My New Year's TV Resolutions

Categories: Television

Happy new year. For 2009, I resolve to:

1. Get to the bottom of this ‘Supernatural’ business. So many of you, as I scan EW.com, are into this show, I have clearly been missing something. So I’m gonna watch a batch of this season’s already aired episodes, and you’ll explain to me why you dig Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles so much in this series, right?

2. Give Kathy Griffin another chance, based on her CNN co-hosting with Anderson Cooper. My colleague Mike Bruno provides a thoroughly entertaining summary (and a clip) of the gleeful chaos Griffin wreaked here. I, as you may recall from yesterday’s post, had promised not to watch CNN last night, but, flipping the channels, I was stopped dead upon hearing Griffin ask Cooper, “Can I get a pap smear from Dr. Sanjay Gupta?” and was hooked and hooting for about an hour. I used to think of Griffin as an unfunny vulgarian. Now I think she may be a very funny vulgarian: clearly, a Subject For Further Study.

3. Try and keep and open mind about Jimmy Fallon’s new talk show, premiering Mar. 2. On the one hand, the guy’s webisodes running up to his debut have been thuddingly unfunny. On the other hand, his house band is The Roots. Good taste, but not good humor? I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and watch closely for at least the first week.

What about you? What are your New Year’s TV Resolutions? Any shows you plan to watch that you’ve been avoiding? Any shows you resolve to quit watching?

SPN is a pretty decent show. And consistently gets higher ratings than Gossip Girl. Maybe EW should actually put SPN on the cover, too, eh?

Supernatural is the ONLY TV show I watch. Normally I only do movies because television isn’t worth sitting thru the commercials since about a decade & a half ago. However, thanks to one of my children, for the past 18 months I’ve been addicted to this show and need it like my next breath.
Clearly, you have been missing something. I look forward to your contrite admission and welcome your joining us in the ranks of the Supernaturally addicted.
I’ll let Dean and Sam and the rest of the amazing staff on the set show you the why’s. Just WATCH.

  • Laura K.

I resolve to stop watching ANTM. Of course, I resolve to stop watching ANTM at the end of every cycle, and as soon as the new cycle comes back on, there I am again.

  • mary

Supernatural is a great show for many reasons but mainly because it’s interesting and because Jensen is so hott!!!

  • Jessica

I resolve to finally finish all the Dirty Sexy Money and Pushing Daisies episodes on my DVR, since the shows have been canceled…see it through to the end, then let go. And I resolve to watch more Inside the Actors Studio, which is amazing but rarely mentioned.

  • Pam

Supernatural!…Jensen Ackles is the ONLY reason to watch this show. Granted Jared is easy on the eyes too. Jared’s the type of guy to take home to meet your parents. Jensen, well he’s just the type of guy you take home for yourself.

  • Sarah

Supernatural is a seriously under-rated show. The acting is fantastic and the writing is excellent. Thanks for finally giving the show a chance. You won’t be disappointed. I can honestly say its the only thing worth watching these days!

  • Em

We won’t have to tell you why we like the stars of Supernatural. You’ll get it yourself once you watch the show!
My resolution is to give 24 another chance. However, a four-hour premier night? Meh. Sure, they had the momentum for that sort of thing years ago, but that’s a LOT to ask of us at this point in our relationship.

  • Rock Salt

Supernatural rocks dude! It is the best show on TV…. Way way way better than Lost and Heroes etc.. Enjoy!!

  • Kathy B

I know a lot of people who have started watching Supernatural this year. Season 4 has been awesome.

  • Corinne

Well, I dig Jensen, Jared not so much.
I’ve got nothing against the guy, he just can’t act, and Sam is sucking assp this season (not that he was a ball of fun the prior seasons either).
Jensen/Dean? Is basically wow to me, and the reason I have to watch again and again. The stories can be pretty great too.

  • Corinne

And, I love Pam’s comments about Jensen lol.

  • LoA

Supernatural may not have the most viewers but they’re the MOST loyal and dedicated. It’s been a long slog but the word’s getting out there and the boys are here to stay. I think 75% of people who watch will say they do it for Jensen/Dean and I’m one of them but nevertheless it’s still the best show ever written!!! Yay!!

