM EST

That line about Whedon's genius reminds me of the premise of Maugham's The Moon and Sixpence about an artist loosely based on Gauguin: if you know a guy is a genius, how much crap and pain will you tolerate from him? Apparently a lot.

tdraicer Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 08:32 PM EST

I agree with whoever (whomever?) it was that said, "There are two kinds of people; those that think Joss Whedon is a genius and those that are mistaken." So Dollhouse for me.

RT Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 06:43 PM EST

The heck with the new shows. Damages 2nd season all the way!!!

Kathy B Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 01:41 PM EST

Dollhouse & Castle.

downtown diva Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 12:25 PM EST

The first Cupid was canceled too soon, I think. I'll watch or record this one even though Jeremy Piven won't be in it, but I do have concerns about the timing. Why put on a show about matchmaking called Cupid exactly a month AFTER Valentine's Day? And it won't have a very long run of original eps this season with finales generally coming two months later. Maybe it's on a trial basis, and if it succeeds this time around could get a full season in the fall?

Stage Left Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 12:04 PM EST

I really love Lisa De Moras (TV Critic) of The Washington Post comment about Dollhouse:
(Article: “Fox’s Fall was a Flop So What’s Plan B? Starts with an ‘A’ of Course” dated 12-28-08)

“They are shows like Josh Whedon’s new “Dollhouse”. The one-hour drama is about a really hot chick who's part of an underground group and who each week has her personality wiped out at a secret facility called the Dollhouse, so she can, for money, assume another personality to help out the wealthy, the powerful and the well-connected. And have a lot of sex. Where I come from, we called them "hookers." Whatever.”

Priceless!

Corey Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 11:14 AM EST

"Kings" sounds sort of cool but the show I am most interested in you did not list here and I am wondering if it is because you have seen a pilot or preview episode but that is "Harper's Island," where a wedding gathering on an island turns tragic as each week a different guest is murdered.

Robert Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 10:38 AM EST

I haven't looked forward to a show in a long, long time the way I'm looking forward to DOLLHOUSE. The last time I was this excited was PUSHING DAISIES (I'm still crushed by its cancellation) and before that LOST.

joe Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 09:50 AM EST

Dirty sexy money , Swingtown oh wait there cancelled not getting hooked on new shows i just stick with Lost

Steve Ungrey Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 07:32 AM EST

Well, I do know that one of the early Cupid episodes features Aubrey Dollar from Women's Murder Club as a guest, so I'll definitely tune in to that one. Otherwise, I echo all the comments on the board about ABC: Don't get too invested in Cupid, Castle or The Unusuals, because ABC will have them removed from the schedule by May.

ABC execs, do you get the feeling people are pissed at you? lol

T.T Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 04:50 AM EST

the untitled amy poehler show and dollhouse

Nate Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 02:49 AM EST

Right there with you Havlin. Cannot wait to see tahmoh in Dollhouse. The Friday timeslot is irking me though. That is usually not a good slot at all. Hope it is good and if it is good it can find the viewers to stay alive.

Jess Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 02:13 AM EST

I'm waiting for NBC's Chuck to return in February. In 3D! I pray Casey's big strong arms come out of the screen to give me an imaginary hug!

:-)

Um...what were we talking about? **!

Havlin Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 01:29 AM EST

Do I have time to watch any more TV shows? No. Will I watch Dollhouse religiously for the sole reason that Tahmoh Penikett is in it? Absofrakkinglutely. So say we all!

matt Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 01:05 AM EST

I'd watch Kelli Williams in anything! She was awesome on The Practice...excellent actress!

Alan of Montreal Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 12:57 AM EST

I find it really weird that Cupid is coming back. I guess there is a precedent for bringing shows back from the dead (e.g., Battlestar Galactica), but usually such shows are re-visioned. With Cupid, it sounds like the exact same show as its predecessor, only with Bobby Cannavale. How many shows get a 2nd shot like that?

Ginger Sams Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 12:14 AM EST

King's, Castle and Lie to Me - cause I want to pick up some tips (on how to spot a liar) I'm also looking forward to Heroes, the Office and that weird show from VH1 on celebrity teen has beens.

Monica242 Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 11:46 PM EST

I'm a *huge* Joss Whedon fan, but I don't really like Eliza Dushku and I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority when I say that I don't think she can act as anyone that's not Faith.

That being said, I was willing to give it a shot until I saw the timeslot. Sorry, Joss, you lose to The Office and Supernatural. I'll catch you on the flipside.

Elaine Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 10:53 PM EST

I am hooked on anything Joss does so Dollhouse is for me. I did not like "Faith" in Buffy, so bought Tru Calling and loved it, now I am really looking forward to the show. In fact I will check out the other 4 as well, but Burn Notice, The Closer and reruns of MOONLIGHT are already set on the DVR. I will never watch a new series on CBS after they axed Moonlight that won its time slot every week.