  • CandyMaize

Ken, I’m happy to hear you’re planning on giving ‘Supernatural’ a try. Just recently I happened to get a friend hooked, plus her husband AND her mother!
Jared & Jensen have such great chemistry, and are both really good actors. Yes, I admit it, they’re good-looking guys .. but really, what keeps me watching is the acting and the writing/storylines. (There’s no way I would still be watching the show, or own all 3 seasons of the show on DVD, if the only thing the show had going for it was “the pretty.”)

  • Yoga_Girl

The show stays original and scary, which is impressive given that much of the material comes from urban legends, and spooky wives tales. I think adding the angels this year was genius. While they certain have plenty of cute chicks come and go… thank heaven for the always handsome duo…who have a healthy sibling dynamic. The new angel Castiel continues their line of talented and attractive casting! Does any other show have such hot men, who can actually act? (I do agree they are woefully under-utilizing Sam this year). I think this show appeals evenly to both sexes…which shows rarely do.

  • Francesca

Congratulations for jumping into Supernatural this year.
It’s truly a wonderful experience to watch every week. The story and the characters the crew of Supernatural have created blows my mind.
Just watching one episode one can tell how much devotion the actors, writers, special-effects crew, make-up effects, camera, etc. just everyone has for this show.
Jensen and Jared breathe life into their characters and give it all.
I have gotten some people into Supernatural and they all have fallen in love with the story, characters, the cinematography, etc.
I hope you find out why we all love Jared and Jensen to pieces on your own when you watch some episodes. ~.o

  • Heather

I agree with the comments above. Unlike other shows with their pretties, these pretties can act. It’s scarily underrated. I just jumped on the fangirl wagon too. The storylines are consistently good in quality and the dialouge is witty. In addition, unlike other shows, their story arcs make sense and when they kill a charcter and bring them back to life, there IS a purpose. It has a sweeping mythology that makes sense and is easy to follow.
    There’s also some singing.

  • Alison

Supernatural has me watching each week because of the terrifc chemistry between Jared & Jensen and because I care about Sam & Dean as if they were living, breathing people. The writers and actors have brought these characters to life in such a way that it *matters* to me whether Sam & Dean defeat evil, that their bond remain intact and that they go down fighting. There isn’t another show out there that affects me this way.

  • Jools

The main leads are pretty easy on the eye, but there is so much more to this show, in fact the ‘Scary just got sexy’ adds we had in the UK actually preventd me watching when the series first came out. The relationship the Winchesters have is probably the best on tv anywhere. Whilst the writers don’t always get everything right all the time, they really do try to give us everything, drama that might have you on the edge of your seat, angst that might make you weep (although probably not you personally :P ), humour that might make you lol a huge well established myth arc and lots of stand alones for the casual viewers.
Cream will always rise to the top. SN has been stuck on CW in a terrible timeslot, no promotion whatsoever and it still out performs the CW’s darlings week on week. I hope you get it Mr Tucker and can show SN a little love now and again.

  • GreenWoman

It’s about friendship and family. Sam and Dean as brothers, their troubled relationship with their father, their strong bond with their surrogate father Bobby Singer…these bonds are the foundation for my interest in the series. The extended complex reationships between the core characters and the other recurring characters…this season, especially, with the angels, but also with their childhood associations and other characters such as the Trickster, are intriguing. And finally, the secret war which the two brothers fight for high stakes and mostly thanklessly, and the life they lead on the edge of the society they protect…those factors I find extremely intriguing and moving. For *me*, the attraction of the show is the relationships, the strong values and the way in which those values are tested, as are the inner strengths and weaknesses of the main characters. That’s what the center of the show is for me…and the center, so far, has and can hold.

  • jools

Some more stuff that I know the men in my life really like about the show – two brothers on a road trip in a kick ass car blasting bad guys. there also used to be some pretty bad ass music – but unfortunately SN’s budget doesn’t allow for much of that anymore CW seems to throw all their money into designer cloths for GG and advertising the hell out of that :(

  • Lila

You won’t be wasting your time getting to the bottom of this Supernatural business, Mr. Tucker. It’s not a “chick” show, contrary to what you may have heard. It’s pretty far from it. I’m a middle aged woman and I’m into it. Needless to say, I’m not interested in any other of the CW’s banal teen fare. Supernatural, however, is in a different league. Great idea for a show; Eric Kripke found lightning in a bottle with the casting of Padalecki and Ackles. You can’t manufacture chemistry like that or fake such heartfelt emotional depth. From a technical standpoint, Mad Men and Dexter are better shows, but Supernatural’s emotional depth, humor, and character interaction is second to none. It’s the best thing going on network television. It really is.