Michelle Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 10:47 PM EST

I've been waiting for Dollhouse for months, so I'm there for that. I'm also excited for Castle. Love Nathan! None of the others sounds interesting to me, but it's cool LOST is back!

Nisha Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 10:26 PM EST

Hands down... Dollhouse! Anything by Whedon will pique my curiosity. Dushku? Icing on the cake. Speaking of which... brings me to Castle. Nathan Fillion. I WILL be there!

rachelelisabeth Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 10:13 PM EST

The Original Cupid was MAGIC. M A G I C magic. I've never seen Entourage but when I started reading all the accolades Piven was getting for it, I was thinking. DUH. Probably 100 % deserving because he was awesome as Cupid.

Very worried for the re-make but will check it out as I loved the original. Though Cannavale who I do like has HUGE shoes to fill.

matt2 Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 09:59 PM EST

Well, I'm not a person who's easily impressed by the names of the stars appearing in a show and neither do I care about the tv station. Therefore, solely based on the brief synopsis' given for each show, I will at least check out Castle and Kings. Dollhouse sounds like an even more complicated version of My Own Worst Enemy and that didn't fly this fall. Lie To Me is more of The Mentalist and one is enough. Cupid sounds like an updated version of Touched By An Angel. Actually, that use to be my favorite Sunday night show. I'll give that a look as well.

Crystal Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 09:51 PM EST

Trust Me looks interesting for sure, and Castle sounds intriguing of these. Really it's all about Lost and Kyle XY starting their seasons for me, and hoping ABC shows the last eps of PD sometime...

Kacey Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 09:46 PM EST

I am looking forward to the returns of Lost & 24. I am not going to invest my time or energy with anything new. After the excellent show Pushing Daisies was cancelled, I decided that it's not worth my time or effort to watch any new shows. They'll probably just be cancelled. If it stands up to the very numbers oriented network, I can watch the first couple seasons on DVD & then decide if I want to invest my time to watch it "live".

mariah Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 09:18 PM EST

are you kidding??? now that pushing daises id off I'll probably either watch nothing or some of the old stand bys like: CSI, BSG, LOST, Heroes & maybe dollhouse & fringe-DONE.

Jon Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 09:01 PM EST

Sorry Cupid, but Sarah Paulson grates my nerves. Anything she's in, I tend to tune out.

donner Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 08:56 PM EST

I thought Lie To Me looked cool, and I like Tim Roth...I'm wary to get too caught up in ANY new show - cause we all see how quickly they are axed, no matter how much we love them...Pushing Daisies, buh-bye...

Z Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 08:45 PM EST

I'm onboard for 'Kings'. Sounds interesting and has Ian McShane.

Michelle Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 07:57 PM EST

This level of tv anticipation usually comes in the Fall for me. This year I'm all about the mid-seasons. Can't wait for "Dollhouse" and "Cupid 2.0." Whedon and Thomas are tv gods in my book, so yeah... a little excited. Also excited about "United States of Tara."

CandyMaize Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 07:55 PM EST

I'm right there with you regarding 'Dollhouse,' 'Castle' and 'Kings.' And, I'd like to add that I'm looking forward to checking out 'Harper's Island' when it premieres (Jim Beaver, another 'Deadwood' alum is in it .. LOVED 'Deadwood'!!! Plus, I have to say .. Jim does a great job portraying the recurring character of Bobby Singer on 'Supernatural'). And I'm sure I'm missing some other show that will be premiering in the first half of 2009 that I plan to give a shot.

ZS Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 07:24 PM EST

Damages for sure! its one of the best gritty, legal thrillers on the tv and i am hooked to it.. also United States of Tara looks really interesting, especially with Toni Colllette, Diablo Cody, and Steven Speilburg all on board

chop Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 06:54 PM EST

I'll watch Ian McShane and Tim Roth in anything, so count me in for Kings and Lie to Me. I owe Joss Whedon for the beauty that was Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog, so I'll check out Dollhouse.

Melissa Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 06:13 PM EST

I've seen Castle and it was pretty good. I'd recommend everyone at least give it a shot.

Joseph Brownell Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 05:14 PM EST

How about Damages back on the air Jan. 7th. Glenn close is amazing!

Kaiulani Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 05:13 PM EST

Dollhouse, Kings, and Lie to Me sound really good. I also can't wait for Damages, Lost, Battlestar and Burn Notice to return.

CaseB Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 05:04 PM EST

I'm not looking forewards to any of those shows. They all sound boring.
Cupid was done once, no need to do it again. Lie To me is The Mentalist meet Criminal Minds. Why watch something that is like those shows? Better off watching The Mentalist and Criminal Minds instead and not just a pale copy. Castle IS Murder She Wrote all over again! And Dollhouse sound like Dullhouse.

ceegee Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 04:58 PM EST

Wow, they all sound like crap and eerily similar (some supernatural power?). We need more comedies (and I don't mean "reality). Can't wait for the next 30 Rock!

Izzy Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 03:51 PM EST

THE MIDDLE!!

There currently doing casting for it. Its like Malcolm and the middle and its super funny.

kim Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 03:16 PM EST

Cupid...they just cancelled a similar show on the CW. It didn't make it a decade ago. Are the gods trying to tell you something? I am looking forward to Life on Mars. None of the new shows listed sound good to me at this time.

Francesco Sinibaldi Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 03:15 PM EST

An intense light.

With fine
manners the
mask of a child
invites me to
cry, when the
moonlight
appears; I hear
a blackbird
near the sound
of a small lamp,
and everything
shines like
a terse sensibility.

bruno Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 03:09 PM EST

KINGS. hands down.
dear eliza dushku and nathan fillian,
you had your turn. you blew it. now go away.

dave Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 03:01 PM EST

LOST is back Jan 21st. That's pretty much good enough for me. But I may check out Dollhouse. Seems intriguing. But a little worried its scheduled on Fridays. Is Fox not confident with this show? I don't want to invest my time in a show if it's going to be canceled after a season or two (Pushing Daisies sigh).

Tony Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 02:51 PM EST

I guess the author hasn't heard about Toni Collette's "The United States Of Tara" on Showtime.

Laura K. Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 02:27 PM EST

TNT's new series, "Trust Me," with Eric McCormack and Tom Cavanaugh, looks to be good fun...I'll at least give it a try.

Elle Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 02:09 PM EST

1.United States Of Tara
2.Dollhouse
3.Cupid
4.Amy Poehler project
5.Melrose Place spinoff

Michael Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 02:08 PM EST

1 - Cupid
2 - Dollhouse
3 - Kings
4 - Who needs new shows, we've got Lost!

Tom Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 01:42 PM EST

1- Dollhouse (hands down)

2- Nurse Jackie (with Edie Falco)

3- Kings

4- Castle

5- United States of Tara

James T. Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 01:27 PM EST

The JAY LENO show (not!!!)

jaime Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 01:25 PM EST

Im really looking foward to United States of Tara!!! It looks very interesting and promising!

Snarf Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 12:26 PM EST

Dollhouse. Hands down.

Joe Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 12:19 PM EST

Aren't you TV guys (Mr. Tucker and your associates) ever going to mention two other upcoming shows that will undoubtedly be critical hit sensations? Showtime's 'Nurse Jackie' with Edie Falco and TNT's 'Trust Me' with the brilliant pairing of Tom Cavanagh and Eric McCormack.
Both shows foresee to be as smart and original as the five shows mentioned above.

AM Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 12:13 PM EST

I'm interested in Castle and Kings. Everything else pretty much sounds like variations to the cop/mystery shows that already fill our TV schedules. Don't get me wrong...I like these shows, but a little variety would be nice. I am also desperate for a new quality sitcom.

mike Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 11:30 AM EST

I'm also starved for new scripted series. But, I'll wait for ratings to come in. I've invested way too much interest in shows that were cancelled before their time, while they they still make new episodes of According to Jim!!

stacy e Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 11:30 AM EST

Oh wow thanks for letting me know about Castle. I had no idea Nathan Fillion had a new show coming out. I hope it fares better than Drive.

Kvivik Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 11:28 AM EST

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOO happy. Nathan is back on TV!!! Love him!!! And I pray it's not a 'Murder he wrote' show. That would just be annoying. Anything that puts Ian McShane on my TV screen is very welcome. The man is the best at playing good but sometimes evil, or truly evil characters. Drooling for Kings, I am. (and like Tucker, hoping that it is worthy of Ian's talent) Looking forward to Lie to Me too. Hopefully it'll not be as preachy as I found The Mentalist to be (loved the first few eps, then stopped watching). And OMG!!! Not 'Cupid' again. The Jeremy Piven show was good, just low rated...at least at first. If the second installment is as cartoony and ludicrous the show will have a quick death and this guy will maybe think about creating something else. :-)
I'm uncomfortable with the premise of Joss Whedon's new show, but would've been willing to watch it...until I read that Dushku was one of the principle actors. Couldn't stand her on Buffy, not watching her now.

Stacey Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 11:21 AM EST

I am looking forward to the Unusuals starring Amber Tamblyn. Sure it another police drama. But Amber was excellent in the short-lived Joan of Acadia. But of the ones you've listed. I am intrigued by Dollhouse and Kings. I heard Maculey Culkin will be an arc of episodes on Kings. Should be interesting. Don't know much about the show. But can't wait. Hopefully the shows will make it past a few episodes.

Jelana Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 11:17 AM EST

I won't watch any new shows on ABC, because as soon as you really get into them they get cancelled.

Carrie Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 10:50 AM EST

I've only just heard of Castle but, it's Fillion, so I'm there. And I've been waiting anxiously for Kings for months.

jen Sat, Jan 3, 2009 at 10:03 AM EST

i've been looking forward to Dollhouse for months, mostly because of Joss and Eliza. (i was one of the few people who watched tru calling) i think i'll check out Nathan in Castle too, that looks like it might be interesting.