  • rocksnroses

I am very happy you’ll give Supernatural a chance. I, too am a middle aged woman enthralled by the storylines and dynamic between the TWO stars. Jensen is awesome, but Jared consistently knocks it out of the park. And as far as looks? Tall, dark and handsome Jared. It’s sad some people have to bash him.

  • lila

Rocksnroses, I have been *very* impressed with Jared’s growth as an actor from season one through season four. His improvement has been phenomenal. He doesn’t receive enough credit for his work and yes, he’s strikingly handsome. He isn’t “cute” like the teen idols from Gossip Girl. I prefer leads who look and act like men as opposed to boys. Supernatural delivers.

  • Mindy

Well Ken, I truly applaud your first resolution. Supernatural is my absolute favorite show period. It’s seriously one of the best shows on television. Not only is Supernatural consistently cleverly well written (something I can’t say as far as Heroes is concerned) but Jared & Jensen are phenomenal actors. Their tv relationship as brothers is incredibly believable because of the excellent chemistry between the two of them & is the heart & soul of the show. Plus a lot of the mythology & folklore is very fascinating & engaging!

  • cassi

Thanks for giving Supernatural a chance! I don’t think 1000 characters are enough to describe why Supernatural is so awesome. For me, it’s a great mix of drama, comedy, gore, family and the coolest car ever – the Impala. If you really want to give Supernatural a chance, at least try watching the Pilot, Devil’s trap, In my time of dying, Born under a bad sign, All hells breaks loose, Mystery Spot, A very Supernatural Christmas, No rest for the wicked and Lazarus rising! Sure Jensen and Jared don’t look bad but it’s the relationship of the brothers which keeps Supernatural alive, everything else is nice and entertaining but not necessary!
I will give Dollhouse and Dexter a chance!
PS: Only two weeks until thursday is awesome again!!!!!

  • Charstin

Supernatural is my #1 must-see show every week. If I could only watch one show per week, it would be Supernatural. (there are lots of other shows that I really enjoy … but I would give them all up if I had to make a choice).
For me, part of the hook of the show is the “journey” that the brothers are on .. and I don’t mean the part where they’re driving cross-country in the Impala .. I really mean in the overall sense of everything we’ve seen in the these last 4 years (plus the flashbacks to their youth, their parents etc) and to whereever the brothers will ultimately “end up.” I am truly along for the ride. And, although I realize the show’s “supernatural” premise is not reality .. Sam and Dean always seem VERY real (as if they’re people, not “just” characters).
And I feel the need to mention that over the years the show has also cast (more often than not) truly wonderful actors/actresses in guest and recurring roles.

  • Brad

I remember an episode last year where wishes were being granted and the two of them open a door into a room where, believe it or not, a giant teddy bear was crying his eyes out. The two of them were speechless. A, the scene reminded me of Ghostbusters and B, the show showed that they could not only be scary, it could also provide thought out humor. The show is a great alternative to the overrated and failing Grey’s Anatony. Izzie having sex with a ghost? Please.

  • Fallon

I’m excited that you’re going to try to get into Supernatural!! It’s probably the most underrated show on television, I kid you not. While the jaw-dropping good looks of Padalecki and Ackles are an added bonus, I watch the show for the heart-wrenching dynamic between the two brothers, and the relationships they have with other recurring characters, such as the stand-in father figure of Bobby. The writing is clever and well thought out, the themes prevalent and question-raising, morally challenging, religiously philosophical and mature. I love this show because it has substance, heart, and the chemistry alone between Jensen and Jared is outstanding – both are phenomenally talented and really bring to lief these characters Sam and Dean Winchester to whom I’ve become hopelessly attached.
And whoever said Jared couldn’t act – Born Under a Bad Sign. If you can watch that episode and dismiss his talent, then I fear for your sanity, my friend.

  • Fallon

And my New Year’s Resolution is to get into Chuck and The Wire, which my parents wouldn’t let me get into when it originally aired (I was too young) and by the time I could watch I just couldn’t catch up – but it’s about my city and my town and what goes on here and I’ve heard how mind-blowing the writing is, and so I really want to watch it for myself and be astounded.
